Surfer's House, a restrained, low-key wooden house

Like a hidden gem in Santa Cruz, Surf House has a bohemian feel to it, with one of the best surfing breaks in the state on its side. In such a low-key neighbourhood, aware of the feel and scale of the surrounding architectural structure, our client approached Feldman Architects to design a restrained and eclectic family home. Clients are intimately familiar with the nuances of the venue and dream of a home that is naturally and sustainable, adaptable to the beach and this low-key venue.

In accordance with the 100-year geological restoration requirements and the california coastal commission's relevant normative requirements, a site solution that respects sensitive coasts and communities became the design focus. The residence's location is a windbreak, with a backyard and terrace deck to take full advantage of the sea views, while the entrance and front yard, tucked behind two separate structures (a custom surfboard storage room and garage), sit in the sunniest spot in winter, with the front yard acting like a warm, well-lit cloister, keeping the building protected from coastal winds all year round.

Feldman Construction then enlisted the help of Arborica's Evan Shivley, a sawmill that recycles and reuses california-grown wood to supply locally sourced indoor and outdoor cladding panels for the project. The Monterrey cypress is a sturdy, resilient, noble wood that adapts to the California coastal climate of the site, weathering into a complex gray when not fully formed; as a result, this wood also quickly became the focus of residential design. The exterior is covered with plates and slats that establish an exterior and interior material match throughout the home. Waste in the wood processing process and trunk use is minimized by fully integrating each grade of wood and its respective quantities into the design.

Utilizing indoor/outdoor connectivity, surf house's communal spaces seamlessly transition from an intimate front yard to a large warm open room and kitchen, and finally to a backyard overlooking the sea. Large floor to ceiling windows and doors open to connect the living space with a spacious backyard terrace deck with an underground hot tub and outdoor kitchen, perfect for entertaining visiting family and friends.

Upstairs, as the residence transitioned from public to private, interior materials were incorporated into plasterboard by Monterey Cyprus, diversifying the tones and drawing attention to the elaborate architectural details. Thoughtfully laid out windows weave stunning blues and greens in earthy tones. The master bedroom features floor to ceiling glass walls facing the sea and opens out to a private balcony with views of surfers in the waves below.

The interior design of Surf House, designed by Commune Design and landscaped by Ground Studio, strikes the perfect balance between high-end design and California casual aesthetics, like creating magic on an already magical venue.
