4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9... What do you think when you see this string of numbers? Elementary School Math? Or a logical reasoning question when applying for a job?

You would never have imagined that they are a modern dance with different styles, and they are also the original dances belonging to the modern dance company, the Tao Body Theater.

In 2008, Tao Ye, Duan Ni and Wang Hao founded a full-time modern dance troupe in Beijing, which was the original Tao Body Theater. Since its establishment more than a decade ago, the Tao Body Theater has swept more than 40 countries and more than 100 different art festivals around the world.

Tao's body not only subverted the definition of modern dance in Chinese, but also subverted the perception of Chinese dance in Western society. Tao Ye once said in an interview that dance is a particularly good channel for him, allowing him to understand the world. It is a process of speculation, questioning, and responding.

Prior to this, Tao Body Theater has been invited to land on SAIC Shanghai Culture Square many times and staged a digital series of works "4", "5", "6", "7", "8", "9" and "10", showing the simple and clear, but boundless stage art charm.

From November 19th to 20th, Tao Will return to the stage of the main theater of Cultural Square with the 11th digital work "11". Through a new perspective, explore the beauty of the body and the meaning of life with the audience, leaving everyone with unlimited imagination space.

In the works of the Tao Body Theater, there are often all kinds of ups and downs, rational simplicity, and even life cycles... It all comes from the original circular motion system of the Tao Body Theater.

Inspired by Oriental thought, Combined with his personal dance style, Tao Ye developed the first circular movement system, and created the "digital series" works "Heavy 3", "2", "4", "5", "6", "7", "8", "9", "12", "10", "11" - these numbers are different from the number arrangement order in common sense, they are born to show the subtle connection and mutual projection between the digital form and the body movement.

Because the imagination space given to the audience by a body theater work is difficult to summarize with a name or a group of words. The clear interpretation will give the audience a preconceived impression, thus limiting the direction of the work's understanding before watching the performance.

Therefore, Tao Ye deliberately deleted many emotional elements that may trigger the audience to react, so that the vitality of the work can be developed and continued more meta-nature. Lin Huaimin, founder of The Cloud Gate Dance Collection in Taiwan, once commented: "Tao Ye's works are the dances of the 21st century, which are amazing and thought-provoking. I dreamed of making such a dance and knowing I couldn't do it. ”

"11", which will land on SAIC Shanghai Culture Square, is the 11th digital work of choreography and the longest, about 60 minutes.

In the way the pottery body moves, more than 30 minutes is a great challenge. This time, choreography will try to push this limit through paragraph advancement and improvisational introduction.

The idea of "11" is like the symmetry of characters, the two 1s are independent of each other, but they are independent of each other, both dualistic, and left and right, looking at each other. In all things, reason and sensibility flow with each other.

In this work, the dancers are set with a rule that is both restrictive and open: the lower body is limited, and the upper body is improvised. They will travel left and right in separate paths.

The direction and pace of the lower body, and even the space where the hips rotate and the direction of the knees, are carefully choreographed; and the upper body, from the extension of the spine, to the shoulders, elbows, wrists, and head, the dancers can dance randomly according to their truest feelings at each moment.

In today's world full of many restrictions, the work "11" attempts to interpret a different kind of freedom under a limited order, which has special practical significance.

Tao Ye said that in this city, many people are willing to go into the theater to understand the theater art, and to participate in the scene in a particularly active and positive state, "which makes us especially happy every time we come to Shanghai." ”
