Two generations of inheritance have achieved a dream-building life

Seventy years ago, a letter sent from Beijing to the United States read: "Beijing is in ruins and is about to carry out urban planning work, and I hope you will come back soon." The letter from his mentor Liang Sicheng made him feel excited. In the end, he broke through many obstacles, took a detour to return to China, and threw himself into the construction and education of New China. He is Wu Liangyong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. More than ten years ago, he participated in the design of the office building of the headquarters of the British Ministry of the Interior, and won the title of "British Royal Chartered Architect", returned to his hometown with profound professional accumulation and devoted himself to the urban construction of Beijing. He is Wu Chen, chief architect of Beijing Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd., the son of Wu Liangyong. Father and son, home and country, two generations, what has changed is the times and circumstances, and what has not changed is their pure heart for the motherland and the people and the professional ideal.

Speaking of his decision to return to China, Wu Chen said that "being able to make due contributions to the city of Beijing is the most important and correct decision in his life." Beijing is wu chen's hometown, he was born and raised in this city, has a unique feeling for Beijing. Although Wu Chen has spent more than ten years abroad since he went to London for further study in 1995, he has always been hard to forget the bricks and tiles of his hometown. Adding color to the Winter Olympics opens a new chapter in the redevelopment of the city

In 2011, Wu Chen began to plan and design the Beijing Fang project. However, the geographical location of Beijing Fang is important and sensitive, and how to improve people's livelihood on the basis of retaining the original urban style, and integrate the bustling commercial area with buildings of various periods has become a problem that plagues Wu Chen. At the right time, the upgrading and transformation policy of the old city proposed by the Beijing Municipal Government provided Wu Chen with an opportunity to realize Beijing's feelings. In the end, combined with the suggestions of the old experts on the "harmony but difference" design principle, under the auspices of Wu Chen, he adopted the cluster design method and cooperated with several architects to integrate Western elements into Eastern architecture, while also exploring new paths for the protection of the old city of Beijing. Nowadays, Dashilar Beijing Fang, a "Chinese-style living experience area" that integrates Chinese and Western architectural styles, has become a tourist punch card place and is known as a representative work of "Chinese-style neighborhood".

Shougang's overall urban design work was led by Wu Chen, as the chief architect of the project, as early as 2009. As a century-old steel enterprise, Shougang records history with every equipment and each object has its own story. In Wu Chen's heart, it is his mission to give new functions to old buildings and revitalize old factories, and he is determined to build Shougang into a model for the redevelopment of world cities. Now, after ten years of renovation, the first phase of Shougang Park has begun to serve the 2022 Winter Olympics. Here, not only can you see many Olympic elements, but also old facilities that have been given new functions, such as offices, cafes, hotels, etc. that have been renovated from old factories. In the program, in the face of the problem of retaining old equipment in the transformation of the second phase of Shougang, Wu Chen also consulted Shan Jixiang, former director of the Palace Museum. Dean Shan is the dean of wu chen's school of architecture at Tsinghua University, and he has given wu chen many valuable suggestions for the transformation and design of the old factory area of Shougang. Wu Chen said that the area east of the Shougang Industrial Heritage Park that he is currently designing will be built into a high-end industrial service area integrating high-end digital intelligence, industrial culture and creativity, scientific and technological innovation, and supporting facilities for the Winter Olympics in the future.
