Raphael Sanzio's Self-Portrait

1506

Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy

In 1504, while Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci were still fighting each other in Florence, a young painter was coming from the small town of Urbino in the Umbrian region, raphael Sanchio. At the age of 11, he was sent to his teacher Perugino to learn painting. With both the guidance of famous teachers and the talent of others, Raphael's progress can be said to be rapid.

Perugino, "Christ Gives the Key to Peter"

1481-82

Sistine Chapel in the Vatican

The compositional style, environment and character configuration of this work are all imitations of the teacher Perukino's painting "Christ Gives the Key to the Gate of Heaven to Peter", and the character modeling, in addition to the teacher's quiet and elegant style characteristics, also began to reveal its own unique feminine style. Moreover, the vivid and humane performance of the character relationship can be said to have completely surpassed the teacher's version.

The painting is arranged in a symmetrical manner, with a polygonal baptistery standing on top of the sky in the background. The picture makes extensive use of horizontal lines, vertical lines and semicircular curves, resulting in a sense of softness, simplicity and clarity, and harmony of overall changes. Raphael cleverly used perspective to make the space appear more profound. In the painting, both men and women, the image is very handsome. The variety of curves, the posture of the characters, and the changes in the folds of clothes all have a sense of elegance and softness. It can be said that Raphael himself was very satisfied with this work and signed his name on it for the first time.

The painting is now in the collection of the Brera Gallery in Milan, Italy.

02 Our Lady of the Goldfinch

Painted in 1506

Raphael is 30 years younger than Da Vinci, and although the two can be said to be "same door" relationship, they have not met before. As a big fan of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael finally had the opportunity to consult and learn from his idols in person after coming to Florence. Facts have also proved that Raphael's harvest in Leonardo da Vinci's workshop has made a qualitative leap in his artistic creation.

Raphael Sanzio, Our Lady of the Goldfinch

Let's take a look at one of Raphael's famous works in 1506, at the age of 23, "Our Lady of the Goldfinch.".

A total of 3 figures are depicted on this image of the Virgin, the Virgin, Jesus and John. But the characters do not have any religious labels, and both the Holy Child and John are painted as young children. The young Virgin is like a folk mother with two children. The composition takes a pyramidal approach, which is the first of leonardo da Vinci and has strong stability. The color selection on the painting is more strict, the red top and blue-purple cloak of the Virgin, coupled with the warm skin of the two children, constitute a stable picture, reflecting Raphael's perfect control of color.

The Virgin and the Son painted by Raphael in this period are all set in landscapes, the number of characters is mostly the same, and they have a common theme of maternal love. This painting is an artistic expression of his mature period after coming to Florence. However, some of the imitative brushwork here is still not hidden, probably because Raphael admired Leonardo da Vinci too much.

The work is currently in the collection of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.
