BBC精選70部英聯邦作家作品，《哈利·波特》等落選

2022年是英國女王伊麗莎白二世在位70周年。近日，英國廣播公司（British Broadcasting Corporation，BBC）聯合英國閱讀機構（The Reading Agency）共同推出一份包含70部作品在内的書單，入選作品覆寫六大洲共計31個英聯邦國家，被認為是足以“定義英國社會及其文化遺産的共享叙事”。《哈利·波特》《指環王》等暢銷作品并未出現在名單之列。

據英國《獨立報》等媒體消息，當地時間4月18日，英國廣播公司（British Broadcasting Corporation，BBC）聯合英國閱讀機構（The Reading Agency）正式釋出包含70部英聯邦作家作品的長書單。入選作品按照出版時間劃分，自1952年英國女王伊麗莎白二世登基起，每10年精選10部作品分别代表其在位的七個10年。其中多部作品也為中國讀者所熟知。

今年是96歲的伊麗莎白二世女王登基70周年，又被稱為“白金禧年”（暫譯，Platinum Jubilees）。“大禧年閱讀”（暫譯，The Big Jubilee Read）作為系列慶典活動之一，借此回顧在其統治的70年間英聯邦各國作者出版的經典書籍，以期将英國公衆團結在這些足以“定義英國社會及其文化遺産的共享叙事”周圍。

該書單入選作品覆寫六大洲共計31個英聯邦國家，大部分為長篇小說，也包含短篇小說集《小船》（暫譯，The Boat）等，以及詩集如《一個博物學家的死亡》（暫譯，Death of a Naturalist），該作品是1995年諾貝爾文學獎得主謝默斯·希尼（Seamus Heaney）的第一部作品。

另有多部作品已完成影視化改編。其中，1962年英國作家安東尼·伯吉斯（Anthony Burgess）的《發條橙》（A Clockwork Orange）、1981年英裔印度作家薩爾曼·拉什迪（Salman Rushdie）的《午夜的孩子》（Midnight’s Children）都被改編為電影。加拿大作家瑪格麗特·阿特伍德（Margaret Atwood）于1985年創作的反烏托邦小說《使女的故事》（The Handmaid’s Tale）則被改編成電視劇搬上熒屏。而由李安執導、改編自另一位加拿大作家揚·馬特爾（Yann Martel）同名小說的《少年派的奇幻漂流》（Life of Pi）曾在第85屆奧斯卡頒獎典禮上斬獲四項大獎，成為一代人心中的經典。

除上述知名作品外，這份書單還包括部分鮮為人知的經典。它們既是過往時代的剪影，也與今時今日息息相關。千裡達托貝哥人薩姆·塞爾文（Sam Selvon）在1956年出版的《孤獨的倫敦人》（暫譯，The Lonely Londoners）中講述了“疾風一代”（Windrush Generation）是如何抵達英國并逐漸适應新生活的。第二次世界大戰後，英國面臨嚴重的勞動力短缺問題。1948年《英國國籍法》賦予加勒比殖民地區居民以英國公民身份及在英定居權。同年，英國政府派出“帝國疾風号”（HMT Empire Windrush）船艦抵達牙買加，将500餘名加勒比海人帶回英國本土工作生活。截至1970年，已有近50萬加勒比人先後移居英國。他們被稱為“疾風一代”。然而，近年來，英國政壇深陷“疾風醜聞”，昔日的“英國臣民”如今面臨着被驅逐出境的威脅。

“這份書單提供了一個真正挖掘各大洲故事的機會。它帶領讀者穿越幾十年，重新走近那些我們可能從來沒有讀過的作品。”BBC藝術和古典音樂電視部主任蘇西·克萊因（Suzy Klein）認為，女王的白金禧年是一個“絕佳的時機”，不同年齡段的讀者都能借此機會分享彼此對書籍的熱愛。

不過，在名單公布後，英國多家媒體注意到作家J.K.羅琳（JK Rowling）的《哈利·波特》系列（Harry Potter）未列入其中。該系列自1997年出版以來，已在全球累計銷售超過5億本。對此，倫敦瑪麗女王大學現當代文學名譽教授蘇希拉·納斯塔（Susheila Nasta）表示：“1992到2001年的10年間，英聯邦出版的書籍越來越多，是以我們決定為同樣優秀的作品騰出空間”。同時，她稱這份書單的目的是推薦讀者“此前可能沒有讀過”的書籍。此外，在組委會看來，《哈利·波特》主要被認為是“兒童讀物”。

這一回應也遭到部分人士質疑。有批評聲音指出，澳洲作家馬庫斯·祖薩克（Markus Zusak）2005年出版的小說《偷書賊》（The Book Thief）也被認為是一本兒童讀物，但還是入選了。在過去的兩年間，羅琳因在社交平台的發言被指“傷害跨性别者的感情”而深陷争議。除《哈利·波特》外，約翰·托爾金（JRR Tolkien）的《指環王》（Lord of the Rings）以及伊恩·弗萊明（Ian Fleming）的《詹姆斯·邦德》系列（James Bond）也被排除在名單之外，兩部作品均在全球售出超過1億本書。2007年諾貝爾文學獎得主多麗絲·萊辛（Doris Lessing）的《金色筆記》（The Golden Notebook）也遺憾落選，該作品曾被評委會盛贊為“20世紀審視男女關系的巅峰之作”。
