Kars volunteered to join the Waffen-SS during World War II and was assigned to the Imperial Division, an SS unit. During the Soviet invasion (Operation Barbarossa) in July and September 1941, he was awarded the Iron Cross of two classes. In the 3rd Battle of Kharkov, Karls was fighting in the 8th Company of the 2nd Panzer Regiment, and he was the most successful of the entire Wehrmacht in September 1943 in the fight against Soviet tanks with Tiger tanks.

On 23 September, Karls was awarded the German Cross of the Gold for his command of the armored platoon in late summer. On 18 September, he assumed the role of company commander, commanding the Tiger Panzer Company, but was wounded shortly afterwards. Subsequently, the Tiger Panzer Company of the Imperial Division was disbanded and its remnants were transferred to 3 companies of the newly formed 102nd Heavy Panzer Battalion of the SS, most of whom went to the 1st Company.
In 1944, Karls began commanding the 1st Company and was sent to the Normandy battlefield along with the SS 102nd Heavy Panzer Battalion to resist the Allied D-Day landings. The battalion took part in the battle for 112 heights, in which it was almost completely destroyed. In July, Karls was able to destroy 42 enemy tanks, and in August he was awarded the Knight's Cross for his heroic performance in the Battle of Normandy.
In September 1944, the battalion was withdrawn to Sennelager, Germany, for recuperation and renamed the 502nd SS Heavy Panzer Battalion.
