The event released 50 new species of animals and plants found in Guangdong from 2019 to 2021, including 20 animals and 30 plants. Li Yide of the Institute of Tropical Forestry of the Chinese Academy of Forestry analyzed that among the newly discovered species, species such as Chebaling Yue and Tianma of Qingyun Mountain have extremely high requirements for the ecological environment, and the discovery of the above species shows that the natural environment in Guangdong is improving year by year, and the construction of the natural protected area system is effective.
Most of the areas around the Tropic of Cancer are deserts, but due to the control of the monsoon climate, our province has bred vast forests and become a rare oasis in the desert belt. Relying on this oasis, Guangdong has established 1,362 nature reserves with a total area of more than 2.9 million hectares, accounting for more than 16% of the province's area. At present, Guangdong has basically formed a network system of natural protected areas with national nature reserves as the core, provincial nature reserves as the backbone, and city and county level nature reserves as supplements, effectively protecting Guangdong's typical natural ecosystems and biodiversity.
Therefore, the "Crossing the Tropic of Cancer" aims to allow more members of the public to enter this mysterious and unique landscape and jointly promote the healthy and sustainable development of nature conservation. In 2021, the event won the first place in the national category of the 10th Liang Xi Science Popularization Award. Wu Zhihong, director of the Management Bureau of the Reserve, introduced that in the past 40 years, the forest coverage rate of the reserve has increased from 65% to 96%, and it has successively won more than 20 honorary titles such as members of the China Biosphere Reserve Network.
The event also released the Guangdong Nature Reserve Public Service Platform. The platform will be visitor reservations, science popularization activities reservations, science guidance, electronic fences and scientific research team reservations and other public service matters into the provincial government service platform and "Guangdong Province" Mini Program. At present, the platform has settled in 71 nature reserves, entered 91 kinds of popular science courses, and the cumulative number of real-name certifications has exceeded 20,000.
