author:Jinan Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism

Bai xuelou is the place where Li Panlong, the leader of the "Later Seven Sons" of China's Ming Dynasty literary circle, met, read and collected books. There are three places in Jinan:

One is located in the northeast corner of Wang Sherenzhuang, Baoshan Mountain, which was built after Li Panlong resigned from his official post and returned to his hometown;

One was built in his later years on the south bank of Daming Lake and on the west side of Bixia Palace;

The other is built by later generations on the banks of Baotu Spring.

Li Panlong, the owner of The White Snow Building

His reputation was shocked before his death, and his family was in a state of ruin

In 1570, Li Panlong (字于肓, pincang) of Licheng, Jinan, died. Although Li Panlong was already famous before his death, and he also served as the chief of the Punishment Department, the prefect of Shunde Province, the deputy history of Shaanxi Tixue, and the envoy of Henan, behind him was a scene of desolation.

Wang Yuyang's "Pond Pen Puppet Talk" records:

"Mr. Li Cangming, the most lonely behind him." His favorite Ji Caishi,Wanli 癸卯,more than seventy years old, sold Hu cakes in the western suburbs of Jinan for self-sufficiency. Uncle Ji Mu Kao Gong Zhi, for the fu shi yun: 'White snow buried a generation of wen, Cai Ji dian exhausted the old Luo skirt' Yun Yun. The vicissitudes of the Qing Festival can be known. ”

After the death of her husband, Aiji, a literary giant and a vice-provincial official, was forced to sell her worldly property for her livelihood, and finally fell into the field step of "selling hu cakes for self-sufficiency in the western suburbs of Jinan".

Xing Tong wrote to redeem Bai Xuelou

The famous Ming Dynasty calligrapher and painter Xing Tong

The desolate scene behind Li Panlong attracted the attention of some literati and sages at that time. 30 years after Li Panlong's death, Xing Tong, who was later known as one of the four major scribes of the late Ming Dynasty, wrote a letter to Sun Wenrong, the governor of Shandong at that time, asking the authorities to "slightly damage public funds" and pay for the redemption of Bai xuelou and the juxtaposition of fields for Li Panlong's descendants to live.

Xing Tong, a famous calligrapher and painter of the Ming Dynasty, was a native of Linyi, Shandong. When he was a teenager, the calligraphy of the temple test strategy written by the 24-year-old examiner was superb, which caused the astonishment of the examiner.

At the age of 30, he resigned and returned to his hometown, building his own "Lai Poultry Hall" to receive guests from all over the world. Xing Dong's calligraphy is eclectic, his pen strength is strong, and his smell is ancient. Together with Dong Qichang, Mi Wanzhong and Zhang Ruitu, they are called the "Four Families of the Late Ming Dynasty", and are known as "Northern Xingnan Dong". Throughout his life, Xing Dong often lived in Jinan, and had close contacts with Sun Wenrong, Huang Kezhan and other inspectors of Shandong.

In 1604, the thirty-second year of the Ming Dynasty. The 54-year-old Xing Tong wrote a "Shangfutai Sun Wenrong" to Sun Wenrong, the governor of Shandong Province, in which he wrote:

"Eavesdropping on mr. Li Cangming under the calendar, climbing the dragon and bao zhen, taking the ancestors, casting the ancient and the present, wei as a daibao, and the people of the sea are not zongzong." Today, the five-acre mansion is no longer the old wenjing, and the name of Meng Ting is empty in Xiangyang. The door is sparse, the cloud is still only, dong every inquirer, all the clouds Li Ju lost, there are sons and heirs, left a bad grandson, and no mother, only to leave the swaddling, sending life to Wu Miao, is for the colt woman, living in the poor alley, entrusting the duckweed. And there is no coarse food for the day, and after years of pouring less pulp juice, the Baoshan loess is red, and the people are laughing. The white clouds of Quehu Lake, turning into a rainbow and circling the tomb. Its responsibility today lies with the Ming Gong, but Dong implies that he wants to confess.

...... Fu Xuan Ming wrote down the division, slightly damaged the public funds, in order to buy a number of rafters of our house, a small fu white snow of the old residence. The moon or give rice a stone, the age cloth a number of boils, so as to grow strong hair, stretching back kun, a line of dragons, is really like the blessing of heaven, Sven a vein, its domain against the heart. It is to advocate righteousness at the end of the stage and strive for this forever. ......”

The gist of this letter is that after Li Panlong's death, his son Li Ju fell ill and died, and soon after, Li Ju's son also died, and Li Panlong's descendants only had a grandson who had just no milk, and lived in a poor alley with Li Panlong's wife and daughter-in-law, and there was a lack of food and drink, which made people laugh. He requested Inspector Sun Wenrong to slightly damage the public funds, redeem and restore the former residence of Li Panlong Baixuelou at the foot of Baoshan Mountain in Licheng, and regularly supply some grain every month and some cloth every year to extend the incense of the Li family and inherit the cultural context of Li Panlong.

Xing Dong requested the redemption of Bai Xuelou

There are many records in the history books

Li Weizhen, a national historian of the Ming Hanlin Academy, said in the "Epitaph of Mr. Xing Ziyan" that Xing Dong was "a person who is Mr. Li Yulin, who is sluggish, and said that among his grandsons, he bought the old Baixue Building to live in and set up a field." ”

Huang Keyi, the governor of Shandong who ruled Shandong for 15 years, wrote in the "Biography of Mr. Xing Ziyuan":

"Xing Dong also worked with dangDaoshu to beg for redemption of Bai Xuelou, and after Li Yu was standing, his high friendship could really be vulgar and agitated."

Feng Shike, one of the literary "Five Sons of Zhongxing", also recorded: "Li Yu was depressed after the scales, (Xing Tong) asked his grandson Zhongcheng Wenrong to buy the old Baixue Building to live in, and put tian Zhanzhi in it." ”

Xing Tong's proposal was soon supported by Inspector Sun, who ordered Chen Caiju of Licheng County, who had just arrived for a month at the time, to establish Li Panlong's heir, and to purchase good land and build houses for Li Panlong's descendants.

Afterwards, Xing Tong also wrote a special article entitled "Licheng Chen Lingjun Established an Heir to Li Yulin", which was recorded in this regard. Through Xing Tong's records, it can be seen that this time the redemption and reconstruction of the former residence of Baixuelou in Baoshan Was "for the purchase of a hundred acres of property houses in Sendai, also known as the billing of one hundred and eighty thousand; and for the sake of the poor alleys of The Old House, it is Mao Naiyuan, not afraid of fingers, and the billing is thirty and four thousand", so that Li Panlong's descendants "have eight hungry businesses, and the three widows also have a home."

The redemption of the Baixue Building cost a total of 210,000, which was undoubtedly a huge amount of money at the time. Xing Tong's letter is really worth ten thousand gold, he did not bear the burden of saving Li Panlong's descendants, but also made the celebrities of the World people raise their eyebrows.

The Baixue Building that Xing Dong bought was the place where Bao Shan, the king of Licheng, was located. Li Panlong once wrote in a preface to a poem:

"(Bai xue) lou is in the east of Jinan County, thirty miles east of Xu Baocheng, looking at the Tailu In front, northwest of Hua bu zhu mountains, large and small Qing River intersect below. Overlooking the wilderness of the Changbai Pingling Tomb on the left, the sea and air, every time you climb, you will be victorious. ”

(Hidden in the midst of thousands of trees, this building is deep and beautiful, then called "Baoshan White Snow", one of the sixteen scenes in the calendar.) Today, the buildings are long gone, but the mountain views are still beautiful. --Editor)

In his later years, Li Panlong built another White Snow Tower near the Bixia Palace on the north side of Baihuazhou in Daming Lake, and Li Panlong's friend Xu Bangcai called it "The Lake Building" in the poem. More than forty years after Li Panlong's death, Wang Xiangchun, another great poet from the Ming Dynasty from Shandong, once paid a high price to live in the "Lake Building" that had withered away, and he couldn't help but sigh:

"Mr. Yu Scale's city library is also known as Bai Xue, in the west of Bixia Palace, on the Hundred Flowers Island. The sun is full of decay, the sun is shining, the rain is leaking, and the five owners are not sold. Yu is a sage, so the times are straight to the market, and its plaque is still unbearable. Nanshan handed over the green, near Nagisa Feixiang, hated not to be rewarded by the scales, afraid of the house shame, and did the north mountain to move. ”

And wrote a poem "To Live in the Old House by the Scale Lake", the poem Yun:

"The grass hall is slightly similar to the raccoon flower house, and the situation is Mr. Zeyu." No more than Xie Dun's surname, but it must be more full of lou books. ”

During the Wanli Dynasty, probably under the influence of Xing Tong's letter to Sun Wenrong, Ye Mengxiong, the right-hand man of Shandong who had always admired Li Panlong's learning, funded the construction of a third Baixue Building on the banks of Baotu Spring.

Li Panlong's ninth grandson Li Xianfang said in his "Record of rebuilding the White Snow Building":

"The Baixue Building was originally built in Wangshezhuang in the east of the city, and then built on the side of the Bixia Palace on the lake, and the rear is poured down, and the Ming Wanli Dynasty Ye Gongmeng Bear Supplement was built on the Baotu Spring."

After learning that Ye Mengxiong built the Baotu Spring White Snow Building, Xing Tong could not contain his excitement and wrote two poems: "There is a White Snow Building In the Title of Baotu Spring Map":

The first one

The Slovaks are invisible, and the little builder petSven.

The snow shines on the moon, and the clouds clear the house.

The waterfall is sharp and the jade is standing, and the stones are turned over.

I'm also a sergeant in the county, and I want to be empty.

Second song

Ten years have passed through this, and it is still exciting.

The horse's hooves pierced into the water, and the wine forced Lin Xiang.

BiYang Nanshan Sunset, Qing invited The North Nagisa Liang.

Drawing can be provincial, one is Togawa Hikaru.

Baotu Spring BaixueLou, which later collapsed for a long time, was rebuilt in the eleventh year of Qing Shunzhi (1654) by Zhang Jinyan, then the envoy of Shandong Province.

In 1960 the building was demolished due to disrepair. It was rebuilt on the original site in October 1995 and completed in June 1996, which is today's Baixue Building.
