Light up your scientific dreams encourage your commitment to science
Xu Xuemin gave a brief introduction to Academician Zhang Jie and his award-winning research. She expressed the hope that through the special academic lecture, the students' enthusiasm for science will be further ignited, and the ideal of firmly devoting themselves to scientific research will become the backbone of China's scientific and technological progress and social development in the future.
Zhang Xike said in his speech that the original intention of the establishment of the Future Science Award is to create a good atmosphere of respecting science and respecting scientists in the whole society, so that the general public can feel the charm of science and scientists, so that more people, especially the younger generation, can have and strive to realize their scientific dreams. Since its inception in 2016, the Future Forum has produced more than 20 winners based on global peer-reviewed scientific research as the sole measure.
Yang Zhenbin pointed out in his speech that the process of Academician Zhang Jie and his team in the past few decades of intensive research and wisdom collection has embodied the patriotic spirit, innovative spirit, realistic spirit and dedication spirit of scientists in the new era. With the joint efforts of successive leaders including Academician Zhang Jie and the teachers and students of the whole school, the school has created a rich academic atmosphere of turning around and meeting the masters, hoping that through an academic feast, the students will continue to absorb knowledge and nutrition, cultivate superb skills, strengthen ideals and beliefs, and grow into future scientific people.
Illuminate the future with lasers and change the world with science
Academician Zhang Jie made a keynote speech on "Material World and Ultra-High Space-Time Resolution Observation under Extreme Conditions". He reviewed the scientific progress of his team over the past two decades from four aspects: ultra-strong laser technology development, high-energy particle acceleration, ultrafast electron diffraction, and laser nuclear fusion. By comparing the extreme material state formed by the strong laser drive with the physical parameters in daily life and cosmic celestial bodies, the audience enjoyed the feast of the magical field of superfast laser physics. The report specifically pointed out that in the case of a very serious epidemic situation in early 2020 and the inability to move personnel, the team researchers took preventive measures, overcame many difficulties to debug experimental equipment, collect experimental data, and completed the verification of key decomposition experiments in the new laser fusion scheme in two years.
Qian Liejia made a keynote report on "high-quality innovative development super strong ultra-short laser". He analyzed the two quality problems faced by the current ultra-short and ultra-strong laser pulses, that is, the contrast of the strong laser is not enough and the amplification ability is insufficient, and introduced the team's achievements in measuring ultra-high contrast pulses in real time in a single shot, filtering noise, and cracking the amplification ability of chirp pulses. He said with full confidence that contemporary Chinese scientists have the responsibility to leave Chinese footprints in the history of super laser development.
The guide gave a keynote report on "Ultrafast Microscopic Detection Based on Relativistic Electron Beams", proposing that human understanding of the natural world requires continuously expanding the temporal and spatial resolution of observation methods. He introduced that since 2014, with the support of major instrument projects of the National Foundation of China, the team has used independent innovation technology to increase the time resolution of the ultrafast electronic diffraction device of Shanghai Jiao Tong University to 50fs from scratch, which has greatly broken the previous world record. The team also used this new tool to undertake innovative work to understand the melting of materials at the atomic level, shoot single-molecule movies, and laser-modulate the electromagnetic properties of quantum materials.
In the subsequent discussion session, the three speakers, Wang Nanlin and Zheng Jian discussed the history and development of inertial constraint fusion, the importance of fusion energy as a clean energy source, the application and prospect of ultra-short ultra-strong laser and high spatio-temporal resolution electron diffraction system, and answered a number of questions raised by the students.
Professor Zheng Jian said: "The concept of double-conical ignition officially published by Academician Zhang in 2020 provides a new idea for the early realization of laser fusion technology in China, and it is a very promising idea, which is not only the contribution of Academician Zhang's own team, in a sense, the contribution of our Chinese academic community to this technology." At the same time, in order to achieve the 'double carbon target', fusion, as an important candidate for clean energy, cannot be absent. With many outstanding scientists leading us, we must have confidence and determination in this, and we hope that more outstanding young scholars can join the team of achieving great goals. ”
Professor Wang Nanlin said in the dialogue: "Mr. Zhang Jie is not only an idol of students, but also an idol of our peers, who has made pioneering outstanding scientific achievements in ultra-short and ultra-strong lasers, including material interactions. At present, whether it is under the stimulation of ultra-short and super-strong laser, the change of the state of matter, the induction of new phenomena, etc., it is still at the forefront of scientific exploration, and it is also a frontier field of condensed matter physics development that has attracted attention, and there are still many unknowns waiting for human beings to discover in the future. ”
Wu Hong, initiator and secretary general of the Future Forum, congratulated Academician Zhang Jie on winning the 2021 Future Science Award - Material Science Award at the event, and said: "This generation of scientists are making unremitting efforts to realize the Chinese scientific dream, and I believe that their spirit of exploring the unknown and pursuing truth will also affect an era and affect a large number of young people with scientific ideals." At the same time, it is also hoped that young students will regard scientists as role models and contribute their own strength in the future development of science. ”
