On January 12, five young science journalists from China, India and Greece received the 2018 Eurekalert! International Science Journalist Fellowship, including Chen Xiaoxue, editor of Intellectuals, which was the first time the award was awarded to practitioners of mobile Internet media organizations.

eurekalert! It is a science news service platform for global science journalists under the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2004, with seed funding from the William T. Gordon Project Innovation Endowment Fund, eurekalert! The International Science Journalist Fellowship Program was established. Each year, the fellowship program sponsors journalists from developing countries or regions in the early stages of their careers to travel to the United States to attend the annual meetings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, to report on cutting-edge scientific advances, and to connect with peers from around the world.

According to Eurekalert! The official website report quoted Beijing-based freelance writer Jane Qiu, one of the scholarship's judges, as saying, "A large proportion of the applicants come from digital and social media, reflecting China's changing media landscape," and "I am impressed by their dynamism, creativity, and keen awareness of the challenges facing journalists around the world." Jane Qiu is a contributor to Nature, Science, and Scientific American.

According to reports, Chen Xiaoxue won the award for his article published on the WeChat public account and the scientific new media "Intellectual". She writes for this new mobile media that updates science daily, including neuroscience and paleoanthropology. Recently, her series of reports on the gene-editing tool NGAGO, which she collaborated with colleagues, won the 2017 Tencent News Annual Investigative Reporting Award.

"I want to know about cutting-edge technology in the United States and how American scientists view the transformation of basic science into application," Chen Xiaoxue said in an interview with Eurokalert!, "How do U.S. laws and regulations protect the interests of investors and research institutions at the same time?" Chen Xiaoxue was also invited to participate in the 2017 World Science Journalists Conference held in San Francisco and attended the discussion as an observer.

The other four winners are Caijing magazine reporter Liu Haonan, Greece freelance writer Julianna photopoulos, Indian freelance writer Vijay shankar balakrishnan and Times of India journalist Aayushi pratap. The five winners will attend the 2018 American Association for the Advancement of Science Annual Meeting in Austin, USA, Feb. 15-19.

Previously, a number of young science journalists in China have won the scholarship, most of whom are active in the front line of science news reporting.
