Later Yan's founding emperor Murong Chui (慕容崔), whose original name was Ba, was the fifth son of Former Yan's founding emperor Murong Hao,born in 326 AD, who had been brave and resourceful from an early age, and was very favored by Murong Hao, so he named him Ba, and prepared to make him crown prince; Later, due to the persuasion of his courtiers, although he was not made a prince, he favored him more than the prince. Therefore, the crown prince Murong Jun was very jealous of Murong Ba's talent and favor.

When Murong Jun ascended the throne as emperor, he tried to suppress Murong Ba, and changed his name from "Hanging" to "Hanging" on the grounds that he had fallen off his horse and broke his teeth. Therefore, during the reign of Murong Hao, this fifth son was invincible during the Eastern Expedition and the Western War, and was named Murong Ba; During the reign of Murong Jun, after April 354, the name was changed to Murong Chui.

During Murong Rong's reign, before his death, Murong Ke of Dazai suggested that Murong Be entrusted with important duties. Because the emperor was young, he said to the emperor's brother Murong Xian, the King of Anle: "Murong Chui, the king of Wu, is talented and resourceful, and if you can elect him as the Grand Sima you will certainly be able to unify the four seas." We must put the country first, and do not forget the evil for the sake of greed for power. However, after Murong Ke's death, Murong Jue not only did not agree to reuse Murong Chui, but instead conspired with the empress dowager to wait for an opportunity to get rid of him.

In November 369, in the name of requesting to hunt on the mainland, Murong Chui left the city in light armor and defected to Former Qin, where he was given the title of Crown General and Marquis of Bintu, and Murong Kai was made a general of Ji Crossbow. Later, Murong Chui helped Former Qin eliminate Former Yan.

In November 383, at the Battle of Shuishui, All the armies of Former Qin were scattered, but murong Chui's 30,000 men and horses were completely preserved. At this time, Jian Jian also came with more than a thousand remnants of his soldiers. Murong's brothers and sons, who had joined Murong Chui in Former Qin, wanted to take advantage of former Qin's defeat, kill Jian Jian, and restore the Yan state.

Murong Chui had long wished to restore the foundation of the Yan Dynasty, but he definitely did not want to take advantage of the danger of others and fall into the well. He said: "In the past, I was not tolerated by Murong Jue of Taifu, had no place to live, and fled to the Qin Kingdom. How could I forget this kindness?" If you don't kill Jian Jian, how can you leave? When he marched to Shichi, he made an excuse and said to Jian Jian: "The people in the remote areas in the north have heard that your army is unfavorable and that they are agitating with each other, so I ask the edict to go to the town to comfort and recruit them, and by the way pay homage to the mausoleum of the former emperor." Jian Jian agreed.

In early January 384, when Murong Chui arrived at Xingyang, his subordinates insisted on persuading him to take the title of Emperor, and Murong Chui agreed, declaring himself a general and the King of Yan; He appointed his younger brother Murong De (慕容德) as the Grand General of cheqi and the Prince of Fanyang; Murong Kai was appointed as the Grand General of Zhenxi and the Prince of Taiyuan. On January 26, Murong Chui arrived at Yecheng and changed the 20th year of Former Qin Jianyuan to the first year of Later Yan, and made his eldest son Murong Bao crown prince. On December 23, 385, Murong Chui made the capital Zhongshan (中山, in modern Ding County, Hebei); In January 386, Murong Chui assumed the throne as emperor, and in February, he changed his era name to Jianxing and set up Gongqing Shangshu Hundred Officials. On April 10, 396, Murong Chui died at the age of 71, reigning for 13 years.
