Afraid that Honduras will emulate Nicaragua? U.S. officials claim to be prepared to increase economic aid to Honduras

On December 10, China and Nicaragua officially resumed diplomatic relations. There are only 14 "friendly countries" left in Taiwan, and Honduras has once again become the focus of public opinion. According to Reuters reported on the 11th, an official of the US government revealed on the 10th local time that the United States is not sure whether Honduras will follow Nicaragua's example of establishing diplomatic relations with Chinese mainland, but he declared that Washington is ready to increase economic assistance to the upcoming Castro government of Honduras.

Reuters said the official said the U.S. engagement with the Castro government's transition team was "very positive." The United States is also willing to provide more financial support in Castro's priority areas to show that the United States is more favorable to Honduras than China.

"I think we can increase our resources there, including development resources," the U.S. official declared, adding that U.S. allies, including Japan and South Korea, could also help honduras's private economy grow.

In late November, Honduran left-wing leader Theomara Castro announced that she had won the election and would become the country's first female president. Previously, Castro said in her candidacy that if elected, she would terminate Honduras' "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan and turn to recognizing one China. In the face of this statement, the United States began to intervene and obstruct. Ahead of the election results, on November 21-23, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Nichols began leading a delegation to Honduras.

Reuters also quoted the U.S. government official as saying Nicaragua's diplomatic shift was due to "the need for Chinese support," saying that nicaragua's current president, Ortega, who won the election in November, had previously suffered targeted U.S. sanctions and that turning to China was "a response to pressure from the international community." The official also did not forget to emphasize that Nicaragua's transformation is only a "concrete" case, and the United States does not believe that there will be other such actions in the Western Hemisphere.

At a regular press conference on the 10th, Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nepal is a political decision, not a trading chip. The resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nepal is based on Nicaragua's recognition of the one-China principle, and the Chinese side highly appreciates the position of the Nepalese side.
