In 1929, he was sent to the warlord forces in Shaanxi and Gansu to do military transportation. In 1930, Xie Zichang, commander of the 4th Cavalry Division, went to Ningxia to do military transportation, he Jinnian and other 4 students signed up to become soldiers, xie Zichang praised "Xiucai rebellion". From then on, He Jinnian fought with Xie Zichang.
In July 1934, Xie Zichang was appointed commander-in-chief of the Red Army guerrilla unit in northern Shaanxi, and He Jinnian was chief of staff. After Xie Zichang was appointed political commissar of the 42nd Division of the Red 26th Army, He Jinnian took over as the commander-in-chief of the guerrillas. In September, He Jinnian was appointed as the commander of the 1st Regiment of the 84th Division of the Red 27th Army, some people called him "two hundred and five", he was happy and did not care, the division commander Yang Qi got up the earliest every day, and also greeted him like this: "Two hundred and five, get up, it's time to go." ”
In the Battle of Laoshan, the Northeast Army was full of firepower, and 7 cadres of the 84th Division were injured and carried down in less than half an hour. In June, He Jinnian followed Liu Zhidan to liberate Ansai, and Shaanxi-Gansu-Gansu border and northern Shaanxi were joined together. In September, the Red 25th Army arrived in northern Shaanxi and merged with the Red Army in northern Shaanxi to form the Red 15th Army, with the commander of the regiment Xu Haidong, the political commissar Cheng Zihua, the deputy commander Liu Zhidan, and He Jinnian as the commander of the 81st Division.

In August 1946, He Jinnian "parachuted" as the commander of the Hejiang Military Region. He Jinnian seconded a regiment and a cavalry regiment to Liu Zhuan Company of the 359th Brigade, and Tan Youlin, the deputy brigade commander, used small detachments to deal with erratic bandits.
From the mudanjiang west to the Laoye Ridge in the east, from the sandwich ditch in the south to the bear blind ditch in the north, the squad took the "three treasures" cake, pickle lumps, and ula grass, and rode on the horse to chase and eat, regardless of the forest, meadow, and swamp to the end. At this time, the railway in the northern part of the peninsula was paralyzed, and the mountainous environment was unfavorable to railway traffic. After the first two battles, the effect of emergency repair and recovery was not good, and the combat materials still relied on cars and their own. With the extension of the front line and the indiscriminate bombardment of the US army, logistical supplies were extremely difficult.
Without trains, cars cannot travel during the day, and it is very difficult and basically impossible to support hundreds of thousands of troops to continue south.
In August 1951, Shenyang established the "China-DPRK Joint Railway Transport Command", with He Jinnian as commander, Zhang Mingyuan as political commissar, and Liu Juying and Nan Xuelong as deputy commanders. In December, Liu Juying was appointed commander, and He Jinnian concentrated on the support of the Northeast Military Region.
