From the four "transformations" to see the "Jiageng spirit"

Speaker: Fu Jiaming

There is such a legendary figure in China's modern and modern history, who fell from the family road to the revitalization of the family style, from the rich side to the tao and li tianxia, from the Three People's Nationalists to the communists, from the rubber king to the charity king, who made great contributions to the Xinhai Revolution, national education, the War of Resistance Against Japan, the War of Liberation, and the construction of New China.

His name may not be known to everyone, but the Xiamen University he founded is widely known, and not long ago, General Secretary Xi Jinping wrote a letter to this century-old famous school with glorious traditions, and also spoke highly of this famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader, who was praised by Mao Zedong as "the banner of overseas Chinese and the glory of the nation". Today, I would like to use the story of his four "transformations" to commemorate the "Jiageng Spirit" with you.

Emphasize righteousness over profit, and realize the transformation from "bankruptcy debt" to "Nanyang overseas Chinese collar"

Born in Fujian in 1874, Chan went to Singapore as a teenager to do business with his father. In 1904, his father's company went bankrupt and closed, and the "family business" that Chen Jiageng took over from his father was nearly 200,000 yuan in arrears. Singapore's law at that time was "father's debt is exempt from repayment", which means that Chen Jiageng does not need to bear his father's debts, but although Chen Jiageng, who is very important for credibility, despite his financial constraints, declared that "those who are determined to do it for a long time will be determined to pay it off to avoid regrets". He said that no matter how long it took, as long as he could do it, he would pay off all the debts on behalf of his father. He started with pineapple planting and processing industry, and planted rubber, worked hard for 4 years, and finally made some profits, he ignored the opposition of relatives and friends, he took the initiative to find creditors to repay debts, and fulfilled his promise. The story of Chen Jiageng's "one promise" quickly spread throughout Southeast Asia, and people were willing to do business with him. After that, Chen Jiageng mainly engaged in the rubber industry, and also engaged in rice industry, shipping industry and other industries, and reached the peak of his career around 1925. Chen Jiageng's standard of "public loyalty and sincerity" is deeply respected and loved by the vast number of Chinese and overseas Chinese. From the 16-year-old Nandu business to the 1934 corporate close, the 44 years of business in the sea of waves, hard work, he left not only a business myth, but also a spirit of self-improvement, honesty and trustworthiness.

Devote yourself to education and realize the transformation from "rich party" to "peach and plum world"

There is no doubt that Chen Jiageng is an outstanding entrepreneur, but his proudest achievement is his existence as an educator, who spent 67 years in his life. Today, nearly 120 schools founded or funded by Chan Kah Kee are located at home and abroad, covering kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, vocational education and universities. Under his advocacy and impetus, xingxue education has become a common practice, and a large number of overseas Chinese and ethnic Chinese are enthusiastic about public welfare and help social undertakings.

In fact, as early as 1894, the 20-year-old Chen Jiageng donated 2,000 silver dollars to establish the famous Ti Zhai Academy in his hometown of Jimei. In the third year of the Republic of China, He founded Jimei Higher And Primary Schools, and since then he has successively founded a series of schools such as girls' primary schools, middle schools, teachers' schools, kindergartens, aquatic products, business sciences, agriculture and forestry, traditional Chinese studies, and kindergarten teachers, and gradually developed, he also built electric light factories, hospitals, science halls, libraries, large stadiums and other facilities in the school. It was his efforts that made the once remote fishing village a world-famous jimei village.

Speaking of Chen Jiageng running a school, we cannot fail to mention the story of "selling the building and maintaining Xiamen University". In 1921, Chen Jiageng founded Xiamen University. However, when the world economic crisis broke out in 1929, Chen Jiageng's company was hit hard, and in 1933, a British bank decided to fund Chen Jiageng's enterprises, on the condition that it must stop funding Xiamen University and Jimei School. Chen Jiageng resolutely replied: "Enterprises can close, and schools must not be stopped!" In order to keep the school, Chen Jiageng raised funds in many ways, and even sold three villas where people lived, and all the money was used as funds for Xiamen University.

He firmly believed that "education is the foundation of the founding of the country, and the rejuvenation of learning is the natural duty of the people." In those days, reading was seen as a way for the rich to pass the time, and the children of the poor did not read. Chen Jiageng ran a school free of charge to let poor children come to study, but they encountered many difficulties and had to go door to door to persuade children from disadvantaged families to study in the school. Mr. Huang Yanpei once said: "There are many people who have made a fortune, and the only one who is willing to take it out is Mr. Chen." "Chen Jiageng was an educator who devoted his life to learning and educating talents for the rejuvenation of the country, among the Chinese entrepreneurs at that time, there were not a few people who were richer than him, but the only Chinese entrepreneur who could consistently donate generously for the future of the country and the nation, and he was very simple, was Chen Jiageng.

The heart is bright, and the transformation from "supporting Chongqing" to "supporting Yan'an" is realized

In 1910, Tan joined the Chinese League in Singapore and raised huge sums of money to sponsor Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary activities. After the "918" incident, the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression began, and he initiated the establishment of the "Association of Overseas Chinese in South Africa" (full name "Nanyang Overseas Chinese Relief Association for Refugees from the Motherland") and served as its chairman, raising hundreds of millions of yuan every year to support the National Government in resisting Japan and saving the country. In October 1938, Wang Jingwei issued a "Peace Speech". Chen Jiageng, in the name of the chairman of the Nanqiao General Committee, sent a direct telegram to Wang Jingwei and sternly pointed out that his propositions were extremely wrong. On October 28 of the same year, an important meeting in the domestic political arena at that time, the National Political Participation Conference, was held in Chongqing. Chen Jiageng, who was in Singapore, as a member of the National Suffragette, sent a telegram proposal to the congress, in which one of the sentences: "Before the enemy leaves the country, he will make peace and commit adultery, which is like a thunderclap that alarmed the Kuomintang authorities and also shook people at home and abroad.

In the winter of 1939, Chiang Kai-shek issued a report on the friction between the Kuomintang and the Communists in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region, which caused uneasiness among patriotic overseas Chinese. In 1940, he led a delegation of overseas Chinese from Nanyang to visit Yan'an, and the Kuomintang tried every means to obstruct his trip to Yan'an. Under the arrangement of Dong Biwu, Lin Boqu, and Ye Jianying, representatives of the Communist Party in Chongqing, and at the formal invitation of Chairman Mao Zedong, Chen Jiageng spent the 9 unforgettable days of his life in Yan'an.

This was the turning point in Chen's political life and a milestone in his life. Before that, he was a staunch "pro-Chiang Kai-shek faction" and did not know much about the Communist Party. Here, he made extensive contact with people from all walks of life, carefully conducted investigation and research, and learned about the magical world full of vitality under the leadership of the Communist Party. Here, he saw private shops lined up and the people being the masters of their own affairs, and gradually changed his original view that the Communist Party "must be communist if there is property." It was also here, through in-depth conversations with Mao Zedong, that he realized that the Kuomintang's insistence on sweeping away the Communists was aimed at surrendering to Japan without scruples, and he understood the communist strategic idea of seeking unity through struggle.

Chen Jiageng also has a very classic little story in Yan'an. He liked to talk to students, and once they talked about the implementation of democratic politics in the border areas, and the ordinary people elected the village chiefs, township chiefs, and county chiefs themselves, and Chen Jiageng questioned: "The common people are illiterate and cannot write the names of the people they want to elect. The students told him: "When the election meeting is held, the candidates sit behind a long table with their backs to the masses, and a bowl is placed behind each person, and the candidates can't see who the people have chosen." The proctors give each voter a few beans according to the quota to be elected, and the voters put the beans in the bowl of someone they trust. In the end, whoever has more beans in the bowl is elected. This is the secret ballot. Chen Jiageng couldn't help but laugh after listening to it, and he humorously called it the "bean election", believing that it embodied the good style of the Communist Party in handling things fairly and truly democratically.

With the mood of "joy and consolation cannot be described, like plucking clouds and fog and seeing the blue sky," Chen Jiageng enthusiastically publicized to home and abroad what he had seen and heard in Yan'an, publicized the great achievements made in the construction of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region, and publicized the sincere attitude and wise policy of the CPC in uniting and saving the country. "China's hope is in Yan'an," he preached all the way. The just words of a patriotic old man without party affiliation have greatly encouraged the people in the rear areas under the strict control of the Kuomintang. Chiang Kai-shek, enraged, dismissed Chen Jiageng from his position as a senator of the National SuffrageTte in 1942, and secret agents repeatedly harassed him, forcing him to remain anonymous on the island of Java for 10 years. It was this unswerving patriotic spirit that enabled him to finally embark on the road of cooperation with the Communist Party.

Worry about the country and the people, and realize the transformation from the "rubber king" to the "great country"

In 1949, Chen Jiageng returned to the motherland of "dreaming of god and relaxation" and attended the first plenary session of the Chinese Political Consultative Conference at the invitation of Mao Zedong. After the founding of New China, Chen Jiageng returned to China to settle down, and successively served as a member of the Central People's Government, a member of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee, a member of the East China Military and Political Committee, and the chairman of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese.

Chen Jiageng used his own real actions to explain what is called patriotic overseas Chinese, and when he was more than a year old, he still worked tirelessly to inspect various parts of the motherland and devoted himself to the construction of the socialist cause. Until his death, he also made a will to donate all his property to the country for the construction of the motherland, and the word "patriotic" was integrated into Chen Jiageng's flesh and blood. What is even more valuable about him is that as the leader of overseas Chinese, in safeguarding the reunification of the motherland, he has set a good patriotic example for all overseas Chinese and ethnic Chinese, and as early as the construction of Jimei AoYuan, Mr. Li carved Taiwan in the territory of China. In dealing with foreign aggression, Mr. Mister's attitude is very clear, that is, resolutely resist Japan and resolutely resist aggression! He has made his position clear with practical actions, donated money and materials, contributed to others, and did his best to help the country tide over difficulties and solve the crisis. "The wealth is hard-earned by itself, and it should be generously donated by me" "The land of the ancestors must not be let people in size, on the contrary, it is also a national thief" "The purpose of saving the country is nothing more than to seek the integrity of the territory and the restoration of sovereignty", Mr. Sir's words are sonorous and powerful, and they seem to be still ringing in the ears, which is touching.

Realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is the common aspiration of the sons and daughters of China at home and abroad, and it is also the lifelong pursuit of countless revolutionary ancestors. A hundred years ago, the members of the patriotic united front represented by Mr. Chen Jiageng put the country first and the nation first, struggled hard and made unremitting efforts to improve themselves. Today, a hundred years later, we are stepping forward to the prosperous world, standing at the intersection of the "two hundred years" history, let us keep firmly in mind the history of the party and the people's century-old struggle, learn history to be clear and reasonable, learn history to increase credibility, learn history to revere morality, study history to practice, inherit the revolutionary tradition, adhere to the aspiration of serving the country, gather together the majestic power of national rejuvenation, and realize the dream of national rejuvenation!
