Songhu Detachment of the New Fourth Army: Founded in Pudong, Shanghai, it eventually developed into the 178th Regiment of the 20th Army

author:Eyu Anhui Patrol Envoy

In August 1944, dozens of Japanese troops left Shanghai Zhoupu and then went to Xinchang to suppress the local anti-Japanese forces. This group of devils is extremely arrogant, and they do no evil, and they don't know how many villagers have been harmed along the way. However, when passing by Zhujiadian, a dense rain of bullets suddenly flooded the team. In the end, a total of 34 Japanese soldiers cried out for their lives. As for this article, I would like to focus on the nemesis of these Japanese devils - the Pudong Detachment of the New Fourth Army!

When it comes to the Pudong detachment of the New Fourth Army, we must first start with Zhu Yamin, a native of Changzhou, Jiangsu Province. Zhu Yamin, he was born in 1916 in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province. Due to his poor family, he came to Shanghai before the age of 15 and has been working in a printing house ever since. In 1936, he came to Hong Kong and has been actively involved in some of the workers' movements organized by us ever since. In 1938, he joined the Party for his outstanding performance. In May 1940, he was sent back to Pudong, Shanghai by our party.

At this time, Shanghai has long been the whole territory. The Japanese army occupied some towns in downtown Shanghai and the suburbs, and the puppet army occupied some small and medium-sized market towns in rural areas. The Loyal National Salvation Army, which is subordinate to the Military Command Bureau of the Central Military Commission, is mainly distributed in the coastal area of Pudong. The Japanese and the Japanese have built hundreds of kilometers of bamboo fences, which have been tightly controlling the Pudong area. Therefore, it is extremely difficult for the anti-Japanese armed forces led by our Party to gain a foothold in Pudong.

In 1940, our party had already formed a number of anti-Japanese armed forces in Pudong, mainly including the 5th detachment of the Songhu guerrilla group in the third theater headed by Lian Baisheng, and the pseudo-13th division headed by Zhu Renjun. Both units had hundreds of men and were predominantly Shanghainese. Among them, Lian Baisheng's 5th detachment had a number of brigades under its command, and Zhu Yamin was quickly promoted to political instructor of the first brigade because of his bravery in battle, and soon changed to the deputy captain of the fifth brigade.

In 1942, most of these anti-Japanese armed forces led by our Party crossed Hangzhou Bay south to open up new anti-Japanese base areas in eastern Zhejiang. According to statistics, there were nearly a thousand people in the army going south, and only a small number of commanders and fighters continued to stay in Pudong and continued to persist in the anti-Japanese struggle. This is not only the need of the anti-Japanese resistance, but also in order to cope with the heavy encirclement and suppression of the Japanese puppet army and preserve part of the anti-Japanese forces as much as possible. Although Zhu Yamin did not give up, as a party member, he still carried out the order to go south.

In September of the same year, in view of the urgent shortage of anti-Japanese forces in Pudong, the party committee of the eastern Zhejiang district sent Zhu Yamin back to Pudong. He led a short gun brigade of only 12 commanders and fighters, following the designation of the 5th Detachment, and resumed guerrilla warfare in Pudong. Hearing that he had returned, the local people were particularly happy and joined this heroic force. By the end of the year, the new 5th detachment had grown to more than 30 people. However, due to the enemy's outnumbered, the team could only disperse and inhabit the fields.

There is a bully in the Pudong Group, his name is Han Hongsheng. He currying favor with the Japanese in every way, and as a result, he became the president of the local pseudo-maintenance association. The people were so indignant that Zhu Yamin decided to take the lead in shooting at him. One night, Zhu Yamin sent a small detachment. Disguised as pseudo-"Qingxiang" personnel, these fighters broke into the traitor's home with a big wave. They took Han Hongsheng hostage and then killed him in the chaos. Since then, the new 5th detachment has shaken the whole of Pudong.

In early 1943, the new 5th detachment killed 13 traitors and bullies in Hesha, Pudong. With the cooperation of the local people, they haunted the harbors, rivers, and fields in Pudong, and repeatedly ambushed or secretly attacked small units of the Japanese puppet army. One night, Zhu Yamin and dozens of fighters raided a squadron of puppet troops stationed in Xinchang, Pudong. Our soldiers did not have bloodshed, and in less than half a day they captured alive nearly a hundred sleeping puppet soldiers.

By 1944, the force had grown to nearly 200 men, and with the addition of some local troops in the surrounding areas, the army had expanded to more than 300 men. This team was first named the Pudong Detachment of the New Fourth Army, and then in November 1944 it was reorganized into the Songhu Detachment of the Zhejiang East Guerrilla Column of the New Fourth Army. This detachment was headed by Zhu Yamin, Jiang Jie and Chen Weida successively served as the political commissar of the detachment, Zeng Ping served as the director of the political office of the detachment, and Zhang Xizhen served as deputy detachment leader and chief of staff.

In August 1944, Zhu Yamin led his troops to launch an ambush at Zhujiadian. During the battle, about 50 Japanese troops passed through Zhujiadian (now Huilong Village, Liuzao Town, Pudong New Area) to Xinchang to suppress the local anti-Japanese forces. Near a stone bridge south of Zhujiadian, this group of ghosts was ambushed by hundreds of people of our army. A dense rain of bullets quickly overwhelmed the beasts, and in the end, our army killed a total of 34 Japanese troops. As for the Japanese, only a dozen people escaped.

Since the occupation of Pudong, the Japanese army has been on its toes, and they have never encountered such a big blow. Therefore, the Battle of Zhujiadian was very shocking to the Japanese puppet army. Since then, the Japanese army has never dared to send small troops to the countryside to sweep up, and some puppet troops have also taken the initiative to show their goodwill to our army. This battle brought out the name of the Songhu detachment of the New Fourth Army. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the General Staff Headquarters and the Academy of Military Sciences wrote this excellent "example of offensive warfare" into the textbooks.

In January 1945, a Us plane was unfortunately shot down by the Japanese army while bombing the Japanese in Pudong, and the American pilot Tollet parachuted and landed near Zhoupu. After Zhu Yamin heard the news, he immediately commanded the short gun team to rescue him. Subsequently, our army experienced hardships and twists and turns, and finally sent him to the anti-Japanese base area in eastern Zhejiang. Eventually, he returned safely to the Rear Base. The film "An American Pilot," released decades later, was based on the event.

By the end of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Songhu detachment of the New Fourth Army had been expanded from three main squadrons to three main brigades. In the first half of 1945, Zhu Yamin and Chen Weida led the main force of this detachment into Puxi. Deputy detachment commander Zhang Xizhen and others led some commanders and fighters to continue to persist in guerrilla warfare in Pudong. After the end of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Songhu detachment has grown to more than 1,000 people. In October of the same year, this team and other units of the Zhejiang East Column of the New Fourth Army met the division in victory.

After meeting the division, the Songhu Detachment of the New Fourth Army was reorganized into the first detachment of the Second Column of the New Fourth Army's Jiangsu-Zhejiang Military Region (formerly the Zhejiang East Guerrilla Column of the New Fourth Army). In November 1945, the former Zhejiang East Guerrilla Column of the New Fourth Army marched all the way north and then to the Central China Liberated Area. In Lianshui, northern Jiangsu, the former Zhejiang East Column of the New Fourth Army was reorganized into the Third Brigade of the First Column of the Jinpu Front Field Army of the New Fourth Army. Its first and fifth detachments were merged into the Seventh Regiment of the Third Brigade, with Xie Zhongliang as its commander.

Before the troops went north, Zhu Yamin left the unit due to injury, and his deputy Zhang Xizhen was promoted to the leader of the first detachment. At the same time, Chen Weida served as the political commissar of the detachment, Shu Yuwang as the deputy detachment leader, Chen Chang was competent as the chief of staff, and Gu Fusheng was appointed as the director of the political office. According to statistics, the Songhu detachment of the New Fourth Army annihilated no less than 1,500 Japanese puppet troops during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. At the same time, it also lost hundreds of commanders and fighters. Before it was reorganized into the Seventh Regiment, the unit had grown to more than 1,300 men.

This unit was reorganized in Lianshui as the Seventh Regiment of the Third Brigade of the First Column of the New Fourth Army, with Xie Zhongliang as the regimental commander, Qiu Xiangtian as the political commissar, Zhang Xizhen as the deputy regimental commander, Gu Fusheng as the deputy political commissar, Zeng Amu as the chief of staff, and Wang Zhihua as the director of the political office. As for Zhu Yamin, the founder of this unit, it is very regrettable that he has not been able to return to his old unit after recovering from his wounds. Jiang Jie and Chen Weida and others also left their old troops one after another.

In the Liberation War, the Seventh Regiment successively participated in the Battle of Subei, the Battle of Lunan, the Battle of Laiwu, the Battle of Menglianggu, the Battle of Yudong, the Battle of Huaihai, and the Battle of Crossing the River. This unit fought in the south and the north, and made countless contributions. In 1949, the first column of the East China Field Army, with Ye Fei as its commander, was reorganized into the 20th Army of the Third Field Army. The former Zhejiang East Guerrilla Column of the New Fourth Army was reorganized into the 60th Division of the 20th Army, and the songhu detachment of the former New Fourth Army was changed to the 178th Regiment of the 60th Division of the 20th Army.

In 1950, under the leadership of commander Zhang Yixiang, division commander Peng Fei, and regimental commander Wang Ronggui, this unit participated in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. The 178th Regiment desperately blocked more than a thousand American troops in the Battle of Chosin Lake, and after more than ten days of fierce fighting, this heroic regiment had lost more than half of it, but only 5 infantry companies were left with combatants. However, the Ministry is still struggling to pursue and annihilate the fleeing enemy. In the fifth campaign, the regiment destroyed more than 20 tanks in one battle with a single company of rocket launchers.

In the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, the 178th Regiment made great achievements in battle, and a large number of combat heroes and martyrs emerged, such as: soldier Cheng Jiuling, who was awarded the title of "Lonely Hero" by the headquarters of the Volunteer Army; Ren Yuxiang, the squad leader, who made heroic sacrifices, was honored with the title of first-class meritorious service and won the title of second-class model; Tao Miaogen, commander of the second battalion, who died heroically in the Huachuan Blockade Battle in the third stage of the Fifth Campaign; and Pan Zemin, a soldier, who was awarded the title of "Anti-Tank Hero" by the Volunteer Army Headquarters.

In 1952, the 178th Regiment left the Korean theater and returned home. In 1955, the unit took part in the famous Battle of Yijiangshan Island. All the commanders and fighters of the 178th Regiment and a battalion of the 180th Regiment, as the main force of the battle, showed tenacity. With the cooperation of fraternal units such as the Navy and the Air Force, these two units liberated Yijiangshan Island in less than half a day, annihilating more than 1,000 enemy troops. Chairman Praise: The landing battle on Yijiangshan Island was fought very well!

After the war, this unit was stationed in Zhejiang for a long time. In 1975, the 178th Regiment of the 60th Division of the 20th Army moved to Henan and was stationed at Minggang in Xinyang. Later, this unit was incorporated into a digital mechanized infantry brigade of our army. As of now, we can find some remnants of this unit from a composite brigade of the 83rd Army. The Pudong Detachment of the New Fourth Army - The Songhu Detachment of the New Fourth Army, although they have all withdrawn from the stage of history, their merits and prestige will never be immortalized!
