It is difficult to distinguish between true and false: Dong Zhuo's most trusted adviser Wu Qiong and Wu Fu, the prototype of Cao Cao's sword, are the same person?

Dong Zhuo proposed the matter of moving the capital, and some people opposed it and some people submitted. Among the people who opposed Dong Zhuo, there were two who were particularly resolute, and they were Wu Qiong, a city gate colonel who Dong Zhuo trusted very much before, and Zhou Yi, a lieutenant of the Overseer Military Academy. Previously, because of their recommendation, including Han Fu, Zhang Mi and a large number of other people were appointed as local county guards, and because of their good words, Dong Zhuo appointed Yuan Shao, who abandoned his official position and ran away, as the Bohai County Guard. Now Dong Zhuo saw that they had actually jumped out again to oppose his own move to the capital, so the new account and the old account were calculated together, and the two people were all beheaded. This should be the first time that Dong Zhuo used a knife against a scholar because of a matter of government affairs. When Lu Zhi jumped out to oppose Dong Zhuo's deposing of the emperor, Dong Zhuo put up with it. Just now Yang Biao and others opposed him to move the capital, dong Zhuo put up with it. But in the face of Wu Qiong and Zhou Yi, the two people he once trusted the most, Dong Zhuo did not hold back.

There is another theory that Wu Qiong and Zhou Yi were killed in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, saying that it was because the two of them had an affair with Yuan Shao's gang that Dong Zhuo killed them. Which claim is true is difficult to confirm. Of the two people who were killed, Zhou Yi didn't have much to say. However, there is a doubt about this Wu Qiong, which is difficult to determine in history. Let's take a quick look.

Wu Qiong was a native of Runan (present-day Zhumadian, Henan), and was a lieutenant of the City Gate. And in the history books, there is a person named Wu Fu, who has the same surname Wu, who is also a Runan, also known as Deyu, and his official position is Yue Riding Lieutenant. In the Book of Later Han and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Wu Qiong has always been Dong Zhuo's confidant. And this Wu Fu was once He Jin's doorman, and Dong Zhuo was not accustomed to Dong Zhuo's monopolistic behavior after he came to power. One day, Wu Fu wore small armor and hid a sabre in his arms to see Dong Zhuo, preparing to find an opportunity to assassinate Dong Zhuo. When he reported to Dong Zhuo that he was leaving, and Dong Zhuo came out to send him, Wu Fu drew his sword and came out to assassinate Dong Zhuo. Unfortunately, Dong Zhuo is not a vegetarian, and he has arm strength and agility, and Wu Fu did not stab, but was held by Dong Zhuo.

Figure 2: Wu Fu who assassinated Dong Zhuo ("Dong Zhuo Enters Beijing")

After Dong Zhuo grabbed Wu Fu, he scolded sharply, "Do you want to rebel?" Wu Fu righteously said, "When did you become my monarch?" When did I become your courtier? You are the usurper of this chaotic country, a traitor who has committed a great wicked wickedness. Today I have come to kill you, a traitor, and I would like to split your traitor's car in the city to thank the world, and today I am dead. Of course, Dong Zhuo would not let go of this Wu Fu, so he killed him. Like Wu Qiong, Wu Fu was also killed.

Wu Qiong and Wu Fu had so many things in common, so much that Pei Songzhi, who gave a note to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, doubted whether these two people were one person. The only difference between the two people is the method of death, in the eyes of the scholars at that time, of course, Wu Fu was more admirable. But if you look at it from the perspective of being beneficial to the Eastern Han Dynasty, in fact, Wu Qiong's approach is more worthy of respect. In my opinion, there is a 99% chance that these two people are the same person.

Figure 4: Cao Cao's Sacrifice of the Knife ("Catching and Releasing Cao")

From the assassination of Dong Zhuo by Wu Fu, do you think of another person? Did you also think of Cao Cao, but Cao Cao escaped by chance. But with all of Cao Cao's overall view and level of cognition, would Cao Cao really do such a thing that an assassin could do? If Cao Cao really tried to assassinate Dong Zhuo, then he really wasn't the cao cao with great talent. Looking at the letter from Jizhou's assassin Shi Wangfen preparing for a coup d'état to depose the reigning Han Ling Emperor at that time, we can see that Cao Cao did not think that such a reckless replacement of a person in power could change the overall situation. On the contrary, because of the sudden disappearance of this controller, it will lead to greater chaos. The situation after Dong Zhuo was killed by Wang Yun and Lü Bu is a clear proof.
