The content of this letter is Zeng Zhennan's contribution to The Radar, and the full text is as follows: Comrade Radar Studies: Send a copy of the manuscript introducing Chen Jiangong, please add the examination office. I have long wanted to write a letter for advice. I was very impressed by your review article. Your analysis of "The Forgotten Corner of Love" and articles such as "Hope is on This Side" have sharp insights and accurate comments, which have great inspiration for me. I'm learning to write reviews, so I pay more attention to the characteristics of the various companies that are active in the critics. We hope to get your help in the future. Commenting on Chen Jiangong's text, I would like to avoid generalization and try to put forward some insights. At the same time, I want to avoid repeating other articles I have written, and I will spend time and discretion when writing. After writing, I found that it was longer, if you need to abridge, please write to contact. In addition, I once sent Comrade Chen Danchen an article commenting on Zhang Xianliang's "Love Story of the Earth Prison", but there has been no echo so far, and it is estimated that it cannot be used. Please remind him when you run into him and ask him to return it to me. Thank you. Best wishes! Zeng Zhennan 1981.4.17Qilu Evening News Qilu One-point reporter Ling Wenxiu This is a letter written by literary critic Zeng Zhennan to another literary critic Radar. In the early 1980s, there were two influential young critics in the domestic literary circles, one was Radar and the other was Zeng Zhennan. Radar writes reviews only to see works and not people, and some people later become big writers, such as Mo Yan. For early works such as "Red Sorghum", Radar has written three reviews. Some writers are discovered by him before they become famous. In 1979, Lu Yao published the short story "In Front of a New Life" in Gansu Literature and Art, which Radar discovered and commented on. When he wrote his first review for the writer Dong, Dong Was still a small reporter; when he wrote an article in Guangming Daily to promote Xue Mo's "Great Desert Festival", Xue Mo was still a primary school teacher in Wuwei; when he followed Chen Yazhen, Chen Yazhen was still a farmer. Nowadays, many of the famous masterpieces that we are familiar with are first commented on and recommended to the public by radar, which is called "Bole" and "super star scout" in the contemporary literary world by some scholars. Nowadays, many excellent novelists and works known to everyone, such as Chen Shixu's "The General in the Town", Han Shaogong's "Flying Over the Blue Sky", "The Sound of the Wind Blowing", etc., are the first comments on Radar. Zhang Wei is a writer that Radar continues to pay attention to, and every time Zhang Wei publishes a new work, he will carefully read it, put forward his own opinions and suggestions, and insist that the loss of "Ancient Ships" and the Mao Dun Literature Award is the "regret of the lost pearl" of the Mao Award. In 2018, Radar died of illness, and many writers and critics wrote articles to remember it, believing that Radar was a witness, critic, and participant in the literature of the new era, and an important critic throughout the forty years of literature in the new period. Mo Yan believes that Radar's death is "a big star in the literary world". The eulogy articles written by Bai Ye, president of the Society for the Study of Contemporary Chinese Literature, and Cheng Guangwei, a professor at Chinese Min University, both mention the idea that in the early 1980s, there were two influential young critics in the literary world, one was Radar and the other was Zeng Zhennan. The letter was written on April 17, 1981, when Zeng Zhennan was a graduate student in the Chinese Department of Peking University and studied literary and art theory with Mr. Yang Han, and Radar was working in the editorial department of the China Writers Association's Literature and Art Daily. In the letter, Zeng Zhennan spoke highly of Radar's commentary, expressed the meaning of modesty and seeking advice, and at the same time mentioned two commentaries he had written about Chen Jiangong and Zhang Xianliang to see if the "Literature and Art Daily" could publish them. Chen Danchen, mentioned in the letter, was also the editor of the "Literature and Art Daily" and later served as the deputy editor-in-chief. The two articles cited in the letter are "Depth and Capacity - Reading (The Forgotten Corners of Love)", and "Hope is on This Side - After Reading a New Batch of New Works". Both articles were included in Radar's review collection Say Art Triumph. Zeng Zhennan submitted two articles, one of which was "Chen Jiangong and His Short Stories", written in April 1981, which was submitted to Radar, and the content was a review of Chen Jiangong's short stories such as "Flowing Water Bend", "Confused Starry Sky", "Crushed Morning Dawn", and believed that what flowed through Chen Jiangong's artistic world was a common and strong thing: that is, irrepressible, combative, and social enthusiasm, which was full of youthful firepower, which was manifested as indignation at the ugly phenomenon of society and contempt for the philosophy of the mediocre. It is also manifested as a concern for the fate of working people and a praise for their hearts, and the focus of this enthusiastic concentration is the exploration of the true meaning and value of life. Another article submitted by Zeng Zhennan was written in January 1981, "Purifying the Soul in the Poisonous Flame of Purgatory: Commenting on Zhang Xianliang's Novella "Love Words of the Earth Prison"),which was submitted to Chen Danchen, who through careful analysis of the characters in the novel, believed that this work had a deep realist characteristic of showing the soul, giving people great pain and great hope. The ten-volume "General History of Chinese Literature" edited by Zhang Jiong, Deng Shaoji, and Fan Jun, in the chapter "Active Theoretical Critics in the New Era", specially lists the section "Novel Research and Radar, Zeng Zhennan", arguing that "Radar has always been at the forefront of criticism, with a fast-tracking posture, closely watching the development trend and trend of literary creation, especially novel creation", "some of his thick papers and their poetic strength penetrate the back of the paper"; He believes that "Zeng Zhennan's literary criticism belongs to the criticism of aesthetic history, full of passion and literary style, can explore the ideological connotation and artistic characteristics of the work from the social history and aesthetic meaning, and the writing is straightforward and sincere", and highly praises the contributions made by Radar and Zeng Zhennan in the field of contemporary novel criticism. This letter is a testimony to the two literary critics sharing and exchanging academic ideas, and also records the academic growth path of literary critics.
