Mayi, one name, two places. The first was Mayi County, which was established by the Qin Dynasty, and its seat of government was in present-day Shuozhou City, Shanxi Province, which belonged to Yanmen County. At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Western Jin Dynasty was restored, and Yongjia was abolished in the fifth year (311). The Records of Jin TaikangDi Yun: "When Qin Shi built this city, it collapsed, and there were horses that walked around and repeatedly, and the fathers and elders were different, because they built the city according to it, so they were named Mayi." It is said that Qin Shi Huang once sent the general Meng Tian to attack the Xiongnu in the north, raised horses in this place, and repeatedly built and collapsed when building the city, and then there were horses circling around, and the construction was completed with traces, and since then there has been the place name of "Mayi". From the construction of the city in 215 BC to the Tang Dynasty, which lasted 932 years, the site is the area of the southern earthen city wall of the present-day Shuocheng District. The second was Mayi County, which was established in the fifth year of Tang Kaiyuan (717), which belonged to Shuo Prefecture. The seat of government was datong juncheng (大同军城, in present-day Shuozhou, Shanxi, northeast of 33 Limayi Village), which was changed to Huanqing County at the beginning of the fifth dynasty of Tang Tiancheng. The remaining gate of the ancient city of Mayi Village

There have been several great events in the history of Mayi. The first is that in the early Western Han Dynasty, it was the royal capital of Han Wangxin. In the spring of the sixth year of Han Gaozu (201 BC), Gaozu took the Han king Xin Qiang Yongwu and Taiyuan Commandery as the korean commandery, and set the capital at Jinyang (present-day Taiyuan City) to prevent the Hu people. The letter reads: "The land of the feudal state is close to the Xiongnu, and the Xiongnu are counted into the Kou; Jinyang went to Biansai and asked to rule at Mayi (present-day Shuozhou). "Gao Zu followed it. The second is the place where the "Mayi Conspiracy" took place. In the second year of Yuan Guang (133 BC), Han Fu was next to Ma Yi, trying to induce the Xiongnu to attack him, but he entered the jam, plotted to leak, and led the troops back. History is called "The Conspiracy of Ma Yi". This refers to a war of annihilation against the Xiongnu planned by the Western Han Dynasty in 133 BC (the second year of Emperor Yuanguang of the Han Dynasty) at Mayi (present-day Shuocheng District, Shuozhou, Shanxi Province). The military minister Shan Yu (grandson of Mao Dun Shan Yu) coveted the property of Mayi City and personally led 100,000 troops into Wuzhou Sai (present-day Zuoyun County, Shanxi Province), and just when the Xiongnu Shan Yu was about to enter the ambush circle of the Han Dynasty, the pavilion lieutenant guarding the beacon tower revealed to the Xiongnu Shan Yu the han army's encirclement plan, causing the Xiongnu army to retreat before reaching the encirclement, and as a result, the Xiongnu sent troops everywhere to invade the Han Border in retaliation for the siege of Mayi. Emperor Wu of Han was defeated by the siege of Mayi and failed to ambush the Xiongnu, and sent Wang Hui, who was plotting to lure the enemy, to prison, and Wang Hui committed suicide, and from then on, the Western Han Dynasty began a large-scale war with the Xiongnu. Third, Liu Wuzhou, one of the heroes of the late Sui Dynasty, once claimed the title of emperor here. In the chaotic situation at the end of the Sui Dynasty, Liu Wuzhou took the lead in raising an army, killing the Taishou King Rengong, dividing the territory here, attaching himself to the Turks, occupying Jinyang, which had sufficient food and silk, and after capturing most of Hedong, Liu Wuzhou returned to Mayi, was ordered by the Turks, proclaimed himself emperor, and was given the era name Tianxing.

According to historical records, after the abolition of Mayi in the Qin Dynasty, it was rebuilt in the fifth year of Tang Kaiyuan, and the sixteenth year of Ming Hongwu and the second year of Orthodoxy were continuously repaired, especially in the sixth year of Longqing, the city wall was bricked, based on stone, about 11.3 meters high, the female wall was 2 meters high, the circumference was 2.1 kilometers, the corner tower was 4, the shops were 12, the enemy platform was 24, and there were moon cities outside the east and west gates. During the Shunzhi period, the prefect of Datong, Cai Yonghua, wrote a preface to the fragments of the Shuozhou Chronicle, saying that Mayi was "isolated in a corner, but it was a key point on the border".
