Was Emperor Zhen of Liao really just trying to enforce Han law?

author:History in the Mirror

In the first episode of Yuntai, it is told that in order to declare his determination to promote Han law, Emperor Shizong of Liao, in order to declare his determination to promote Han law, made the Southerner Zhen an empress and took her to sacrifice her ancestors, so she was counterattacked by the conservative faction, and the husband and wife were assassinated and killed.

So, in history, was Emperor Liaozong really because of the implementation of Han law? In fact, it is not so much that Sejong lied up Empress Zhen because of admiration for Sinicization, but rather that he was to resist the forces of the Hou clan, of course, there is also part for true love!

Whether it is from the "History of Liao" or the "Chronicle of the Khitan Kingdom", Sejong first married Zhen, and then married Jingzong's mother Xiao Sage. Zhen was a Han woman, probably between 936 and 946 came to Sejong's side, at least before 947, they were together, Zhen was 41 years old at the time, although she was three unknown personnel, but because of her good temperament, "strict and dignified", "wind god leisurely", very popular with Sejong.

Was Emperor Zhen of Liao really just trying to enforce Han law?

In February of the first year of Datong (948), Sejong was made the King of Yongkang by his uncle Taizong, and in April, Taizong collapsed at Luancheng, and while the people were in a state of panic, Sejong was proclaimed emperor by the generals in the army.

The biggest reason why Sejong was able to be proclaimed emperor was due to the strength of his grandmother Shu Luping, who loved his young son Li Hu, and Li Hu was a cruel person who could not bear the king, and after the death of Taizu Abaoji, Shu Luping abandoned his eldest son, Prince Yelü Bei, and supported the second elder Deguang to succeed to the throne, just so that the second elder passed the throne to the third elder.

Emperor Taizong, who had been held hostage by the old woman all his life, actually always wanted to break free of the old woman's shackles, so he tried every means to march south to establish his exploits, although he was forced to appoint the third brother as the heir, but Emperor Taizong's cronies knew that Emperor Taizong was not willing to let the third brother succeed to the throne. Therefore, after Emperor Taizong's death, Sejong quickly seized the opportunity and was supported by the generals in the army, and after becoming emperor, he made Zhen empress.

Sejong established Empress Zhen without a family background, first, because of the love between the two, second, because Sejong himself identified with Han culture, and third, because of the fact that Zhen became a means of resisting the forces of the later clan.

Of course, Shu Luping was not happy with such a result, and the grandsons confronted each other and held each other for several days, and finally under the mediation of Yelü Wu, they had to take a step back, Shu Luping no longer opposed his grandson Sejong's succession, and Sejong also wanted to marry his grandmother's niece Xiao Sagar.

If Sejong and Empress Zhen were true love, then the marriage between Sejong and his cousin Xiao Sage was a political marriage of Chiguoguo, and Xiao Sage could only be subordinate to Empress Zhen even if she was a noble daughter of the hou clan.

In July of the second year of Tianlu (949), Xiao Sagar gave birth to only a son, Yelü Xian, that is, Jingzong. At this time, Sejong's throne was not sitting steadily, although he moved his grandmother and third uncle to Zuzhou to take care of him, but after all, he was not in the right position, first, he was not the heir designated by Emperor Taizong, and the other was not elected to the throne through the old system, so the rebellion of the royal family relatives was frequent.

In the first month of the second year of Tianlu (948), Emperor Taizong's son Tiande and his descendants Xiao Han, as well as Emperor Liu and Pengdu, rebelled and were suppressed by Emperor Sejong. Tiande was killed, Brother Liu was exiled, and Xiao Han was released with a staff.

In the first month of the third year of Tianlu (949), Xiao Han and the princess Abori contacted the Ming king An Duan to rebel, and the letter was intercepted by Yelü Wu, and Sejong ordered Xiao Han to be executed, and Abori was imprisoned, and Berduan was belittled.

It was also this incident that gave Sejong the illusion that he had already controlled the overall situation, so in September of that year, in order to gain the support of the Hou clan, in the fourth year of Tianlu (950), Xiao Sagar was established only as an empress, and he stood side by side with Empress Zhen.

On the fourth day of the first month of September in the fifth year of Tianlu (951), Sejong marched south and was assassinated by the Fire God Dian Rebellion, Empress Zhen and him died at the same time, and the couple also died together, and at the same time, Sejong's biological mother, Empress Xiao of Rouzhen, was also killed.

The other empress, Xiao Sage, was not killed by the rebels, it was she who came forward to collect the corpses of her husband Sejong and Empress Zhen, but then Xiao Sage was only killed by the failed Cha Chou who seized the throne.

At the time of the Vulcan Rebellion, Jingzong was only three years old, and was picked up by the imperial chef Liu Xieli with felt and hidden in the firewood stack, only to escape the disaster, until Muzong was rescued from the rebellion, but he also fell ill and became one of the reasons for his untimely death.

It is said that in the past, when playing with problems in the historical group, Jingzong was often jokingly called Chai Duo Tianzi
