Book thieves
"Book Thief" tells the life of the lonely girl Lisay in the tone of death and rich feelings. In a foster family and a war environment, nine-year-old Lisayer survived the suffering of reality through the power of reading and writing, and also helped those around her who also suffered: reading to the Jews hiding in the basement of her adoptive father's house, reading stories for neighbors hiding in bomb shelters, comforting the panicked heart, subtly influencing and changing the vulgar disposition. This power even the god of death was amazed: why do human beings show cruel killing on the one hand, and at the same time have heartfelt love?
The author, Max Jussack, an award-winning author of contemporary Australian writings, writes to his readers:
Dear Readers,
Thank you for reading this Book Thief...
When I was a child, I used to listen to stories. My father and mother used to be in the kitchen, telling my brother, my two sisters and me the stories of their childhood, and I was fascinated by them and couldn't move. They mentioned that the whole city was shrouded in fire, bombs fell near their homes, and the strong friendships they had built up in childhood, strong friendships that could not be destroyed even by the fire of war and time.
There is a small story in it that has always remained in my heart...
My mom lived in the suburbs of Munich as a child. She said that when she was six years old, she heard a noisy sound coming from the street one day.
She ran outside to take a look and saw a group of Jews being escorted to the nearby Dakow concentration camp. At the end of the line was an exhausted old man who could not keep up with the pace of the team. A boy saw the old man's misery and ran home to get a piece of bread for the old man, who was so grateful that he knelt down and kissed the young man's ankle. As a result, a soldier saw it, came over and snatched the bread from the old man's hand, and whipped the old man hard. After the fight, the soldiers turned and chased the boy and beat him up. In the same moment, there is at the same time the great human dignity and the cruel human violence. I think this event speaks volumes about the nature of human nature.
After hearing these stories told by my parents, I always wanted to write them into a small book. The result was the birth of The Book Thief.
And the significance of the book "Book Thief" is far more than I originally imagined. For me, Book Thief is all I have ever been about. No matter what other people think of this book, whether their evaluation is good or bad, I know in my heart that this is my best creation. As an author, of course, I am deeply satisfied with my 'best creation'.
Thank you again and bless you.
"Human beings, haunt my heart."
"Acts of trust and love are usually recognizable only by children."
"At the end of the journey, the old questions, the old ones you don't want to touch, have been transformed and await you."
"The streets of the city are full of people. However, even if the streets are empty, strangers will not be more lonely than they are now. ”
