This can also be seen in the ancient definition of filial piety. For example, Mencius, the second sage of ancient China, said: "There are three filial pieties without filial piety, and no queen is greater." In the end, what are the three situations of "filial piety and three"? Mencius gave only one answer, that is, not having a son is the most filial piety. The other two situations he did not give clear. Later, the Han Dynasty classicist Zhao Qi gave two other situations of filial piety in his commentary. One is to blindly obey the parents, the parents have faults and do not persuade, trapping the parents in unrighteousness, this is the second kind of filial piety; the family is poor, the parents are old, but they do not go to the officials to eat and drink in order to provide for their parents, this is the third type of filial piety.
From these three definitions of filial piety, it can be seen that at least before the Han Dynasty, the situation of non-support or even abuse of the elderly that existed widely in modern times was not universal, and there was no need to even say it.
But now the situation is completely different. Children are financially independent, and the elderly do not have any means to restrain their children from fulfilling their filial piety. In this case, it is also a bit difficult to apply the traditional filial piety education of ancient society and force children to fulfill filial piety by law.
