In the mid-to-late nineteenth century, with the defeat of the Opium Wars, China was forced to open its doors to the world. This period was a period of humiliation and "great changes not seen in thousands of years" in which China was humiliated and striving to become stronger.
In the context of such an era, the old ancient country of the East began to awaken, many people of insight learned from the West for the sake of China's prosperity and strength, and a large number of people with open eyes to the world and advanced scientific and cultural knowledge in modern times emerged, and they jointly composed a legend.
Today, it is very easy to study abroad, but in the late Qing Dynasty more than a hundred years ago, it was like a "fantasy" for many people, and only a very few people were able to study in foreign countries. For the majority of women, there is no need to say that studying abroad is not eligible for education. But in such an era, China has come out of the earliest female students.
In the feudal society where men were inferior to women, the majority of women rarely had access to education, and they knew almost nothing about other cultural knowledge except for the feudal moral teachings such as the "Four Books of Women". The idea that "a woman's talentlessness is virtue" is like a floodgate, keeping countless women out of the school.
With the entry of missionaries into China, the rise of the trend of Western learning and eastern learning, many people of insight began to realize the importance of women's education. Whether it is Western missionaries, Chinese reformers, and revolutionary parties, they all believe that women are the mothers of their children, they have the responsibility of their children's enlightenment, if they lack due cultural knowledge, it is difficult to cultivate a sound next generation, which in turn affects the development of the whole country, and China's poverty and backwardness also have a lot to do with this. Under their strong advocacy, Chinese women's education began to take off, and many girls went out of the boudoir to learn various advanced knowledge and become useful people to society. It is this background of the times that gave birth to the earliest female students in China.
In 1844, the British female missionary Edsay established a girls' school in Ningbo, the earliest female school in China, and since then the majority of women have had the opportunity to receive education, and The cause of Education in China has since turned a new page. The following year, the American Presbyterian missionary Mai Jiatian came to Ningbo, where he set up Chongxin Yishu to develop education in China.
When Mai Jiatian was preaching in China, there was a Chinese assistant named Jin Dingyuan. However, in 1867, a plague broke out in Ningbo, and Pastor Jin and his wife unfortunately contracted the disease and died, leaving behind their three-year-old daughter Jin Yamei (formerly known as Jin Amei, also known as Jin Yamei).
Mai Jiatian saw that the young Jin Yamei was lonely and bitter, so he adopted her as an adopted daughter and raised her to grow up. And brought her back to the United States to attend kindergarten, which may be the first girl in China to receive modern preschool education.
In 1872, He became a professor of law and naturalism at Tokyo Imperial University, and took Kim Yamei to Japan. Jin Yamei is sensitive and studious, and soon after coming to Japan, she became proficient in the local language. Plus her native language Chinese and experience attending kindergarten in the United States. At a young age, he mastered Chinese, English and Japanese.
When Jin Yamei turned 18, Mai Jiatian saw that she was a malleable talent, so he sent her to study at an American university. She was successfully admitted to the prestigious Women's Medical University affiliated with the University of New York and was the only Chinese student in the school. Jin Yamei thus became the first female student in China. She was diligent and studious during her school years, and her grades have always been among the best, which has impressed many white girls with this girl from the East and has been loved by the majority of teachers and students.
After three years of study, in 1885 Jin Yamei graduated with the first place in the class and became a female doctor. She quickly found suitable jobs in the United States, working in hospitals in Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C. Her medical theory is very exquisite, and she is highly accomplished in the use of microscopy technology, and has made many scientific breakthroughs. Her academic papers have been published in the prestigious New York Medical Journal and other medical journals. At that time, it was well-known in the medical community of New York.
While jin Yamei won the honor in the United States, she did not forget her country, that China, which is still poor and weak, and urgently needs advanced science and culture. She resolutely gave up her career in the United States and returned to China.
In 1888, Jin Yamei set foot on Chinese soil, where she worked in a church hospital in Xiamen. Soon after, however, he was forced to go to Japan for convalescence due to illness, and after recovering from his illness, he served in the local church and engaged in medical research.
In 1905, Jin Yamei, who had higher professional ability, returned to China again to engage in medical work and rescue the suffering public. Her exquisite skills, high medical ethics, and the spirit of Christian fraternity in the spirit of treatment of patients, she is welcomed by people from all walks of life, and the number of seekers is endless. Becoming a female doctor who was deeply respected by the public, she enjoyed a high reputation in China's medical circles at that time.
Jin Yamei was soon appreciated by the Qing government. In 1907, he entered the Beiyang Women's Hospital founded by Yuan Shikai as the president. The following year, she presided over the Tianjin Medical School and became a medical educator. In order to train more medical staff and meet the needs of the public. She traveled in many ways to win the Qing government to allocate 20,000 taels of silver.
In 1908, she founded the first nursing school in Tianjin. The nursing school is attached to The Beiyang Women's Hospital, originally known as the Women's Medical Hall. She selflessly passed on the modern medical science knowledge and more than 20 years of experience and diagnostic technology she gained abroad to students, and cultivated a large group of medical talents in China's medical community.
Jin Yamei attaches great importance to social welfare and is one of the earliest founders of the Red Cross Society of China. The era she experienced was a period of chaos in China, when many people lost their lives in warlord wars and various natural and man-made disasters, failing to get timely rescue. She then initiated the Tianjin Red Cross Society with Dr. Sun Gan, and collected donations from all sides, collecting 3,000 silver yuan to heal the wounded in the war.
The tragic experience of losing her parents since childhood made Jin Yamei full of pity for the orphans and experienced their physical, mental and spiritual pain. During her time in Beiping (Beijing), she often squeezed out breaks to visit children in orphanages. Treat the children, send them warmth, and call on all sectors of society to pay attention to the lives of orphans. In addition, she enthusiastically supports the work of the Qinghe Experimental Center for Poverty Alleviation sponsored by the Social Department of Yenching University.
On March 4, 1934, Dr. Kim Yamei rested in peace, at the age of 70. Before her death, she dedicated all her savings to Yenching University and Tianjin Muzhai School. Her colleague Dr. Maxwell said in his eulogy: "A technically savvy microscopist, a renowned expert in the international medical community, a great and unique woman ... She is a woman who has experienced so much pain and misfortune, alone, and never loses her sharpness or reveals it. What is even more noble is that she thus did much for the benefit of the children and workers of this country until the end of her life."
