Biography

Sima Yu (司馬昱) (320 – 12 September 372) was a native of Wen County, Hanoi, and the younger brother of Sima Shao. He was born in the third year of Emperor Daxing of Jinyuan and died in the second year of Xian'an, at the age of fifty-three. Sima Yu, emperor of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, was initially enfeoffed as the Evil King of Lang and later as the Prince of Hui. After Huan Wen deposed Sima Yi in November 371, he made him emperor on the same month (January 6, 372) and changed his era name to "Xian'an".

After Sima Yu succeeded to the throne, everything was obeyed by Huan Wen and resembled a puppet. In July 372, Sima Yu was critically ill, declared his son Changming the crown prince, and within a day and a night, issued four edicts in a row, inviting Huan Wen of Sima Zhen (present-day Dangtu County, Anhui Province) to assist the government in Beijing. Huan Wen ignored it, and Sima Yu had no choice but to write a will authorizing Huan Wen to be the regent of the zhou gong's assistance to the king; if the crown prince was not worthy of assistance, he could take his place and claim the title of emperor himself. King Tanzhi of Langzhong received the edict, strongly advised it, and tore it to pieces in front of Sima Yu. Sima Yu masturbated and said, "The world is originally a thing to be taken, so why should Qing be in such a hurry?" Wang Tanzhi retorted: "The world is the world of Emperor Xuan and Emperor Yuan, how can Your Majesty grant it to others privately!" Sima Yu mused for a long time, and had no words to answer, and ordered Wang Tanzhi to redraft the edict and change it to read: "All major matters of the family and the country must be told to Sima Huan (Huan Wen), and the crown prince should respect Huan Wen like Liu Chan treated Zhuge Liang." The next day (the last day of his death) (September 12), Sima Yu died in the Jiankang Palace. After Sima Yu's death, the temple name was Taizong and the courtesy name was Emperor Jianwen.
