From October 16 to October 17, the 2021 Academic Annual Conference of the China Journalism History Society with the theme of "New Liberal Arts and Future Communication: Building Journalism and Communication with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era" was held in Shenzhen. More than 700 experts and scholars in the field of journalism and communication at home and abroad participated in the conference to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the development of journalism and communication in the new era.

The annual meeting was initiated and hosted by the China Journalism History Society, co-sponsored by Shenzhen University, hosted by the School of Communication of Shenzhen University, the Research Center for Media Integration and International Communication of Shenzhen University, and co-organized by the second-level institutions of the China Journalism History Society. The annual conference has a dean's forum, an editor-in-chief forum, a standing council meeting of the Chinese Journalism History Society, and 24 sub-forums in different fields of journalism and communication.

On the morning of October 16, Li Qingquan, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Shenzhen University, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, welcomed experts and scholars from all over the country in the discipline of journalism and communication, and briefly introduced the founding goals and development of Shenzhen University and the School of Communication of Shenzhen University.

Subsequently, Wang Runze, president of the China Journalism History Society and professor of Chinese Min University, said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the annual conference that unprecedented changes are taking place in the world today, standing at a new historical starting point, the conference hopes to take the new liberal arts as the framework to look forward to the academic territory of journalism and communication with Chinese characteristics and promote the in-depth development of journalism and communication with Chinese characteristics. The opening speech session was presided over by Chao Naipeng, Dean of the School of Communication of Shenzhen University.

After the opening speech and the group photo of the conference, Yu Qingqing, dean of the School of Journalism and Communication of Xiamen University, presided over the keynote speech session of the conference. Michael Shudson, a professor at Columbia University's School of Journalism, delivered a report online on the topic of technological determinism in the study of the history of media and communication. He believes that the study of the history of journalism should link the changes in the journalism industry with the historical changes in the society in which it lives, and examine them from the perspective of relationships and interactions. Today, when technology has received a lot of attention, technology should be a factor that cannot be ignored in the study of media and media history. Based on this, we need to rethink the relationship between technology, media, and society, and the trend of technological determinism.

Lin Rupeng, vice president of the China Journalism History Society and secretary of the Party Committee of Jinan University, proceeded from the new liberal arts framework in the theme of the conference and elaborated some thoughts on the cultivation of journalistic talents in the context of the new era. Lin Rupeng put forward the "one strengthening and five reforms" model for talent training: "one strong", which refers to strengthening marxist news concept education, and the "five reforms" are the development model of reforming the teaching team of colleges and universities, the training plan of reforming news talents, the mode of reforming talent training, the reform of practical teaching, and the reform of the co-construction and sharing mode of educational resources.

Hu Baijing, vice president of Chinese Min University and professor of the School of Journalism of Chinese Min University, delivered a speech on the theme of "Opening the Future in the Historical Narrative". Hu Baijing said that historical research is the foundation of journalism and communication research, and it still has important reference value for future academic research. He believes that scholars of journalism and communication should maintain an enterprising will on historical and theoretical issues.

Cheng Manli, honorary president of the China Journalism History Society and dean of the Institute of National Strategic Communication of Peking University, introduced the theoretical origins of journalism and communication with Chinese characteristics by expounding Marxism and the journalism practice of modern Chinese newspaper people, and put forward some suggestions for the future construction of disciplines. She said that after more than 30 years of continuous exploration, the theory of socialist journalism with Chinese characteristics has become the cornerstone of the construction of China's journalism and theory.

Chen Changfeng, honorary president of the Chinese Journalism History Society and executive vice dean of the School of Journalism and Communication of Tsinghua University, focused on algorithms in the digital age and discussed the use of algorithms in information dissemination from a normative perspective. Chen Changfeng believes that in today's "algorithm society", the invisible logic of algorithms profoundly affects all aspects of society. How to disassemble the black box of the algorithm and how to require the algorithm's makers to "make good use" of the technology should be the topics that will be valued in the future information dissemination.

Sui Yan, vice president of the China Journalism History Society and dean of the School of Journalism at the Communication University of China, discussed the tension of information modernity from the perspective of accelerating social and mass communication. Sui Yan said that the accelerated development of digital technology and post-industrial society has provided the soil for the emergence of the era of cluster communication, and the transformation of information production methods triggered by cluster communication has also changed social production relations. Sui Yan analyzed the tension of information in modern society in this context.

Wu Yumin, director of the Research Center for Media and Cultural Development of Shenzhen University and professor of the School of Communication of Shenzhen University, longitudinally sorted out and analyzed the historical consciousness of journalism and communication. Wu Yumin said that news, as a way of recording, itself carries historical attributes. But news is not only a carrier of history, but also an important player in the process of history. In the study of journalism and communication, it is crucial to think about the relationship between journalism and history.

Wang Runze, President of the China Journalism History Society and Vice Dean of the School of Journalism of Chinese Min University, delivered a speech on the theme of "Innovation of Journalism Knowledge System in the Transformation of Information Society". Wang Runze believes that in the context of the transformation of the information society caused by technology, the positioning, content and framework of journalism knowledge should be rethought. The innovation of the journalism knowledge system will be an important issue in the future study of journalism.

Chen Jianyun, vice president of the China Journalism History Society and professor of Fudan University, and Chen Xianhong, vice president of the Chinese Journalism History Society and professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, discussed the above topics with the scholars who made the report, and discussed the framework of the new liberal arts and the challenges and development of journalism and communication disciplines in the new information age.

On the afternoon of October 16, the Dean's Forum aimed at providing a platform for cooperation and exchange between various colleges and universities was successfully held, and the deans of more than 30 domestic schools of journalism and communication were invited to attend the meeting. The editor-in-chief forum held in the evening invited more than a dozen editors-in-chief in the field of journalism and communication at home and abroad to participate. During the meeting, the editors-in-chief of various journals exchanged topics such as academic journal construction, development trends of journalism and communication, journal quality and editing management.

In addition, from the afternoon of the 16th to the 12th a.m. on the 17th, 24 sub-forums of the Conference were held simultaneously. Scholars from various universities around the world who are seeking new knowledge in different fields have published their research results at the sub-forum. Due to the limitations of the epidemic, the clubs have adopted a combination of online and offline participation.

It is understood that the special forum on the history of journalism and communication, with the theme of "New Liberal Arts and Future Communication: Research on the History of Journalism and Communication in Contemporary China", launched four special sessions around the reports of participating scholars. The sub-forum on the history of journalism and communication education takes the research of education reform as the main concern, focusing on many issues such as curriculum system reform and talent training innovation, education evaluation index system, and educational value orientation in the digital age. The theme of the sub-forum of the Professional Committee on the History of Foreign Journalism and Communication is "Origins and Changes: Reshaping the Study of Foreign New History in the Context of the New Liberal Arts". The Sub-Forum on the History of Online Communication focuses on emerging topics in the digital environment, such as mediatization, digital communication, and future communication. The sub-forum on the history of ethnic minority journalism and communication held four sub-forums with the themes of ethnic cultural narrative and discourse analysis, public opinion landscape and educational development in ethnic minority areas, media change and the cultivation of national community consciousness, media practice and ethnic culture dissemination cases.

The Sub-Forum on the History of Chinese Journalism and Communication in Taiwan and Southeast Asia focused on the global dissemination of Chinese in the future, and conducted a special discussion on the "Belt and Road" and the research of taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao media. The Sub-Forum on the History of Advertising and Media Development has a total of five sessions. The Joint Sub-Forum on Global Communication and Public Diplomacy and Public Relations focused on China's discourse power in the era of digital communication and launched a sub-forum report. The public opinion sub-forum takes the new era led by technological change as the background, and pays attention to the reform of public opinion communication and the innovation of social governance in the era of intelligence. With the theme of "New Liberal Arts and The Intelligent Era: Construction of Media Economics and Management Disciplines", the Media Economics and Management Sub-Forum discussed the issues of media production, consumption, new business formats and new management trends in the intelligent era. The audiovisual communication sub-forum discussed the problems, representations and cultures in audiovisual communication in the image era, and focused on the study of visual rhetoric and the study of visual narrative. The sub-forum on the history of news communication ideas emphasized "new horizons" and evaluated the reports of the participants from multiple directions, such as the new selection of topics, new perspectives, and new theories. The sub-forum on applied journalism and communication is guided by the new trend of applied journalism and communication, and pays attention to the trend of specialization, digitization and intelligence in the field of applied communication. With the theme of "New Liberal Arts and 100 Years of Red Publishing", the sub-forum on the history of editing and publishing reported and discussed the research topics of the 100-year red publishing of the Communist Party of China, the optimization of new liberal arts and editing and publishing disciplines, the reconstruction of the publishing industry in the context of intelligent media, the strategy of cultural power and the publishing industry.

The Media Regulation and Ethics sub-forum focuses on three "new": new theories, new methods, and new trends, that is, new developments in media regulation and ethics research under technological change. The sub-forum of the Communication Studies Professional Committee takes "Digital Communication and Social Development" as the main direction, and pays attention to many valuable topics in the discipline. Based on Chinese society, the sub-forum on journalism with Chinese characteristics conducts research on the theory of journalism with Chinese characteristics in the context of digital context and mediated society.

The sub-forum of the Party Newspaper and Party Periodical focused on the research on the history of the CCP's news dissemination practice in the past century, and made requirements for the theoretical research of the CPC Party Newspaper and Party Periodical. The sub-forum on symbol communication is entitled "Thoughts on Technology and Art: The Expansion of Chinese Communication Semiotics", which mainly focuses on topics such as art and symbol consumption, technology and symbol cognition, cross-cultural symbol communication, and the contemporary context of the theory of news communication symbols. The Computational Communication Sub-Forum focuses on the development of computational communication and new liberal arts. The sub-forum on local journalism history was themed "Local Society and Regional Culture from the Perspective of Media Memory", and the participants mostly conducted a longitudinal investigation of local journalism practice in modern and modern China by means of historical data analysis. The sub-forum of the Museum and Historiographic Communication Professional Committee focuses on the dissemination of history from the perspective of digital humanities and emphasizes the revival of traditional culture. The theme of the Health Communication Sub-Forum is "Research Innovation in Chinese Health Communication That Integrates Disciplinary/Industry/Cultural Contexts". The Doctoral Students Forum invited doctoral students from universities across the country to participate in the conference to exchange their thoughts on "Future-oriented Journalism and Communication Research".

The closing ceremony of the 2021 Annual Conference of the Chinese Journalism History Society was held on the afternoon of October 17. The closing ceremony was presided over by Chang Jiang, co-secretary general of the China Journalism History Society and professor of Shenzhen University. Chang Jiang thanked the participants and the organizers for their efforts for the conference, and invited the representatives of the sub-forums to make concluding statements on the reports of the sub-forums of the annual meeting.

At the end of the closing ceremony, as the president of the China Journalism History Society, Wang Runze made a concluding speech on the conference.
