In fact, since Hemingway and Faulkner, there has been no more american writers in the camp than these two achievements, but on the contrary, with a typical personal style as the new front, McCullers belongs to it.

The heart is a lonely hunter:

Although she had stayed outside late the night before, Miko was awakened by the sun early in the morning. It was hot and she didn't want to drink coffee for breakfast, so she mixed a glass of ice water with syrup and ate some cold cookies. She fiddled around in the kitchen for a moment, then walked to the front porch and read a comic book. She had thought that perhaps Mr. Singh would read the newspaper on the porch, which he would do basically every Sunday morning. However, Mr. Singh did not show up, and after a while his father said that Mr. Singh had returned particularly late the night before and had brought a friend with him.

Miko waited a long time. After all the tenants except Mr. Singer had gone downstairs, she returned to the kitchen, picked up her brother Ralph from the stool, changed him into clean clothes, and wiped his face. When another younger brother, Barber, returned from Sunday school, she was ready to take the children out. Michael let Barber into Ralph's trolley because he was barefoot and the hot pavement burned his feet. She pushed the cart about eight blocks to a large, new house under construction. The ladder was still leaning against the edge of the roof, and she plucked up her courage and began to climb up.

"You look at Ralph," she shouted back at Barber, "don't let the stinging worm bite his eyelids. ”

After five minutes, Miko stabilized himself and stood up straight. She spread her arms like wings. Everyone wants to be able to stand in this place. But not every child can do it. Most people are afraid, because once they can't catch it firmly, from the eaves

If you fall, you will die. It is surrounded by rooftops and turquoise tree tops. On the other side of the town stands the spires of churches and the chimneys of factories. The sky was blue, and the sun was like fire. Under the sunlight, everything on the ground turned into a dazzling white or black.

She wanted to sing. All the songs she would have sung came to her throat, but she didn't make a sound. Last week, a big boy who climbed up to the roof shouted and then shouted a speech he had learned in high school: "Friends, Romans, compatriots, listen to me!" Ascending to the heights will always make people have a wild heart, making people want to scream, want to sing, want to turn their arms into wings, spread their wings and fly high. ”

Miko felt the soles of her tennis shoes slid under her feet, and she calmed down and straddled the roof. The house is almost complete. It would be one of the nearby buildings with two floors, high ceilings, and a roof steep inside the house she had ever seen. But it will soon be fully completed. The craftsmen will leave, and when the time comes, the children will have to find a new playground.

There was no one else but herself, silent; she could meditate for a moment. She took the pack of cigarettes she had bought the night before from her shorts pocket and took a slow sip. The cigarette made her feel drunk, and the head on her shoulder became heavy and confused, but she had to finish it.

M.K. Will be very famous when she is seventeen, and then there will be these two letters everywhere. She would come home in a red-and-white Packard car with the two initials written on the door. She would write M.K. on her handkerchief and panties with a red pen. Maybe she'll be a great inventor; she'll invent a tiny radio the size of a green bean so people can put it in their ears and carry it with them. She will also invent a flying machine that can be tied to her back like a backpack, and on her back she can travel the world. After that, she will become the one who builds tunnels across the earth and directly to China; people can land in large hot air balloons. These were the things she would invent first. She had planned them all. Half-smoked cigarettes can be snuffed out and the cigarette butts can be bounced off the roof. Then lean forward, rest your head on your arms, and start humming to yourself.
