Green-walled tiles, pavilions and water pavilions, winding paths... This summer, the Merchant Ship Guild Garden at No. 38 Kaikan Street has become a "punching place" for surrounding residents and white-collar workers in commercial buildings to rest and relax because of its original Chinese garden charm and paradise-like courtyard fun.
The Merchant Marine Guild Hall, which was built in the 54th year of the Qing Kangxi Dynasty (1715), is the earliest surviving guild hall in Shanghai. In 2020, the gardens of the Merchant Marine Hall were remodeled, and the green space on the north and south sides of the building was transformed into the current pocket park.
This pocket park built in the financial district is completely open to the public, integrating pure, simple and beautiful Chinese garden style, so that the garden and the architectural style and historical heritage of the guild hall are highly matched and complement each other, and have become a cultural business card with rich historical temperature.
The reporter saw at the scene that the Chinese garden design is the biggest highlight of the pocket park. Chinese elements such as water pavilions, pavilions, lotus ponds, rockeries falling water, and moon cave doors are readily available, each of which reveals a good atmosphere, and integrates a rich spiritual world into the euphemistic twists and turns of the Chinese landscape.
It is reported that in the process of building the park, the original strip stones of the guild hall and the green bricks of the courtyard wall of the ruins have been restored and preserved for the use of floor tiles and wall tiles, retaining the historical background of simplicity and perseverance, and the original traditional Chinese garden charm. In order to reflect the elements of traditional Chinese architectural style, the Qing Dynasty Jinshan Stone with good morphological quality was selected to restore the Lingxing Gate of the Guild Garden, and arranged on the south axis of the ancient building, implying that carp jumped the dragon gate and water transport dredged Shunda.
In addition, the main entrance of the garden is made of Japanese-shaped Luo Han Pine, which reflects the sense of heaviness, which fits the rich sense of history and culture and value of the Merchant Marine Hall, and reflects the architecture, becoming a highlight plant landscape for near-viewing.
