"Exchange Works" originated from a small talk between Tao Ye and Zheng Zonglong. The "exchange choreography" of the two dance troupes seems to be a "mutual bar" between young dancers, allowing each other to develop ideas under different time and space topics; it is also a test for themselves, stepping out of their comfort zone and discovering new growth directions in uncertainty. This bold proposal was not only endorsed and appreciated by Lin Huaimin, but he even wanted to join it. Lin Huaimin's calm and quiet, Zheng Zonglong's fierce wildness, and Tao Ye's tenacity and strength - the masters have a dialogue with the scene, "negotiate" in the "exchange", and their ideas have been silently changed.

Named after a number

"12" is a choreographed work by young dancers, and it is also the number of Cloud Gate dancers who interpret this work. This is another masterpiece of his after "Heavy 3", "2", "4", "5", "6", "7", "8" and "9". Tao Ye's dances are all named after numbers, and he eliminates everything on the stage, leaving only the floor, lights and curtains. In the dancer's performance, you don't see any plot and emotion, and the dancer's body is infinitely enlarged. "Get rid of the baggage, dance back to the body" is the original intention of Tao Ye to establish the Tao Body Theater.

"The value of contemporary art or modern art lies in its uncertainty. It is open, and then gives the audience a space for imagination, allowing the audience to choose freely in the work. The expression of numbers is to eliminate the presuppositions of the audience before entering the theater, and to confirm the answer, the imagination, and the process from the viewing. So numbers are the most direct way, and they're real. On December 5, Tao Ye was interviewed by a cover news reporter in the backstage of the Sichuan Grand Theater.

In addition to the simple meaning of "a few people and a few numbers", there is another most important reason for the title of Tao Ye's work, "The number is sorted, the order of the number is the order of the work, and the work also represents my life journey, like the age of one year is increasing." So, all digital series you can feel or observe one of my creative paths through each step of it, the superposition of each number. In fact, many people may feel that the number is a particularly difficult to accept, or a particularly abstract concept, but in Tao Ye's view, the number is the most realistic and realistic way to restore the feeling of the scene.

Practiced dancing for 22 years

Talk to the world with the body

Tao Ye, 34, has been studying dance at the Chongqing Dance School for 22 years since he entered the Chongqing Dance School at the age of 12. From traditional dance to modern dance, cultivate "like a fish in the water". "There is a questioning quality in my personality, I like to ask questions since I was a child, it is a problem child, so why do you always make me laugh when you dance traditional dances? I didn't want to laugh too much, a bit rebellious. So when I face traditional dance, I am skeptical, but when I face modern dance, I am liberated at once, because it makes you return to yourself, you come to give yourself direction. Modern dance is not a genre, it is a dance that belongs to everyone's essence, so in this regard, it is very touching to me, allowing me to return to the body from the outside, from the outside to the interior. ”

The development of modern dance to this day has produced many new branches, but Tao Ye has never chosen a certain genre, in his view, "modern refers to the present, dance is a dynamic rhythm, an action, but also a choice and judgment." So modern dance is asking questions about how to move at the moment. In this day and age, you choose what to do with your body, what to express, and finally what to present in the theater? So in the end, modern dance is equivalent to having a sense of direction in my place, and the number is the most direct expression. ”

Since 2003, Tao Ye has danced at the Shanghai Venus Dance Company and the Beijing Modern Dance Company until March 2008, when he co-founded the Tao Body Theater with dancer Wang Hao. In the same year, the dance troupe welcomed another soul figure, Duan Ni (Tao Ye's wife), whose arrival injected decisive strength into the young Tao Body Theater. Today, the Tao Body Theater has traveled to more than 100 art festivals in more than 40 countries, and they have conquered many domestic and foreign audiences with their modern dance works.

"When we created these works, our first thought was to talk to the world. What do you want to talk to the world with? Then we choose the body, because the body is the most essential inheritance, just like your blood, your skin, your body determines your cultural attributes, so we finally return to this body. Tao Ye believes that all dance elements are connected to the body, their bodies are natural attributes unique to the East, and the dancers' bodies have become a natural link to communicate with the world.

Creation of the "Circular Motion System"

Promote a unique signature body aesthetic

In search of the aesthetics of the body, the potters and dancers continued to develop the spine of the body and created the "circular movement system". They studied the different ways of exerting force in the body, such as the rebound inertia of gravitational weight, the imbalance control of mid-section transfer, the contiguous process of joint muscles, etc., and the adjustment of the gap between the existence of space, the conversion of time rhythm jump, and the reflection difference of internal and external condensation to develop the body's more diversified motor potential. Today, this body training system has formed a unique and iconic body aesthetic of the Tao Body Theater on the international stage.

"In fact, our cognition of the body from childhood to adulthood will be affected by Western aesthetics, for example, when we take the dance school, we require 'three long and one small', hands long, legs long, neck long, and small face, which is the aesthetic benchmark of the West." The beauty of the oriental body comes from the 'body', like the previous women wearing the qipao, highlighting the beauty of the waist. Our traditional opera also has a lot of body displays, there are a lot of rotations, folds, these parts should be the aesthetics we find when we move. ”

Next, Tao Ye and his Tao Body Theater will continue to trace back to the roots and explore the attributes of oriental movement. "This set of things can be communicated internationally because it's really different from the Western movement. This part is also a very important part of our existence. This is a direction that we can work on, just like education and teaching.
