In addition to the fact that both Tianshi Dao and Quanzhen Dao are based on the basic teachings of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching, the main difference between the two schools is that Tianshi Dao Daoists can marry and have children, and each generation of Tianshi is established as if it were the succession of the imperial family, and the eldest son of the previous generation of Tianshi inherits the tianshi throne, and each generation of tianshi is enthroned by the emperor of the current dynasty. Quanzhen Dao, on the other hand, advocated Qing cultivation, and the establishment of each generation of leaders was designated by the previous generation of leaders, neither heirs nor emperors.
The founder of Tianshi Dao was Zhang Daoling (34-156 AD). Zhang Daoling was originally named Zhang Ling (張陵), also spelled Fu Han , the ninth grandson of Zhang Liang , the Marquis of Hanliu , and was called Zhang Daoling after receiving the Tao.

In the second year of the Reign of Emperor Yongping of The Han Dynasty (59 AD), the twenty-five-year-old Zhang Ling, with his moral essays, paid homage to the order of Jiangzhou (present-day Chongqing) in Ba County. He is in the government, but he has no intention of pursuing a career. During this period, he was able to practice the Book of Aikido, so he hung a crown and lived in seclusion in the Northern Mountains (northeast of present-day Luoyang City), determined to cultivate the Tao. After three years of cultivation, in order to find the treasure land of cultivation, he took his disciple Wang Chang alone and traveled all over the world. After arriving at Poyang Lake, it enters Guixi Yunjin Mountain and is regarded as a blessed place for monasticism. Set up an altar of Immortal Water Rock and cultivate the Nine Heavens Divine Dan. Dancheng, Dragon tiger present. He renamed Yunjin Mountain to Dragon Tiger Mountain. At that time, Zhang Ling was more than sixty years old, but his appearance still looked like a person in his thirties. After that, he also visited the "Secret Text of the Divine Tiger", "Three Emperors Neiwen", "Yellow Emperor Jiuding DanShu", and "Taiqing Danshu". At this point, the monastic path has been accomplished.
Just as Zhang Daoling and Wang Chang were constantly improving the Taoist system and Taoist theory in the Longhushan area, a plague occurred in Sichuan. After hearing the news, Zhang Daoling, who used medical magic to save sentient beings, took the divine elixir and famous herbs refined at Longhu Mountain and hurried to Sichuan to live in Qingcheng Mountain, while treating the people's diseases while continuing to develop Taoism.
By the time of Emperor Shun of Han (123 AD), Zhang Daoling had written twenty-four Taoist books by himself, and he had obtained secret books such as "Taishang Laojun Zhengyi Mengwei Secret Seal" and "Three Qing Zhongjing Classics". Therefore, he took Lao Tzu as his ancestor, honored him as Taishang Laojun, and took the Tao Te Ching as the basic teaching, and officially founded the Zhengyi Mengwei Dao (known as "Wudou Rice Dao" outside the religion), and the congregation regarded him as the Heavenly Master, and later generations called it the Heavenly Master Dao or Zhengyi.
After that, Zhang Daoling's descendants inherited the Heavenly Master Dao Fa. To this day, there are statues of Zhang Tianshi in Longhu Mountain in Jiangxi and Qingcheng Mountain in Sichuan for people to worship. time.
