AEW's recent partnership with the Owen Hart Foundation will make the young AEW League home to carry on the legacy of the late wrestler.
All Elite Wrestling will distribute Irving original merchandise, including King of Hart in the upcoming console video game, and host the annual Owen Hart Cup Tournament.
While details of the aforementioned tournament are scarce, AEW Chairman Tony Khan stressed that an announcement will be made soon.
"I will make an announcement in due course. We had a couple of important weekends. It's unusual to do Dynamite on Saturdays, but we always do Rampage on Friday nights. It's a great opportunity," Khan told Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports. “
When we return to Dynamites on Wednesday night, I plan to make more announcements about The Owen.
"I'm delighted that AEW will be the birthplace of Irving and Irving's legacy for a long time, and that's this game. It will be very special. We will publish more information. I'm glad to tell you more. ”
Owen's widow, Dr. Martha Hart, and her two children survived. Martha founded the Owen Hart Foundation at the turn of the century with the goal of providing college scholarships for children in need and housing for low-income families.
This working relationship between the Owen Hart Foundation and AEW has been "more than a year." Khan revealed that it was Chris Jericho who originally linked him to Martha.
"When we first spoke to Martha Hart, Jericho was another good friend of Barstool and a good friend of me and Martha Hart, who had Martha and I use Zoom together during the pandemic," Khan said. I think Martha has something very special that she wants to share Owen Hart's legacy with the wrestling community. It's up to her. She can choose the wrestling company she wants to work with (if any) to spread and really help build Owen Hart's indelible legacy. This is a very remarkable and important figure in the history of professional wrestling. ”
While details about the Owen Hart Cup remain tight-lipped, fans can expect a big announcement this weekend about AEW's next game.
"Now we're about to have a big knockout tournament and I'm very excited about it," Khan said. "The announcement is coming soon. This weekend I will be winning the knockout of the full elimination at TNT, which will be in the final again at Full Gear. ”
In last year's Eliminator Tournament final, Kenny Omega defeated "executioner" Adam Page at AEW Full Gear and won the title a month later at AEW Dynamite: Winter is Coming. History repeats itself this year as Khan confirmed that the former doubles champions will play their long-awaited rematch at this year's Full Gear, this time at the AEW World Championships. This comes after the executioner's triumphant return at AEW Dynamite: Homecoming last week, when he won the casino ladder competition and subsequently won himself a future title.
"It culminated in Kenny's game against the executioner last year, which is very fitting because this year we went into Full Gear and we're back and now Kenny is the world champion and he's going to face the executioner," Khan said. "As we saw last year, Kenny won the knockout rounds and eventually won the title from Jon Moxley."
