Lu Xun and seal engraving

author:Talk about the art

Mr. Lu Xun is one of my favorite writers, not one.

And Mr. Lu Xun also likes seal engraving, it just so happens that I also have this hobby, so when reading Mr. Lu Xun's literary works, I seem to feel closer to Mr. Lu Xun, in fact, this is just a psychological effect. Even if I love seal engraving, I am still far away from Mr. Lu Xun.

(Lu Xun)

Mr. Lu Xun's family is a famous Wang, Grandpa Zhou Fuqing is a hanlin, the family also has contacts with many famous calligraphers and painters, not to mention, Mr. Lu Xun's hometown is Shaoxing, this place is the hometown of the famous seal engraver, painter, calligrapher Zhao Zhiqian, according to the data, Lu Xun's grandfather was arrested and imprisoned by the imperial government for bribery, Lu Xun went to his uncle's house in order to hide from trouble, and the painting hanging on the middle hall of the family was Zhao Zhiqian's masterpiece.

Another time, the Zhou family went to the grave, the etiquette of going to the grave was very solemn, and to go farther away, you need to take a boat to rush over, on the boat where the grave went, Lu Xun's twenty-eight father-in-law took out the knife and stone he carried with him and carved two seals for Lu Xun, one side was "only plum blossoms are confidants", and the other side was "Green Fir Wild House" (these two seals are said to be engraved by Lu Xun for his favorite piano cousin, and the piano cousin is often a green coat, and the most like plum blossoms. I don't know if it's true, I don't know if it's true, if it's not, I'm blind. This twenty-eight duke is called Zhou Qinhou, can carry seal carving knives, stone materials, not a general hobby seal carving, can complete a Zhu and a white two-sided seal in a short period of time, no matter what the level of these two parties "urgent chapter", the impact on the teenage Lu Xun is profound, not to mention that Lu Xun at that time loved painting, and he could not worry about these things of the literati.

(Only plum blossoms are confidants)

Of course, Lu Xun has an appreciation, so although this square seal has been carried around for life, he rarely sees him stamped on his own works, probably because it has different feelings (the first love may not be certain!). According to the data, the reason why Lu Xun has been treasured this seal is because he has placed a nostalgia for his uncle, which I think is blind).

Moreover, after Lu Xun finished his studies in Nanjing, he crossed the same ship to Japan to study, and there was a seal carving master named Chen Hengke (that is, the seal carving master Chen Shizeng), which is the one in the following picture:

(Chen Shizeng)

Lu Xun and Chen Shi were classmates of Nanjing Mining Road Academy and Japan Hongwen Academy, and later worked together in the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China, with similar interests and unusual relationships. Chen engraved and printed many pieces for Lu Xun in his lifetime, such as "Huiji Zhou Collection", "Huiji ZhouShi", "Qiantang", etc. (see the picture below), most of which are good structures and the level is not low.

(Chen Shi once made part of the seal for Lu Xun)

Of course, there is also the following square wood seal, which is a wooden seal made for Lu Xun's collection of gold stones, because Chen Shi once felt that he was not good at wood printing, and Lu Xun was too hard to destroy the collection, and asked to be carved into a wood seal, so he was written by Chen Shi zeng and found Zhang Fancheng, a famous engraver in the Glass Factory at that time:

(Chen Shi once wrote, Zhang Fancheng carved a wooden seal)

"Lu Xun's Diary" also recorded on April 11, 1918: "In the afternoon, Master Chen once went to the Liuli Factory (Liuli Factory) tonggutang, carved the seal on behalf of Ji City, and purchased five wooden seals by himself. According to the investigation, these five seals are: "Sui Xi", "Good", "False", "Translation", and "Finish", all of which are used for the appreciation of Lu Xun's school monument. Among them, the "Suixi" seal is also wooden, italic, simple and reckless, with a colorful weather, and a very golden stone atmosphere:

(Suixi)

Of course, Lu Xun's most commonly used printing is customized in Xiling Printing Agency when he lived in Shanghai, the diary records that the flower "Spring Four Yuan Five Corners", spend money to find Xiling customization, and a flower is a few oceans, Lu Xun is by no means a general favorite for seal carving. Two party seals, one is wu deguang (the son of Wu Yin, the founder of Xiling Printing Society), Hanbai printing style, the printing text "Lu Xun", upright and generous, simple and strong, is Lu Xun's most commonly used printing, early books, this party seal often appears on copyright pages for printing:

On the other side, tao Shoubo (this one is also powerful, is a disciple of Zhao Shuru, together with Chen Julai, Fang Jiekan, and Ye Luyuan, and is called "Zhao Men Sijie". The Zhu Wen Seal, the indian "Luo Wen", the wide-edged fine Zhu Gu Seal style Zhu Wen Yin is vast and simple, dense and elegant, enough to be used with the previous party:

(Lowan)

But Lu Xun never seems to like to print the two sides on the same work or manuscript, and most of his calligraphy works do not use any angle chapters and first chapters, so many people say that Lu Xun does not understand calligraphy and does not understand seal engraving, which is really a big mistake.

In fact, Lu Xun had a relatively long period of studying the stele topography stone brick carvings, this period is the period when Yuan Shikai ruled strictly, sprinkled with detectives, informants, and slightly suspicious young people, they were arrested, but they did not catch people with special hobbies, such as those who gambled and stored concubines, such as playing with antique calligraphy and paintings, Lu Xun had no way, he often collected stone carvings, copied ancient stele, school ancient books, looked at the prints, so that he lived a life, plus Lu Xun's days were not yet Xu Guangping, and his wife Zhu An, designated by his mother, was not a wife at all. Mental and physical at the same time depressed, very lonely, January 22, 1917 diary, Lu Xun wrote: "The old calendar Chinese New Year's Eve also, sitting alone at night on the tablet, there is no sense of changing the age. "Chinese New Year's Eve night, I still sit alone on the monument, and other days can be imagined."

Of course, loneliness generally makes people. It is precisely for this reason that Lu Xun has a fairly high insight into gold stones, woodcuts, steles, seal carvings and other studies. When Du Zeqing, a Shaoxing indian, compiled his seal engraving work into the "Moth Seal" and asked the Zhou brothers for a preface, Zhou Zuoren felt that he was not as familiar with this way as his eldest brother, so he only wrote a draft and sent it to Lu Xun to revise and polish. Lu Xun's final draft is only a short four hundred words, but the origin of the seal, the rise and fall of the dynasties, one by one, at the end of the article, do not forget to praise the author's "heart to shoot, and chase the Han system, gods and ancient meetings, cover the authentic art of pure art", which shows Mr. Lu Xun's insight into seal engraving.

When I went to visit the "Tiger Tail" of Lu Xun's former residence in Santiao, West of Fucheng Gate, Beijing, I saw a painting on the wall behind Lu Xun's chair that lu Xun collected "Leaving the Troubles" and a picture of the words "Look forward to the song and don't force it, fear the first sound of the pelicans", which of course means to cherish time, but the person who wrote this calligraphy is Qiao Dazhuang, who is the successor of the famous seal engraver Huang Shilingmen Sect, and Qi Baishi is called "Southern Qiao Beiqi".

In his later years, Lu Xun often used two slightly smaller seals, one white and one Zhu, namely "Lu Xun" and "Brigade Falcon". These two sides are the works of Liu Shudu, a female disciple of Qi Baishi, full of the characteristics of qi pai's sword technique, but not as old and bold as Qi Baishi, and also slightly permeated with the unique sword technique atmosphere of women:

In 1933 (only three years after Lu Xun's death in 1936), Lu Xun wrote to Zheng Zhenduo: "Miss Liu is engraved by miss Yintuo, which is good enough." The "Miss Liu" in the letter refers to Liu Shudu, who has engraved these two seals. Liu Shudu famous teacher Yi, in 1925 was admitted to the Chinese Department of Beijing Normal University, after class in Qi Baishi under the door to learn art, Qi Baishi praised her, it is rumored that these two seals once got Qi Baishi there, Qi Baishi also pointed out the "brigade" word in the "brigade falcon" side, moved the carving knife, as for how to point, it is unknown.

Lu Xun was ill in his later years and could not reply to anyone's letters, so he let people engrave a "sick" seal, and whenever a letter came, he stamped such a seal on the receipt, and the sender looked at it and understood the reason, that is, he was no longer in a hurry to wait for a reply, which was also Lu Xun's full practicality of the seal.

Of course, Lu Xun himself also engraved, which is estimated to start from the famous "early" character engraved on Lu Xun's desk in the Sanwei Bookstore, because the table in the bookstore was brought by Lu Xun himself from his home (this is a custom, or a rule), don't blame him for destroying public property:

(I took the "early" engraved by Lu Xun on the wooden table of the Sanwei Book House)

Of course, this is not a work, and it is rumored that the "Rong Ma Shusheng" at the beginning of this article and the other two parties "Article Mistook Me" and "Jia Jiansheng" were self-carved by Lu Xun, and it is also said that Lu Xun found the Twenty-Eight Gonggong carvings, which is uncertain, because I have not seen the actual object, and can only be examined. Among the existing Lu Xun's posthumous seals, only one side of the white cursive "Xun" character is engraved by Lu Xun, and when Xu Guangping donated it to the Lu Xun Museum in Beijing that year, he said that the seal was the only lu Xun self-engraved seal, so it was precious.

In fact, we do not need to find additional evidence to prove the level of Lu Xun's seal engraving, just look at the emblem of Peking University, it is Mr. Lu Xun designed on the basis of traditional Chinese wadang, the word "Peking University" is like a person carrying two people, constituting the image of "three people becoming a crowd", giving people the imagination that "Peking University people shoulder the heavy responsibility of opening up the people's wisdom", and the word "Peking University" also has the symbolic meaning of "backbone":

According to the information, Mr. Lu Xun has a total of fifty-six posthumous seals, including fifty square seals and six seals without physical objects. These prints are mostly name and pen name seals, book appreciation chapters, and idle chapters. Although there are only a few dozen seals, but the number of intersecting characters, the events done, the fate of a generation of literary heroes Lu Xun and seal carvings can be described as deep, so we can roughly imagine: literature and art are always connected.
