Zhang Wuchang: Many economists are zero, I am a little more than zero

"Yang Tian laughed and went out, my generation is a basil person." Li Bai's poem aptly describes Zhang Wuchang's self-confidence and pride.

Zhang Wuchang is known as "the most famous economist in the Chinese world" and has repeatedly participated in the discussion of China's economic reform, prescribing medicine for the mainland's reform and opening up. Born in Hong Kong, China, he encountered the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in his childhood, took refuge with his mother in Guangxi, and as an adult, he studied in Canada and the United States, obtained a doctorate, taught at the University of Chicago, the University of Washington and other world-famous universities, and served as a professor at the University of Washington. He returned to the University of Hong Kong in the 1980s as Dean and Chair Professor of the School of Economics and Finance at the University of Hong Kong. Zhang Wuchang's main representative works include "The Theory of Sharecroppers", "China's Economic System", "Economic Explanation", "The Myth of the Bee", "The Sayings of the Orange Seller" and so on.

His doctoral dissertation, "The Theory of Sharecroppers", caused a sensation in the Western economics community and later became the pioneering work of modern contract economics.

In 1991, he was invited to the Nobel Prize ceremony as the only economist who did not win the Nobel Prize.

In 2008, his book "China's Economic System" received widespread attention after its publication. In the preface, he proudly wrote: "Looking back on my life, I honestly walked a long and arduous road in academic research. In 1967, he wrote his doctoral dissertation "Tenant Farmer Theory" and in 2008 he wrote "China's Economic System", a distance of forty-one years, both of which can be passed down, and no one in the history of thought can maintain his intelligence for so long. God was extra kind to me and gave me a sense of uniqueness. ”

Fame and controversy often go hand in hand. Not everyone likes Zhang Wuchang, and many fellow economists are critical of his arrogance. Around 2008, Zhang Wuchang's "amazing words" were all the rage, and 11 professors jointly criticized Zhang Wuchang, who wanted to criticize "Zhang Wuchang's heat", "cool down", "put out the fire", and "A Little Cold Thinking about "Zhang Wuchang's Heat"" appeared in the newspaper.

Zhang Wuchang's arrogance and ecstasy made him known as "crazy life" in the economic circles. In fact, the word "crazy life" was self-styled by Zhang Wuchang in an article entitled "Crazy Life Proud Language" in 2000 (later ended with this name).

The Analects have clouds: Seventy and do as you please, do not exceed the rules. Zhang Wuchang, born in 1935, is 83 years old this year, and with the passage of time, he has not become indisputable from the world, and he is still as sharp as ever.

This internationally renowned economist accepted an in-depth interview with the original video program "Cover" of Phoenix Finance in his home.

Zhang Wuchang: Many economists are zero, I am a little more than zero

Talk about yourself: China has today, and my contribution is very small

Zhang Wuchang: China has today, my contribution is very small, I know that many people think that he has a lot of contributions, but I know that I have contributed very little, but it may be more than theirs, they are zero, I am a little more than zero, There are many capable people in China, there are many people who are stronger than me, forty years ago, China was very poor, I came back to help is deserved.

Cover: For China, does it have anything to do with you becoming a master?

Zhang Wuchang: If I hadn't come back to China, the five volumes of my Economic Interpretation wouldn't have been written so well. Colleagues in the West have seen one world, and I have seen two.

Cover: In 2017, you said that after writing the fifth volume of the Economic Interpretation, you will no longer write it.

Zhang Wuchang: Now that it is 2019, it is still changing. Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations was written for twelve years, I wrote it for nineteen years, and mys should be better than the Wealth of Nations—this is my intention, and success or failure is another matter.

Cover: But did you know that people had a mixed reputation for you?

Zhang Wuchang: It doesn't matter, I grew up being a controversial person. I don't care about others, but others like to take care of me, it's a feng shui failure.
