The Qing Dynasty, on the contrary, raised all the princes in Beijing, and they could not leave the capital without the imperial order or edict. Why were the Ming and Qing dynasties so opposite in their attitudes toward princes?
In fact, fundamentally speaking, whether it was the Ming Dynasty letting the Emperor out of the town or the Qing Dynasty imprisoning the clan in the Beijing Division, it was to maintain its own rule, hoping to prevent clan infighting and not let the throne fall into the hands of his brothers, nephews, and uncles. In fact, this is the conclusion reached by the rulers of the Ming and Qing dynasties after experiencing painful lessons.
Since ancient times, the crown prince has been called the national capital, after all, it is the future ruler of the empire. But the emperor often has not only one son, as long as the prince has the theoretical hope of inheriting the throne. In order to maintain the normal functioning of the state and the succession to the throne, China has a strict system of primogeniture, using patriarchal traditions to sort and eliminate the covetousness of the throne among princes. However, even so, in history, there are many things that compete for the position of prince and even emperor.
After the establishment of the Ming Dynasty, in order to allow his country to rule for a long time, especially to prevent the northern Yuan from returning to the Mongolian steppe, Zhu Yuanzhang mostly assigned his sons to the north to guard the frontier for the imperial town. From east to west, there were nine princes, including the Liao King, the Ning King, the Yan King, the Gu King, the Dai King, the Jin King, and the Qin King, of which the Three Princes of Ning, The King of Yan, and the King of Jin were the strongest, and also had the power to control the northern border army. King Ning had "80,000 armored soldiers and 6,000 chariots", and the three guards under duoyan were the most courageous and good at fighting.
However, there are advantages and disadvantages to the king's departure from the town. The advantage is that they can help the central court to resist foreign enemies, and the disadvantage is that these clan kings themselves will covet the imperial power, they have heavy troops, and they have gained prestige and support in non-stop wars, and they have their own armies to fight against the central government. As soon as Zhu Yuanzhang died, Zhu Yunwen's methods of cutting the domain were too fierce, forcing zhu Di, the king of Yan, to rebel. Zhu Di encircled king Ning's border army, and after four years of the Jingnan War, Emperor Jianwen set himself on fire, and Zhu Di became the new emperor of Daming. After Zhu Di became emperor, he immediately issued a strict order on the system of emperors leaving the town: unless there is an edict, they must not enter the dynasty. As a result, the Ming Dynasty's monarchical system was thus fixed, and the princes could only live a luxurious life in the fiefdom, but except for food and clothing, it was like house arrest. In fact, if a prince of the Ming Dynasty dared to sneak into Beijing without the emperor's edict, Jinyi Wei could directly put him in prison and imprison him in heaven.
In the Qing Dynasty, they directly gave up the titles of "King of Qin" and "King of Jin" in the past, that is, they did not want the princes to emulate the emperors who had successfully seized the throne, such as "Li Shimin the Prince of Qin" and "Yang Guang the King of Jin", and used such ceremonial honorific titles as "Prince Li", "Prince Rui", "Prince Yong" and "Prince Bao". At the beginning of the establishment of the Qing Dynasty, the emperors discussed the government, and the princes had great power, first the four great belles jointly ruled, and then the Rui prince Dolgun and the Zheng prince Zilharang regent. In particular, Dorgon eventually became the regent of the emperor's father, so the Qing emperor was very jealous of the prince's power and chose to let the clans stay in the capital division.
Another reason why the Qing Dynasty did not need to choose the zongwang out of town was that the Qing Dynasty itself was ruled by foreign tribes, and its huge numerical disadvantage led to abnormal unity within its ruling group. The basic plan of the Qing Dynasty was the Eight Banners, and there was no need to use the clan arch to defend the imperial family, suppress the power, and monitor the localities. These things that could only be done by blood relatives "their own people" were all done by the Eight Flags.
