Kong Xiangxi (孔祥熙), courtesy name Yongzhi (庸之), was a native of Taigu County, Shanxi Province.
Kong Xiangxi was a representative of the Kong family of the four major families during the Republic of China period, and was in charge of the finances of the National Government for a long time. In the late period of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Kong Xiangxi was caught in the whale swallowing a huge amount of U.S. dollar public debt scandal, and in May 1945, he had to "resign" as vice president of the Executive Yuan, and in July he resigned as president of the central bank.
In 1946, Kong Xiangxi carefully cleaned up his property in Shanghai, transferring as much property as possible to Hong Kong and abroad.
In the summer of 1947, Kong Xiangxi returned to his hometown of Taigu, Shanxi, with the intention of saying goodbye to his family and relatives, after which he first asked Song Qiling to go to the United States, and after doing all the aftermath work, he came to Shanghai in the autumn of that year. A few days later, Kong Xiangxi sent a telegram to Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang Central Committee, and on the pretext of "suddenly receiving a call from his family from the United States, saying that his wife was suffering from a vicious disease and that the situation was serious," he flew to the United States without waiting for Chiang Kai-shek's approval.
In 1950, Chiang Kai-shek's "Presidential Office", which had defeated Taiwan, hired him as a "senior official", although this was only a nominal title, not a real post, but from this point alone, it can be seen that Chiang Kai-shek can be said to have given Kong Xiangxi enough face. Kong Xiangxi ignored it.
In October 1952, the Kuomintang held the "Seventh National Congress" in Taiwan, and the meeting passed the "Rectification Case" of the Sixth Central Committee Members, which stipulated that after this meeting, the members of the Central Committee should hold a registration of the intention of party members, "detailed methods, strict assessment, and separate collection." Kong Xiangxi still ignored it. The following year, Chiang Kai-shek approved the expulsion of the Kuomintang party, and Kong Xiangxi ranked first.
Although Kong Xiangxi served in the National Government, he had to admit that Kong Xiangxi was first and foremost a businessman who sought advantage and avoided harm. Whether it was the face given by Chiang Kai-shek or the punishment given, Kong Xiangxi ignored it, which did not mean that he was determined to settle in the United States, but that he was looking for the right opportunity.
In 1954, Chiang Kai-shek convened the second so-called "National Convention" in Taiwan. Kong Xiangxi had a sudden idea and returned to Taiwan to run for "vice president." For the sake of prudence, Wei Daoming, who had served as chairman of Taiwan Province, was sent to Taipei to investigate the situation first.
It can be said that at this time and at another time, Chiang Kai-shek was no longer interested in Kong Xiangxi.
In order to rebuild the Chiang dynasty in Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek put his hopes on the crown prince Chiang Ching-kuo, and he took a series of measures to transform the Kuomintang, re-make personnel arrangements, reuse Chen Cheng and others, and let them assist Chiang Ching-kuo.
This pattern gradually formed, and it was impossible for Kong Xiangxi to insert a foot. As soon as Wei Daoming arrived in Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek instructed Chen Cheng and Chiang Ching-kuo to block Kong Xiangxi's representatives back. Therefore, Chen Cheng and Jiang Chingguo ordered a newspaper to publish an article, scolding the giants, and the spearhead was directed at Kong Xiangxi, and even Wei Daoming was scolded as a lackey of the giants. Wei Daoming had no choice but to return to the United States to return to Kong for his life.
At this point, Kong Xiangxi's dream of returning to Taiwan for the first time and making a comeback was completely shattered!
