15,000 light barbed catfish are released back into nature

On October 27, the reporter witnessed the release of 15,000 light barbed catfish at the 2016 Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Science Popularization Month and the Sixth Phase of Natural Care , Guangzhou Liuxi River Light Barbed Catfish Breeding and Stocking Activity held in the Liuxi River Light Barbed Catfish National Aquatic Germplasm Resources Conservation Area. With the release of the staff, the light barbed catfish swims into the wider waters and returns to nature.

The wild resources of the light barbed catfish are in urgent need of restoration

Light barbed catfish, commonly known as bonito, cyprinids, carps, subfamily catfish, barbed catfish genus, is a traditional famous economic fish of Liuxi River, the meat is tender, delicious taste, with high nutritional and medicinal value. In recent years, many universities and scientific research institutions have conducted resource surveys, and it is difficult to catch wild broodstock. According to local villagers, the sight of light barbed catfish migrating in groups more than a decade ago has disappeared, and very few light barbed catfish can be captured. According to the survey conclusions of the Guangzhou Marine and Fishery Nature Reserve Management Station in 2015, the resources of light barbed catfish in the LiuxiHe Nature Reserve still need to be restored.

Wang Aijun, an engineer at Guangzhou Youcheng Aquaculture Co., Ltd., said that the light barbed catfish has a history of more than 100 years, and due to overfishing and vicious fishing in the 1970s and 1980s, the fish is on the verge of extinction. The economic value of the light barbed catfish is high, and in the 1980s, a fish could be exchanged for five catties of pork.

Three years of research culminated in the successful fertilization of light barbed catfish

In order to restore the population of light barbed catfish and maintain its original ecological characteristics, it is one of the most effective ways to use the artificially bred seedlings of the native broodstock caught in nature and stocked into the waters of the reserve.

Wang Aijun said that the company has begun to collect parents from the banks of the Liuxi River 3 years ago, and through inducing labor, artificial insemination and other means, it has finally successfully bred light barbed catfish. In the process of conception, the biggest problem he encountered was that the prenatal technical treatment of the broodstock after taking it back was different from other fish, and it took three years of research to finally break through.

Liu Hansheng, director of the Guangzhou Marine and Fishery Nature Reserve Management Station, said: "The species restored are native species. "By collecting the parents of the Stream Stream, laying eggs and hatching and then releasing them, the purpose of protecting the native species of light barbed catfish can be achieved." He also said that the light barbed catfish in the stream is not the same as the light barbed catfish in the field. Existing studies have shown that the light barbed catfish in The Stream river has fewer lateral scales than other light barbed catfish, and this trait has been basically confirmed.
