DP visual arts teacher Casper Whiteman introduces us to the use of the artistic technique of "repetition" in our works:

As one of the foundations of creativity, repetition helps to create a sense of movement in the artwork. It is a reproduction of a specific line, pattern, shape, or other visual element.

Sometimes repetition is about creating a sense of tension without change, and the key to understanding these works is often the subtle details. The use of repetitive patterns enhances the tension on the surface of the work, making the audience more attractive, and at the same time, adding a sense of order to the composition.

Before they began to create, students also learned how "repetition" can be a wonderful tool for artists to convey their thoughts and emotions through the works of artists such as Andy Warhol, Tara Donovan, Willie Cole, and Yayoi Kusama.

"The repetitive elements in art are used to comment on the state of the world around us and challenge the public to slow down the pursuit of consumerism." Mr. Whiteman says, "As a tool, repetition in art not only helps to construct the visual part of the work, but often provides a deeper meaning to the artwork, hiding more philosophical and conceptual meanings."

Just as Kusama Loves Dots, It's because in her eyes, there are endless dots in the universe.

In the students' works, there is not only the emphasis on the process and technique of artistic creation, but also the emphasis on "concept" - "what does an object represent, and when repetitive elements are applied, does the meaning of the object change?" ”

Around the artistic element of "repetition", the students created unique works with different themes, expressing the young scholars' thinking on issues such as religion, air pollution, feminism, animal trade, and social rights struggles.

The Black and The Red

Creator: G11 Wang Jiaxi

The work, titled "The Red and the Black," consists of multiple black fists and a large red fist, inspired by Stendhal's novel of the same name.

Deeply influenced by the novel, Wang Jiaxi uses his fist wrapped in red and black paint to explore issues such as rebellion and reason, individualism and collectivism. The contrasting colors of red and black convey a dramatic sense of conflict and power.

The severed middle finger, which Wang Jiaxi calls "unintentional beauty," stems from a small accident when the plaster is removed from the mold. Wang Jiaxi "will be wrong" and put a "Gaiggis Ring" on the broken finger to explore the issues of reason and morality in more depth.

Untitled

Creator: G11 Wu Xinjie

Multiple shells made of plaster, glued to a female body model. Wu Xinjie uses this work to explore "women's empowerment".

She said that shells often represent femininity in culture and art, symbolizing birth, good luck and resurrection. Today, these shells seem to be adorned on women's armor, like a kind of guard, protecting women from patriarchal and stereotyped expectations.

The whole work is uniform in color, and the shell is like skin, becoming a naturally growing part of the body. And the height of its placement also has a certain ingenuity, which adds a sense of dignity and strength to the work.

Birds of Paradise

Creator: G11 Wang Fei

In Her work, Fei Wang focuses on the impact of the environment and air pollution on birds.

She used 20 white plaster bird models. Their wings spread out and stagger, simulating the flight of birds in the air. The charcoal particles and smoke rendering on them represent the harm caused to animals by problems such as air pollution.

Wang Fei hopes that through this display, we will call on society to pay attention to environmental issues and strengthen animal protection.

Mahakala

Creator: G11 Zhang Kexin

It is a work with a religious theme inspired by thangkas. It consists of several blue maha gala plaster statues and a larger red Maha Gala plaster statue with a blanket of red moss on the background. The mold on the plaster statue echoes the artificial moss and symbolizes the Buddhist concept of "time".

In the work, Zhang Kexin tries to use exaggerated thangka elements to reflect the creativity and inheritance of religious art, hoping that the audience can feel through the work: the influence of Buddhism will not disappear with time, and the unique artistic style of thangka will become more and more ancient and profound with time.

Feathered Captives

Creator: G11 Yang Yuxuan

The main body of the work is a black, bird-shaped wire cage with about 70 parrots made of plaster, densely packed in cages. Above the birdcage, there is also a row of parrots hanging, which from a distance seem to be flying, but their wings are closed, losing their freedom, and flying is only an imagination of the viewer.

Yang Yuxuan chose the tiger parrot as his subject because they are so common, birds that have been in captivity since the 19th century, and their health is worrying.

In addition to the tension created by "repetition", her deep concern for animal rights is also reflected in her use of color. The sharp contrast between black and bright yellow, similar to the color match of the warning sign, creates a warning effect. The change in color saturation also hints at the animals' desperation — even after escaping from their cages, they are still lifeless.

Tara Donovan once said that his work is not to imitate nature, but to imitate the way nature exists and grows.

In fact, all works of art are an observation and commentary on the world.

In the works of these returnee 11th grade students, the "external form" and "inner meaning" of art are brilliantly demonstrated.

As Mr. As Whiteman put it:

"I can't be less proud of the students' deep understanding of the importance of concept and craftsmanship. I'm looking forward to what these talented students will do next. ”

This "next work" is probably next year's DP Visual Arts Exhibition.

Mr. Whiteman also praised the students by giving us an overview of the much-anticipated exhibition.

G11 visual arts students show great energy and resilience in the "Repetition" unit. The first unit is essential for the conceptual development of students' artistic practice and lays the foundation for the creation of cohesive and technically high-calibre works in the final year of the IB DP exhibition, when students will carefully curate and present their best works to the entire community in a fun and engaging way. Works will be evaluated based on four specific criteria: planning and conception, conceptual competence, creation and exploration, and artistic skill.

In addition to the artworks, students will complete a "process portfolio" that documents everyone's growth as an artist. Students will select materials to document their artistic practice and development process. The Process Portfolio showcases students' participation in artistic practice, critical practice, and conceptual practice, and will be evaluated on the criteria for skills, techniques and processes, investigation, communication, review, refinement, reflection, presentation, and language-specific application.

Each work will be accompanied by an artist statement in which students will explain their creative process, including motivations, inspirations, goals and methods, as well as the choice of medium and the use of tools and techniques.

Today, several young artists are slowly growing up after returnees, and let us wait for the flowers to blossom with expectations.

Samet has always focused on the future of education. We hope to use the aesthetic warp and weft to weave each school uniform, so that the school uniform can carry and tell the cultural concept of the school, and become a three-dimensional expression of future education.
