On November 9, Haiyang City, Yantai, Shandong Province, officially launched the nuclear energy heating model to ensure that 200,000 people use winter heating, with a heating area of 4.5 million square meters. From coal-fired heating to nuclear heating, Haiyang became the country's first "zero-carbon" heating city.

In the past, coal-fired heating was the main heating method in the winter in northern China, but in recent years, as the amount of coal burning continues to rise, the emission of atmospheric pollutants has increased, causing serious damage to air quality. Since 2017, China has vigorously promoted clean heating in the northern region, and nuclear energy, as a safe and clean energy source, is currently the most economical and safest way to heat up smokeless dust, ash residue and nitrogen oxide emissions.

Different from coal-fired heating, the principle of nuclear energy heating is to extract steam from the second circuit of the nuclear power unit as a heat source, carry out multi-channel isolation and multi-stage heat exchange through the heat exchange station, and finally transfer the heat to the user through the municipal heating pipe network. In this process, only the transfer of heat, no exchange of other media such as water, to ensure that the user heating clean and safe.

After the project was put into operation, the nuclear power unit officially replaced the local 12 coal-fired boilers, compared with previous years, it is expected to save 100,000 tons of raw coal, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 180,000 tons, smoke and dust by 691 tons, nitrogen oxides 1,123 tons, sulfur dioxide 1,188 tons, equivalent to planting 1,000 hectares of broad-leaved forests, and reduce heat emissions to the environment by 1.3 million gigajoules.
