The U.S. State Department said in a statement wednesday (Oct. 27) that the country has issued the first U.S. passport with an "x" gender tag designed to provide non-binary gender persons like zzyym (pronounced zimm) with a gender mark other than male or female on their travel documents.

Dana zzyym, the passport holder, said it was a legal recognition of it and the groups it represented, "I can be myself, in any sense." It was an exciting time for me. Zzyym described that not having a valid U.S. passport because of their gender designation is like living in a kind of "prison" because they are denied the right and freedom to travel and move around at will outside the U.S. border. zzyym obtained the first ever U.S. passport with such a gender logo, which advocates say is a milestone for non-binary Americans.
