Founded in 2015, the Shanghai Small Theater Xiqu Festival has gradually developed into one of the incubation bases for young opera creation and performance talents, cultivating a large number of young audiences. According to statistics, this year, 96 opera troupes, art colleges, non-governmental organizations, and individuals from 20 provinces and cities across the country have received 96 performances, including 73 original works and 39 premieres, 11 plays declared by colleges and universities, more than 40 declared plays, and nearly 20 of them appear on the declaration list for the first time, such as Han opera, Pu opera, Shangdang Luozi, Yao opera, Chao opera, Qingyang opera, qu opera, Gan opera, Mao opera, bowl cavity, Tang opera, Linxian Daoqing, Chuanbei lantern opera, Lü opera, Sizhou opera, and Tui opera. There are also more than a dozen creators who have won the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award, wenhua Award and Magnolia Award, which shows the dock and source effect of the national opera talents competing with masterpieces.
The "2021 China Small Theater Opera Exhibition" is not only richer in drama, more diversified in themes, and more innovative in repertoire. More than 10 small theater opera works from 11 genres, including Peking Opera, Kun Opera, Huai Opera, Sichuan Opera, Dian Opera, Pu Opera, Han Opera, Cantonese Opera, Huangmei Opera, Yu Opera, Liyuan Opera, etc., will take turns to appear in the Red and Black Boxes of the Yangtze River Theater and the Small Theater of Wanping Theater.
Among them, Pu opera will make its debut in the small theater opera exhibition. Pu opera is one of the ancient zizi operas in China, and for the first time in this small theater exhibition, the ancient Greek tragedy was integrated into it, creating a refreshing "Oedipus King".
In addition, the Peking Opera "The Death of a Little Official" adopts the form of a one-legged play, in which one person plays multiple roles, portrays the characters in a comedic way, and interprets classic literary masterpieces. The Peking Opera "A Temple of Gold" breaks the "fourth wall" and praises the Chinese virtues of honesty and honesty, light profit and heavy righteousness in a humorous and humorous style. With the theme of "redemption", Kunqu opera "Bai Luo Shirt" profoundly explores human nature and human feelings, and has both the essence of traditional culture and the spirit of experimental exploration. The Huai opera "Xiucai And Wife Judgement" uses sharp brushstrokes to call out the true feelings of the world. The Cantonese opera "Golden Lotus" analyzes the hearts of tragic characters from a unique perspective. These repertoire are all high-quality opera works newly created or adapted in recent years, with various highlights, different styles, and full of upward and benevolent spiritual strength. Some plays also have a phenomenon that it is difficult to find a ticket, reflecting the high attention paid by the industry and the audience to the innovation and exploration of opera.
This year is the seventh year of the "Shanghai Small Theater Opera Festival" and the third year that the "Little Theater Festival" has been upgraded to a "national brand". After the performance, a symposium will be held, and experts and scholars will discuss the current situation and development potential of small theater opera with the main creators of the theater group. At the same time, the "Xiqu Baby" WeChat emoji produced by Shanghai Xiqu Art Center was also launched, making the way of xiqu dissemination and expression more vivid and three-dimensional.
