Huang Zi, a native of Chuansha, Shanghai, was born in 1904.

In 1916, Huang Zi was admitted to Tsinghua School and began to systematically contact Western music, playing clarinets in the Boy Scout orchestra and tenor parts in the choir. After graduating from Tsinghua University in 1924, Huang Zi studied at Oberlin College and Yale University in the United States. In 1930, he was hired as a composition professor and director of the National Conservatory of Music (the predecessor of Shangyin), and trained musicians represented by the "four disciples" of He Luting, Jiang Dingxian, Chen Tianhe and Liu Xue'an.

In the face of the situation of old music in modern China and the decline of new music, Huang Zi composed, taught, wrote books, wrote teaching materials, and formed an orchestra, single-handedly supporting half of China's modern music.

Huang Zi was the creator of China's first symphonic music and brought the oratorio to China for the first time, and his "Long Hate Song", which came out in 1932, was the first oratorio in the history of Chinese music and the only large-scale vocal work created by Huang Zi.

The lyrics of the work were adapted by Wei Hanzhang, a Chinese language teacher at the National Conservatory of Music, with reference to the Qing legend "Hall of Eternal Life" and Bai Juyi's narrative poem "Long Hate Song", a total of ten movements, all of which chose Bai Juyi's verses as the title of the movement. This work was not written by Huang since his death, and many years later, his student Lin Shengxi helped to complete it.

"This is a successful attempt by Huang Zi to use Western creative techniques to nationalize music, which has a good combination and application of language, melody, rhythm, etc., and better blends traditional poetry with ancient and new tunes, but from the perspective of dissemination influence, the important historical value of this work has not been properly presented." The main creative team said.

In order to carry forward the "cultural consciousness" of Huang Zi and other masters and sages, with the strong support of Huang Ziyin and Lin Xianyun, the family members of Huang Ziyin and Lin Shengyi, the Shangyin School History Museum cooperated with the Shangyin Digital Media Art College to create a multimedia music theater "Long Hate Song", which uses new media art means and rich musical instruments, supplemented by narrative music guides, to present this work in a diversified way.

From the source, production to performance, this is a full-fledged "upper tone manufacturing". Dai Xiaorong, vice dean of Shangyin Digital Media Art College, served as the artistic director and led the team to design multimedia visual effects, young composer David Yi was responsible for music creation, young director Tao Sijie was responsible for stage scheduling and guiding student performances, and many undergraduate and master students from the Shangyin Vocal Song Department, orchestra department and graduate school participated.

Last year, "Long Hate Song" was first unveiled in the "Tribute to the Master - Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Death of Mr. Huang Zi" series of academic activities, which was exhibited at Tsinghua University.

After the new upgrade, this year, "Long Hate Song" debuted at the Shanghai International Arts Festival Youth Creation Week, most of the audience was young people, a drama student said, "I have always felt that traditional poetry should be expressed in folk music, "Long Hate Song" refreshed my cognition, but also show Mr. Huang Zi's innovative spirit." ”
