Progressive pen and ink practice
——Read Xu Lixia's new character paintings
Text / Wang Tianhe
In recent years, Xu Lixia's figure paintings, from the pen and ink interest of "literati Yaxing" to the "life situation" of expressing thematic creation, show the creative ability and cognition of a Chinese painter. For her, this is not a simple mutual assistance between schema and pen and ink, nor is it the interchange of sketches and creations, nor is it the amplification of previous pictures, but the result of decades of accumulation and sublimation of painting ability.
Xu Lixia laid a good foundation for modeling in her early years, and was admitted to the military art and Chinese painting major in her youth, and was taught by Liu Dawei and Mr. Zhang Daoxing. During the most exuberant period of her youth, she was admitted to the oil painting major of the Academy of Fine Arts of Capital Normal University. The experience of shape, color, light and darkness has enabled her to accumulate enough character painting and modeling skills. Originally, she thought that she would swim in the world of Western painting, but she returned to her hometown of Ink Danqing to build the path of ethnic minority paintings in the land where she was born.
Today's Chinese painters like to paint works on ethnic minority themes, such as herdsmen riding horses on the vast grasslands; Tibetans dressed in bright clothes with wide robes and large sleeves; Xinjiang girls with graceful postures; Miao girls dressed in silver ornaments; and simple And simple Zhuang girls. Xu Lixia has her own understanding and pursuit in this colorful contemporary figure painting.
Xu Lixia was born in Nanning City, Guangxi Province, whether returning to her hometown to visit relatives or sketching, she will go to Guangxi ethnic minority areas with a group of young classmates in Nanning to experience life, collect and collect materials, whether it is black clothes, white pants Yao or Longlin Miao, where the beautiful landscapes, unique residences, humanistic folklore and simple and exquisite costumes are deeply imprinted in the journey of her artistic life.
Appealing to the scene where her emotions are maintained is undoubtedly the best expression of expressing the feelings of life. The accumulation of pictures and sketches in her heart blends with the painter's artistic pursuit. This may be one of the reasons why she chose ethnic minority themes to introduce her creation.
As a figure painter of Chinese painting, she thinks more about the characteristics of foreign painting with brush and ink, schema and color in her creation. The black-clad costume is a living black-and-white picture. At present Chinese few of the painters of this national costume have an artistic representation of this national costume. In her repeated small drafts, she strives to turn the costumes in black into elements of pen and ink features. Such ideas and skills have gradually perfected the personality of the picture.
In recent years, Xu Lixia has focused on the construction of a personalized pen and ink language for the creation of Chinese painting characters. The subject matter is getting wider and wider, and the connotation is gradually distant. The creation of special topics and ethnic themes, military themes, historical themes, ancient celebrity themes, ancient female themes, etc.
She knows that as a Chinese painter, she needs to absorb a lot of cultural nutrition. The rich pen and ink skill ability of Chinese painting is an evolution based on a high degree of artistic expression, and it is also a fundamental means of painting nationality.
In the past two years, she has gone to Tibetan areas to collect styles and create a number of works on the theme of Tibetan figure paintings to express the original appearance of Tibetan women at present. Unlike some tibetan figure paintings, she strives to relax the beautiful side of Tibetan women. The facial structure is handled by the dyeing and dyeing technique, and the background is mostly not too complicated to deal with, but only lightly outlines the environment in which the characters are located.
The clothing treatment adopts a linear rhythmic tone to strengthen the clothing characteristics of the Tibetan robe, which can better reflect the posture and mood of the characters. This batch of works is her attempt and exploration in Chinese painting characters, and it is also a sharp change in the pen and ink interest in life situations, which will increase the broad space for her future character painting creation.
Xu Lixia's Chinese painting figures practice the evolution of tradition and modernity, aesthetics and skills. Wander in the tradition of Chinese character creation, observe in real life, and think in the current artistic atmosphere.
