Thousands of former U.S. President Donald Trump's supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 to protest the results of the 2020 presidential election. Nearly 700 people have been charged for their involvement in the riots. U.S. politicians and media called the riots "domestic terrorism," "insurgency, and an attempted coup."

U.S. social media platforms faced increasingly stringent censorship of information in the wake of the riots, with many Democrats saying the companies failed to stop the spread of information that allegedly led to the capitol Hill riots. FBI sources told Reuters in August that the FBI did not see much evidence that the storming of the Capitol was an organized conspiracy. (Editor: HHJ)
