[Young female scientist] Chen Lili: Laughter is the most beautiful language in the world

author:When the reform of the Association for Science and Technology is underway

There are 7.6 billion people in the world, 233 countries and regions, more than 7,000 languages, only one language can instantly close the distance between people without learning, that is, smiles. However, many people have lost their bright smiles due to tooth and maxillofacial deformities such as "big teeth", "bird's beak deformity", "ground wrapping heaven", "shoehorn face", especially young children, who are often ridiculed by classmates or small partners, and then produce a sense of humility and isolation, which seriously affects mental health and growth and development. The data show that the incidence of dental and maxillofacial deformities in China is as high as 60-70%, of which the incidence of severe jaw development deformities with dental malocclusion deformities is about 5%.

"The biggest challenge with dental and maxillofacial deformities is the need for individual design and treatment to ensure the best treatment time, shortest recovery cycle and optimal orthodontic regimen." Chen Lili, director of the Department of Stomatology and director of the Department of Stomatology of Union Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, introduced that her specialty is orthodontics, that is, through orthodontics or orthodontics- orthognathic combination treatment, to achieve the coordination of dentition, jawbone, facial shape, and improve chewing, beautiful face, and restore self-confidence.

The causes of tooth and maxillofacial deformities are complex, and are generally divided into two categories in medicine: genetic factors and environmental factors. "Genetic factors play an important role in the occurrence and development of malformations; environmental factors include both prenatal (in the mother's womb) and postnatal." Chen Lili analyzed one by one: "The role of intrauterine teratogenic factors such as viral infection, malnutrition, endocrine, and external force in the embryonic development process may lead to abnormal maxillofacial development; acquired factors mainly include changes in neuromuscular adaptive function, systemic diseases or local infections, long-term bad habits of the oral cavity such as finger sucking, oral breathing and tongue extension swallowing, as well as tooth and maxillofacial development deformities caused by trauma or trauma." ”

Tooth and maxillofacial deformities are usually formed gradually during the growth and development of the maxillofacial region, so understanding the law of maxillofacial growth and development is of great clinical significance for accurate diagnosis and reasonable design of correction programs. The "Quantitative Staging Method (QCVM) of Cervical Vertebral Bone Age" founded by Chen Lili's research group can accurately assess the stage of maxillofacial growth and development, determine the best time for orthopaedic treatment of jaws, and prevent the occurrence of severe bony malocclusion, which is an important breakthrough in the field of orthodontics. Since its publication in the American Journal of Orthodontics in 2008, the QCVM staging method has been promoted and applied in more than 50 well-known oral medical institutions in more than 20 provinces across the country, benefiting more than 40,000 patients and being compiled into the national postgraduate planning textbook "Orthodontics".

She also conducted research on the characteristics of biorhythms of maxillofacial tissues and the regulatory effect of biorhythms on jaw growth, and created a series of new strategies for the prevention and repair of maxillofacial deformities, which promoted the formation of corrective treatment methods and human biorhythms, which not only effectively shortened the correction cycle, but also improved the quality of life of patients, and the relevant results were compiled into the national college textbook "Oral Science".

[Young female scientist] Chen Lili: Laughter is the most beautiful language in the world

In more than ten years of clinical career, Chen Lili has helped thousands of patients to reshape their smiles, and is known as the "white angel who sows a bright smile", but she is not satisfied with a doctor who "ingeniously works and rejuvenates with clever hands", but prefers to be a medical scientist who deeply studies the development of teeth and maxillofacial development and deformity. In her view, clinical and research are highly unified and inseparable. "Orthodontics is a practical and highly operational science, all scientific research directions are derived from real clinical cases or problems, and all scientific research results are also to provide patients with better clinical treatment methods."

With excellent clinical skills and broad scientific research vision, this is a valuable asset granted to Chen Lili by the rich and solid study process. Perhaps she did not expect that she would not know how to volunteer because her relatives and friends suggested that "it is good to be a dentist", and she would traverse Wuhan University, Four Medical University and Peking University, the third of the "Five Famous Schools of Oral Medicine in China", during this master's and doctoral period, and was deeply obsessed with the study of dental and maxillofacial deformities.

Chen Lili admitted that she was strongly inspired by the words and deeds of Professor Lin Jiuxiang, then vice president of Peking University and a titan of the domestic orthodontic community. As vice president, Professor Lin still does not give up his beloved medical, teaching and scientific research in addition to his busy administrative work, and now in his seventies, he still insists on going to the outpatient clinic every week, doing the most difficult cases. He used his life, which had been tempered by the times, to set up the banner of 'patriotism, progress, democracy, and science', but modestly said that 'he just didn't waste time and did something useful'. In him, he shines with the attitude of Peking University people and the feelings of home and country. "Just as the ancients clouded" adopted children such as Yang Zhilan, they not only accumulate learning to cultivate it, but also accumulate goodness to nourish it. Whenever she remembers the time in Yanyuan, Chen Lili is full of gratitude and pride.

The subsequent experience of further study at Harvard University opened the door to the forefront of world medicine for her, and also made her understand that the level of medicine of a doctor, a hospital, and even a country is not the number of patients cured, but the ability to overcome diseases.

Therefore, Chen Lili not only pays attention to cultivating students' international vision, but also strives to "let the world understand Chinese stomatology and let Chinese stomatology go to the world". She is one of the medical professors with the largest number of international students trained by Huazhong University of Science and Technology, with students in 16 countries including Spain, South Korea, Albania, and Nepal. She has also been invited to give academic lectures at the world's authoritative orthodontic conference for many times, and continuously enhances the world influence of Chinese stomatology.

Unconsciously, Chen Lili has also become her son's role model and banner. Still in high school, he is becoming more and more interested in oral medicine, and perhaps he has made a secret decision in his heart. "But he doesn't want to rely on my aura, and he doesn't want to take my shortcuts," Chen Lili said with a smile, "he will discover the power of smile on his own." ”
