Bird chasers on the banks of the Minjiang River

On the afternoon of December 11, under the warm winter sun, the small gully of Zhongyan Village in Ruifeng Town, Qingshen County, at an altitude of more than 500 meters, was quiet and warm, in a persimmon tree, a gray-bodied, red-winged, white-bellied bird just flew to the treetops, and He Gang, who had been lurking next to the tree for 3 hours, whispered to communicate with his friends, and quickly pressed the shutter, Kakaka, this small bird from the Himalayas was frozen, refreshing the bird record list of Qingshen County.

He Gang, a member of the Photography and Painting Association of the Qingshen County CPPCC Committee, photographed birds, almost exhausting all his spare time, but he enjoyed it.

In order to photograph and record the birds in Qingshen County, since 2017, more than 10 members of the Qingshen County CPPCC Photography and Painting Association, including He Gang, have voluntarily formed a "bird shooting team", which has opened the prelude to going up the mountain to the countryside and chasing birds, so far, they have insisted on more than 1,000 days and nights, collected and sorted out more than 140 species of bird data, and took the lead in establishing a county-level bird archive in the province.

Through the lens of He Gang, the birds hidden in nature began to approach the eyes of the world and were well known.

They harvested surprises on the way to chase birds, but also encountered losses, and saw hope.

Reap the surprises

Not only the red-winged partridge, but this year, on the persimmon trees in the xiaogou Mountain Stream, He Gang and his friends found a total of 5 new species of birds, all of which were relocated.

This new discovery shocked the entire Qingshen photography circle.

"Great, there is one more bird found in Qingshen, and now the total number is close to 150." On the afternoon of December 11, after learning the news that He Gang had successfully photographed Ban Yu, Tan Yongzhong, head of the Photography and Painting Association of the Qingshen County CPPCC Committee, danced happily.

Birds are the spirits of the forest, there are more than 7,000 species of birds in the world, more than 1,300 species in China, and more than 700 species found in Sichuan, but in daily life, everyone can see no more than 30 species of birds with the naked eye, and more birds are difficult to be seen by the naked eye, and they are not familiar with people.

"Unfamiliar, why talk about protection?"

Tan Yongzhong, who is over 50 years old, is a photography enthusiast, and in 2017, he witnessed the change of birds in the Qingshen region from more to less, and realized that he should pick up the camera in his hand and make a contribution to promoting the popularization of bird knowledge and promoting environmental protection.

"When I was a child, I did a lot of bird pest things, slingshot birds, net birds, bird nests, etc., more than 10 years ago, everyone can see fewer and fewer birds with the naked eye, if you do not record the beauty of birds, you may not see it in the later stage", stemming from a sense of guilt and a responsibility, Tan Yongzhong and photography enthusiasts decided to spontaneously form a "bird shooting team" to build a file for the birds of the blue god, and the members of this folk bird love team composed of civil servants, teachers, businessmen and ordinary people use their spare time to go deep into the countryside, mountain streams and dams. Chase bird trails, practice bird love, and promote environmental protection knowledge.

Mandarin ducks, kestrels, eagle owls, short-eared owls, crested eagles, sparrowhawks... After chasing birds for three years, when rare birds were found and recorded, the members of the "bird shooting team" gradually became experts in bird soil from laymen, and thus opened the door to the world of birds.

In 2018, in order to promote the popularization of bird knowledge, Tan Yongzhong and photography enthusiasts combined the bird pictures they took, made a beautiful bird album, and gave it to their friends.

Encounter loss

But along with the surprise of photographing a new bird, there is also the loss of seeing the birds injured.

Born in 1966, Yang Yanggang, a full-time photography teacher at Qingshen County Experimental Primary School, is a member of the "Bird Shooting Team", photographing countless birds and receiving countless surprises, but an encounter on the Minjiang River beach a few years ago is still a sore spot buried in his heart.

Bird chasers on the banks of the Minjiang River

In the early spring of a few years ago, Yang Yangang, who was collecting wind on the minjiang river, found a gray-headed wheat chicken dying in the riverside beach. Walking in, a rusty iron clamp killed the neck of the gray-headed wheat chicken, and when it was in danger, the gray-headed wheat chicken showed a desperate look.

In the early spring, the mud on the river beach was piled up, cold and bone-chilling, and it was difficult to know the bottom, Yang Yanggang hesitated for a long time between saving and not saving.

After mu ran down a few photographs and enlarging the terrified eyes of the gray-headed wheat chicken, he was struck by the desperate look in his eyes.

So, he resolutely dropped the camera, took off his shoes, socks, and trousers, and ran away, breaking the iron clip, saving this beautiful forest elf, and angrily throwing the iron clip into the gushing Min River.

In tan Yongzhong's heart, there is also a lingering haze.

A few years ago, Tan Yongzhong heard that in the Yellow Fruit Tree at the entrance of Zhongyan Temple in Qingshen County, there lived 2 national second-class protected birds eagle owl, one day Tan Yongzhong excitedly picked up the camera, came to the tree to prepare to shoot, but disappointed to find that there was no bird track, the original eagle owl's chicks have been caught, two adult birds hovered in the tree for several days and nights, the call was desolate, at that moment, after hearing the story of the nearby farmers, Tan Yongzhong's heart was difficult to calm down for a long time.

"Birds are beautiful, but they are fragile, so why should humans harm birds?" Tan Yongzhong hated the behavior of killing birds.

"We must let more people see and fall in love with beautiful birds, and let more people join the action of loving birds and protecting birds." Tan Yongzhong and his friends made a vow: chase birds for life and love birds all their lives.

In the past three years, Yang Yanggang has used every opportunity to photograph birds and make ppts to explain the knowledge of birds around him to the children in the school, so far, he has photographed more than 90 species of birds and explained bird knowledge to students dozens of times.

No matter how busy the work is, Tan Yongzhong will take time to organize bird shooting activities, as soon as he hears that a farmer has caught a rare bird, he will rush to the scene to rescue it at the first time, and in three years, he will personally participate in two rescue operations for rare birds.

See hope

While photographing birds, while practicing bird love behavior, with the improvement of the ecological environment and the enhancement of the public's awareness of bird love, Tan Yongzhong and the team members gradually saw hope while photographing birds.

Tan Yongzhong told reporters that since 2017, there were only 100 species of birds photographed, but the second year reached more than 130 species, and this year there were more than 140 species photographed, an increase of more than 10 species.

Among the more than 140 species of birds this year, 58 species of migratory birds are foreign, and the 10 new species of birds added this year are all migratory birds.

Among these birds, there are 10 species of national second-level and above protected birds, and more than 80% of the birds found in the county are birds listed in the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species.

Tan Yongzhong is very pleased that the water quality of the Minjiang River, which was not up to standard in the past, is slowly changing, the phosphorus content in the water is decreasing, the water quality is getting better year by year, and the behavior of discharging wastewater into the river has been effectively curbed, from January to November this year, the water quality of the meishan exit section of the main stream of the Min River has been maintained in Class III., and the excellent water quality rate of the 2 national assessment sections has reached 100%, and the public's awareness of loving birds has also improved rapidly.

Not long ago, Liu Angui, a farmer near the county's Guanting Reservoir, told Tan Yongzhong that a group of Mandarin ducks seen at the reservoir two years ago had not left, but had stayed in the reservoir to thrive, and now it had become two pairs.

There are less than 1,000 remaining birds in the world, and the blue-headed diving duck, which is listed on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species, is also found in the Minjiang section of Qiaolou Village in Qingzhu Street...

Located on the edge of the Chengdu Plain, Qingshen County, with half of the hills and dam areas, the highest altitude of the mountains in the jurisdiction is only more than 700 meters, and there is no lush mountain forest, but it is rare to attract so many rare birds.

"The emergence of various rare birds is a visual embodiment of the improvement of the local ecological environment, and the two years when rare birds have been increasing are precisely the key two years for the continuous improvement of the local water environment, especially the ecological environment." Tan Yongzhong believes that in addition to recording birds, it is more important to record the practice of local ecological civilization.
