"In the early 1980s, my science fiction novel "Black Shadow" was first serialized in the Yangcheng Evening News." In 2016, Ye Yonglie told reporters in an interview that the serialization of "Black Shadow" had a great impact at the time, and Pearl River Film Studios planned to adapt it into a movie.

On December 30, 1980, the third edition of Yangcheng Evening News published a preview of Ye Yonglie's latest novel "Black Shadow": "'Ghost Mountain Black Shadow' is a thrilling science fantasy novel, the storyline is confusing, full of fantasy, and there are often unexpected strokes in the ups and downs. The novel will be serialized in this edition starting next Year's Day. ”

From December 30, 1980 to March 27, 1981, "Black Shadow" was serialized in the Yangcheng Evening News for four months, and the response was enthusiastic. The work even became a node for Ye Yonglie to move from a popular science writer to a documentary literary creation.

Before moving towards documentary literature, popular science writers were the most dazzling and well-known labels on Ye Yonglie's body.

Ye Yonglie, who graduated from the Department of Chemistry of Peking University, wrote a popular science book "100,000 Whys" at the age of 20, "Why Airplanes Are Afraid of Birds", "Why Fish Can Breathe in water", "Why Sprout potatoes can't be eaten"... These interesting and quirky questions accompany the childhood of many children, and Ye Yonglie gives the answer like the almighty "Doraemon", which has influenced generations and become the scientific enlightenment of many children.

"PHS Roaming the Future" opened up the imagination of children in that era for future life, and at the same time had the dual meaning of scientific and literary enlightenment.

After readers learned the news of Ye Yonglie's death, they expressed regret and mourning. Some readers said that when they first read "PHS Roaming the Future", they were deeply shocked, "In the 60s of the last century, I could imagine an electronic watch that would automatically display time, and a car that could fly in the sky without colliding, and Ye Yonglie's imagination was really admirable." ”

Some netizens also commented that the book is the "golden key" to open his free imagination and enter the psychedelic world of the mind, ""PHS Roaming the Future" is the first science fiction book I have contacted, a large a4 folio, pictures and texts. The plot of the book, throughout my childhood to adolescence, inspired me to look up at the stars and look forward to the future. ”

Generalists of stylistic experimentation:

From popular science creation to documentary literature

After 1983, Ye Yonglie began to shift from popular science writing to non-fiction writing, and during the critical period of reform and opening up, Ye Yonglie created a large number of reportage and documentary literature.

"The Red Starting Point", "History Chose Mao Zedong", "Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek", "The Rise and Fall of the Gang of Four", "The Biography of Chen Boda", "Haunting storm", "Deng Xiaoping Changed China", "He Influenced China: The Complete Biography of Chen Yun", "Hu Qiaomu", "Fu Lei and Fu Cong", "Jiang Qing Biography"... Ye Yonglie, who plunged into history, left us nearly 15 million words of documentary literature.

Ye Yonglie and his work "Deng Xiaoping Changes China"

On September 20, 1992, Ye Yonglie's long-form documentary literature "The Rise of Mao Zedong" began to be serialized in the Yangcheng Evening News, which lasted until December 25, 1992, with a total of 53 articles published in three months.

"The Rise of Mao Zedong" is another masterpiece after Ye Yonglie's continuation of "The Red Starting Point", and the author carefully describes the history of the Chinese revolution from 1927 to 1935 around the ups and downs of Mao Zedong with rich historical materials. In order to write this book, the author traveled thousands of miles, interviewed many historical witnesses and insiders, and unearthed many little-known historical facts.

When it comes to biographical writing, Ye Yonglie said that he adhered to the "nine-character policy" for more than thirty years - "big themes, high-level, first-hand". He also has his own distinct principles in choosing to pass on the master, one is that the popularity is high and the transparency is poor; the second is that it can reflect an important history of contemporary China; and the third is that no one has written it, even if someone has written it, but it is written shallowly or poorly.

In Ye Yonglie's view, the creation of documentary literature is "seven points to run, three points to write", very hard, afraid of suffering and tired do not do this line.

In addition to popular science creation and documentary literature, since 2015, Ye Yonglie has turned to the creation of long urban novels, and after three years of hard work, he has completed the 1.35 million-word "Shanghai Trilogy", which reflects Shanghai in different historical periods from different perspectives.
