Tel Lab Liu Tai: "Gigabit Optical Network" unlocks the potential of fiber optic infrastructure

author:Optoelectronic communications

From September 23rd to 24th, the Annual Conference of Communication Lines of the China Communications Society (40th) was held in Wujiang, Suzhou, and more than 150 experts and scholars from communication operators, design institutes, scientific research enterprises, testing institutions, communication cable manufacturers and cable material manufacturers gathered in Wujiang. At the meeting, Liu Tai, deputy chief engineer of Thiel System Laboratory, delivered a speech on the theme of "Gigabit Optical Network" To Stimulate the Potential of Optical Fiber Infrastructure".

Tel Lab Liu Tai: "Gigabit Optical Network" unlocks the potential of fiber optic infrastructure

The speech was divided into three parts: "Review - The Development and Status Quo of Optical Fiber Infrastructure in China", "Inheritance and Development - Optical Network from 100 Megabytes to Gigabits" and "Innovation - Infrastructure Evolution in Gigabit Optical Networks".

Liu Tai said that infrastructure is an important cornerstone of economic and social development, is the general material conditions on which society depends for survival and development, "new infrastructure construction" is a new driving force for a new round of endogenous growth of China's economy in the era of digital economy, and optical fiber infrastructure is one of the foundations of "new infrastructure".

In August 2013, the Notice of the State Council on Printing and Distributing the "Broadband China" Strategy and Implementation Plan for the first time explicitly defined broadband networks as a national strategic infrastructure. The development process of China's broadband network is divided into three stages, namely the comprehensive acceleration stage from 2012 to 2013, the promotion and popularization stage from 2014 to 2015, and the optimization and upgrading stage from 2016 to 2020. The Plan expects fixed broadband household penetration to reach 70% by 2020, and some household users in developed cities can reach 1 gigabit per second (Gbps).

Liu Tai introduced that at present, China's information infrastructure has reached the world's leading level: the "Broadband China" strategy has been fully realized, and a new generation of information infrastructure with high speed, mobile, security and ubiquitous has been built. In 2020, China has built the world's largest and inclusive optical fiber network infrastructure for the whole people, and has reached and exceeded the strategic goals of "Broadband China" and "13th Five-Year Plan": "Broadband China" FTTH/O port coverage of 300 million households, the actual number of FTTH/O ports reached 880 million, accounting for 93%; the "13th Five-Year" information planning FTTH/O user proportion target is expected to be more than 80%, and the actual number of users reached 454 million households, accounting for 94%.

Speaking of the upgrade potential, Liu Tai said that the fiber optic infrastructure upgrade space is huge - the optical fiber network itself has a huge potential for bandwidth upgrade, and the construction of gigabit optical network is the first overall upgrade after the popularization of optical fiber infrastructure in China. From the performance point of view, gigabit optical network performance is superior, and 5G complement each other; from the perspective of policy promotion, "double gigabit" goes hand in hand is an important part of the construction of new infrastructure; from the perspective of use demand, information consumption upgrading puts forward practical demand for gigabit optical network; from the perspective of economic benefits, fixed broadband is an important growth point for operators' business and an important way to further implement speed and fee reduction. In the future, operators and local governments are vigorously developing gigabit optical networks - Shanghai has built a "double gigabit broadband city", Nanjing has become the "first double gigabit provincial capital city", and Ningbo has built a "smart double gigabit city"...

Liu Tai said that the "Gigabit Optical Network" will stimulate the potential of optical fiber infrastructure, which he discussed in detail. The development of Gigabit optical network has led to the further improvement of optical access network coverage, and there is still room for development of optical access network coverage. Public building access is the next key direction, and the composite access network that customizes services according to demand will become a trend. Liu Tai said that Gigabit optical networks put forward requirements for access network products, and access network line loss is a key factor restricting the improvement of network performance.

In addition, Liu Tai elaborated on the four points of "maximizing the utility of gigabit optical network in the internal network of users", "scenario-based innovation promotes the development of gigabit optical network applications", "terminal demand improvement drives the upgrading of the whole network", and "digital transformation drives the intelligent improvement of infrastructure".

"In general, from the perspective of upgrading capacity, performance, policy drive, use demand, economic benefits, etc., vigorously developing Gigabit optical networks is in line with the current development situation; the development of Gigabit optical networks puts forward requirements for the further construction and high-quality development of optical fiber infrastructure." Liu Tai finally stressed.
