When working in Xiamen, Xi Jinping's secretary was a master's student who graduated from Xiamen University, and he often contacted well-known professors at Xiamen University through his secretary or other channels to borrow famous books from them or visit them for advice.
Among them, there is a foreign professor Pan Weilian. He has been teaching at Xiamen University since 1988 and has lived in Xiamen for many years, being the first foreigner to settle in Xiamen and the first foreign permanent resident in Fujian Province.
In 1999, Pan Weilian, who had been in China for more than 10 years, unfortunately contracted cancer, and his condition was so serious that he felt desperate. At this time, Xi Jinping, then acting governor of Fujian Province, entrusted people to visit the hospital with flowers, which surprised Pan Weilian, who had no idea that the governor of a province was so concerned about the condition of a xiamen university teacher.

In November 2001, Xi Jinping personally awarded Pan Weilian the certificate of "Honorary Citizen of Fujian Province". At the dinner that day, Mr. and Mrs. Pan Weilian dined at the same table with Xi Jinping, and they chatted for nearly 2 hours. Talking about how to tell the story of China to the world, Xi Jinping said that you have written a book about Xiamen, which is your second home, and you must also write about Quanzhou, which is your third home.
At the end of 2018, Professor Pan published a new book documenting China's reform and opening up from the perspective of a foreigner, and he wrote a letter to Xi Jinping and sent the book with the letter. On the eve of the Spring Festival in 2019, Xi Jinping wrote back to him, thanking the "invisible" professor for dedicating 30 years of his precious life to China's education cause. A blessing used in the letter: "The whole family 'Fu'an', a lifetime of 'long music'", because of the clever embedding of two Fujian place names, became the most popular New Year's greeting language in Fujian that year.
Xiamen University has also become an important think tank for Xi Jinping during his tenure in the region. At that time, after five years of construction, the Xiamen Special Economic Zone entered a new stage of development, and it was in urgent need of a development strategy as a decision-making guide. As the vice mayor in charge of the planning work, Xi Jinping has widely invited experts and scholars from all over the world, including Xiamen University, to contribute ideas and suggestions to the development of Xiamen. After extensive research and repeated demonstration, it took one and a half years to formulate the "Xiamen Economic and Social Development Strategy for 1985-2000", which is the earliest economic and social development strategic plan for 15 years compiled by local governments in China.

Xi Jinping not only likes to communicate with experts and professors at Xiamen University, but also likes to make friends with young people.
That year, Xi Jinping took time to xiamen university to participate in a small-scale symposium on the topic of "The Guiding Significance of Capital and the Practical Guiding Significance of Marxist Political Economy". His rich theoretical knowledge and extensive understanding of society left a deep impression on the young teachers and students attending the meeting.

Xi Jinping once revealed that when he went to the countryside, he read through "Capital" three times, and one of his favorite translations was the version translated by Wang Yanan, the former president of Xiamen University. When he heard that the Department of Economics of Xiamen University listed the three-volume original work of "Capital" as a compulsory course, he was very sure of this practice: "Learning principles and reading original works is the best way to contact Marxism." ”
One day before the Mid-Autumn Festival in 1986, Xi Jinping rode a bicycle and brought two boxes of mooncakes to the student dormitory of Xiamen University, inviting students to eat mooncakes and celebrate the festival together, which made these students who were far away from home feel the warmth of big brothers.
“...... There is a mountain of letters from all sides, please forgive me for the delay in replying to the letter. Find a time to talk, and I'm going to learn from you college students in the eighties. ”
This is Xi Jinping's reply to Zhang Hongliang, a student at Xiamen University. It turned out that the brother-in-law of Zhang Hongliang's high school classmate was a friend of Xi Jinping's, and he had some views on how to promote reform and expand opening up that he wanted to share with Xi Jinping. So he wrote a thick letter, specifically instructing Zhang Hongliang to personally hand it over to Xi Jinping. Zhang Hongliang wrote a letter to Xi Jinping, looking forward to meeting him.
The meeting place was in Xi Jinping's dormitory, the two chatted for a long time, Zhang Hongliang still remembers a passage of Xi Jinping' words: "Although you have read a lot of books, there is a lot of moisture in the books, and only by combining with the practice of the masses can you squeeze out the water." It is necessary to squeeze the knowledge in the books in order to get the dry goods of knowledge. ”
Later, Xi Jinping took Zhang Hongliang to Hecuo Village, which is at the forefront of Xiamen's coastal defense, to investigate, guide him to Zhengding to carry out social practice of tourism economics, and even personally helped him revise his graduation thesis on land intensification in Zhengding.
When Zhang Hongliang graduated, Xi Jinping wrote eight words in his graduation commemorative book: "Aim high and follow nature". He instructed Zhang Hongliang: "These eight words, you must understand well, while making up your mind, you must be pragmatic and practical." ”
