Which of the four masterpieces has been remade the most, "Journey to the West" deserves it. Director Yang Jie's 86 version of Journey to the West is an eternal classic, and by the time Yang Jie died in 2017, this TV series had been replayed more than 3,000 times, leaving behind the common good memories of generations.
Subsequently, in 1996, the Hong Kong version of "Journey to the West" starring Zhang Weijian began to be broadcast. In 2010, the Zhejiang version of "Journey to the West", directed by Cheng Lidong, began to be broadcast on David TV. Only a year later, the new "Journey to the West", directed by Zhang Jizhong and claimed to be the most in line with the original work, began to appear in front of the audience and friends.
"Journey to the West" has been remade into movies more times, starring Stephen Chow's "Journey to the West", Aaron Kwok's "Three Dozen White Bone Essences", as well as "The Legend of Wukong", "The Return of the Great Sage", "Daughter Country" and so on, which are simply innumerable.
The reason why "Journey to the West" is so popular with everyone, in addition to the fantastic mythological imagination of Journey to the West, witty and humorous dialogue and fighting, the philosophy of life implied by it is also worth everyone's deep consideration.
Although "Journey to the West" is constantly being adapted to the screen, and although the original work of "Journey to the West" is read over and over again, it has always been a topic of debate about who is the embodiment of Sun Wukong's master, Bodhi Grandmaster.
In the tenth year of Fang Inch Mountain, Sun Wukong was overwhelmed after the initial formation of his divine powers, and he forgot his original intention and turned into a pine tree, which caused a up and down noise in the Three Star Cave. The Bodhi Ancestor who heard the news was furious, and he not only reprimanded Sun Wukong on the spot, but also threw him out of the Square Inch Mountain.
For Sun Wukong, he was just showing off his magic power and changing a pine tree, so why was Master angry and fussy? For Bodhi Grandmaster, who retired to the mountains and forests and did not ask about the world, he paid great attention to the character of his disciples, and Sun Wukong, who had forgotten his original intention, could no longer stay in The Fangqi Mountain.
However, the cleverness of Journey to the West lies in the fact that when Sun Wukong left Fang Inch Mountain, whether he made a big fuss in the Heavenly Palace and was crushed by the Five Elements Mountain, or escorted the Tang monks on the road to learn the scriptures, he never saw Bodhi Ancestor again, and perhaps Fang Inch Mountain disappeared into the Three Realms with Bodhi Ancestor.
So who is Bodhi Guru? Friends who have read the Buddhist scriptures will know that there is a person called His Holiness Subhuti, and he and the Bodhi of Fangzhi Mountain are only one word apart, what is the connection between the two?
1. The names of the two are extremely similar, in the first episode of journey to the West, Wu Cheng'en wrote: There is a three-star cave in the mountain with an oblique moon, and there is a god in that cave, called The Ancestor of Subhuti.
One is the "Subhuti Guru" and the other is the "Subhuti Venerable", which does seem to be quite close.
2. Bodhi Guru's dojo, Fangzhi Mountain, is located in West Niuhe Chau, and His Holiness Subhuti is a disciple of Rulai, who also practices in West Niu He Chau.
3. Sun Wukong committed a heinous death penalty that could not be forgiven for the Heavenly Palace, but ru had an unexpressible preference for Sun Wukong from beginning to end. Rulai not only gently pressed Sun Wukong under the Five Elements Mountain, but also pulled him into the procession of taking sutras five hundred years later, and Sun Wukong was also the only one among the disciples of the Tang monks to become a Buddha.
Is it because Sun Wukong was a disciple of Subhuti?
1. The titles are different
The Bodhi of Fangzhi Mountain is called Bodhi Ancestor, and Sun Wukong said in the original text: "When I went to the land boundary of West Niuhe Continent and visited for a long time, I was fortunate to meet an old ancestor and passed on the true fruit of my life with heaven." Therefore, some readers call Bodhi "Bodhi Laozu"
Whether it is the ancestor or the ancestor, it shows that Bodhi is the founder of the mountain, a person with great contributions and achievements.
Subhuti, on the other hand, is merely a title of "Venerable One." "His Holiness" is derived from the Buddhist scriptures and refers to a sage who is talented and wise. Compared with the ancestors and ancestors, Subhuti and Bodhi are obviously not a grade.
2. Spell cultivation is different
His Holiness Subhuti was one of the ten great disciples under the Rulai Seat, and his only arhat at the Spirit Mountain was the arhat fruit position, and he had not yet reached the state of a bodhisattva. If Subhuti was Sun Wukong's master, how could he teach a sun wukong who made a big fuss in the heavenly palace within three years?
On the other hand, the original text says that he is "not born, does not perish, does not destroy the three three elements, full qi and full of god and ten thousand kindnesses", and even more has the magic power of "performing the three-fold teachings, subtle and perfect", which is far from being comparable to His Holiness Subhuti.
In summary, subhuti and bodhi are only one word apart, but they are very different.
