In March 2017, farine's baker reported farine on Weibo, saying that the store had been using a large number of expired moldy flours for a long time and that the hygiene conditions were poor.

He also wrote: "I reported this to the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration on March 20, 2017... For some reason, farine is still operating normally. "
This weibo received more than 1 million likes and retweets in a short period of time, which attracted the attention of relevant departments.
Three days later, farine was shut down urgently.
Nearly 2,000 bags of expired flour were found in the store.
Later, seven employees in the store, including the French pastry chef Laurent fortin, were arrested by the police and criminally enforced.
Among them, Laurent Fortin and three other Chinese employees were indicted by prosecutors in Shanghai's Minhang district on suspicion of "using expired flour in food production" and detained for more than five months.
During this period, Fortin's family demanded that the Chinese side immediately release him, and also wrote a petition to Macron and the French foreign minister, hoping that the French government would rescue Fortin from prison.
However, the boss behind the scenes, the owner of "Farine", and frank pecol, who is also a Frenchman, fled abroad to avoid Chinese censorship after the accident.
Two years later, on February 22, 2019, the Shanghai No. 3 Intermediate People's Court rendered a fair judgment on the units and personnel involved in the case.
Faxiang and Faxin were fined 1.8 million yuan and 800,000 yuan respectively for the crime of producing and selling counterfeit and shoddy products, and the 8 Chinese competent and directly responsible personnel defendants were all subject to criminal punishment to varying degrees.

Is French food really as unsafe as farine?
Of course not!
The hygiene standards of the French restaurant industry are notoriously strict, arguably the strictest in the European Union.
