一、数词的用法-表示数目
数词在表示数目时可分为两大类：具体的数目和大概的数目。
1.表示具体的数目
(1)基数词(+hundred/thousand/...)+可数名词；例如：
- The boy went door to door and gathered more than two hundred signatures. 男孩挨家挨户地收集了两百多个签名。
- This solid stone, square tower has remained standing for one thousand years. 这座坚固的方形石塔已经屹立了一千年。
(2)注意：hundred、thousand 和million等表示具体数目时用单数，不加S。例如：
- five hundred feet high (正确)五百英尺高
- five hundreds feet high (错误)

2.表示大概的数目
(1)hundreds/thousands/millions/...+of+可数名词复数；例如：
- Thousands of people were helped. 成千上万的人们得到了帮助。
- This month millions of American kids can forget about classroom bells. 这个月，上百万的美国孩子可以忘记上课铃声。
(2)a few/several/many/some/...+hundred/thousand/…+可数名词复数；例如：
- We turned the corner and saw the village a few hundred metres away. 我们拐了个弯就看见了几百米开外的村庄。
- The African forest elephant has been distinct species for several million years. 几百万年来，非洲森林象一直是独特的物种。
(3)several/many/some/...+hundreds/thousands/...+ of+可数名词复数；例如：
- Many thousands of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. 每次(霍乱)爆发就会有成千上万的人在恐惧中死去。

3.表示数量的特殊词汇dozen(十二)和score(二十)的用法
(1)与具体数词或many, several等词连用，通常用单数; 若后接名词，通常也无须用介词of。例如:
- Two dozen branches were established across the nation. 全国各地成立了二十多家分部。
- three dozen eggs 三打鸡蛋
- three score people 60人
- Authorities said 10 people were injured and several dozen arrested. 当局称有十人受伤以及几十人被捕。
(2)不与具体数词连用、表示不确定的数量时，用复数，后通常接of。例如:
- Dozens of new cafes appear to change the situation. 几十家新的咖啡馆似乎改变了这种局面。
- A genius for invention, Thomas Edison obtained scores of patents. 托马斯·爱迪生是个发明天才，他获得了许多专利。
