From the late 1970s to the 1980s, in the southern Xinjiang region of the motherland, the smoke of gunfire was thick and the artillery was rumbling, and the heroic soldiers of the People's Liberation Army fought with the Vietnamese invaders for ten years in order to defend the tranquility of hundreds of millions of people and the national sovereignty and territorial security of the motherland. In this decade, many outstanding soldiers have emerged, and Sun Zhaoqun is a typical representative of them.

In January 1985, Sun Zhaoqun's 7th Company of the 596th Regiment of the 199th Division of the 67th Army of the Jinan Military Region, where Sun Zhaoqun was located, went to the Front Line of Laoshan Mountain, and Sun Zhaoqun was then serving as a platoon leader of the Seventh Company. The Seventh Company of Shuangdagong is a unit with a long history and has made outstanding military achievements, in the Battle of Shijiazhuang in 1947 and the Battle of Xiajiazhuang in 1948, the company was awarded the honorary title of Collective First Class for two consecutive times for its combat bravery, and in 1951 it went to fight in Korea, and the Seventh Company was assigned to the Third Battalion, participated in the Daofeng Mountain Blockade Battle, and the Headquarters of the Volunteer Army awarded the honorary title of Daofeng Mountain Battalion. At the founding ceremony of New China in 1949, the first phalanx of the army walked past the rostrum, including the figure of "Seven Companies of Double Great Merit".

In January 1985, after the company went to the front line of Lao Shan, it conducted more than a month of adaptation training in the rear, and then stationed itself in the whetstone position at the foot of Lao Shan. However, the day after the Seventh Company reached the front, the Vietnamese launched a sneak attack on the whetstone positions where the Seventh Company was stationed. The sudden battle made the soldiers who participated in the actual battle for the first time suddenly become helpless, but under the command of the company platoon leader, the soldiers quickly reacted and launched a counterattack against the enemy who was sneaking in, defeating the enemy's attack.

During the months-long decisive battle, Sun Zhaoqun was promoted to deputy company commander of the Seventh Company because of his many meritorious deeds. In September 1985, the superiors pulled the Seventh Company out of the forward position and decided to form a commando team, with Sun Zhaoqun, deputy company commander of the Seventh Company, who was experienced in actual combat, as the commando commander, and launched an attack on the Vietnamese 968 Heights on December 2, 1985, code-named "Operation 12.2".

968 Highland, located in the front line of Laoshan in Malipo County, Yunnan Province, is located 1.5 kilometers southeast of the main peak of Laoshan Mountain, and is an important support point for the Vietnamese front in the direction of Laoshan. After occupying the 968 heights, the Vietnamese army laid a large number of mines on the front of the highlands, and built a large number of fortifications, bunkers, traps on the positions, near the 968 highlands, there were several auxiliary highlands such as the 603 highlands, 604, etc., which could support the 968 highlands.

Commandos were mainly selected from the Seven Companies, and in the face of extremely dangerous point-pulling operations, the commanders and fighters of the Seventh Company did not flinch and signed up to join the Commando. Gu Kelu, the youngest soldier in the company, also signed up for the commando team at that time, but was rejected by the commando commander Sun Zhaoqun, who saw that the soldier was too young and it was too cruel for him to go up, so he resolutely did not want him. However, Gu Kelu was also very stubborn, and finally he said to Sun Zhaoqun: "Deputy Company Commander, I know that you care about me, but in the face of the selection of the motherland, for the honor of the company, you will take it as an opportunity to send me to death." ”

The little warrior Gu Kelu's Oath made it difficult for the commando commander Sun Zhaoqun to sleep for several consecutive nights, and he did not expect that in this era, someone would find him and ask for a chance to die. Finally, a few days before the operation, Sun Zhaoqun finally agreed to Gu Kelu's request and let him join the commando team.

Before the expedition, Gu Kelu wrote such a paragraph: Youth is beautiful, life is precious, I am a 17-year-old youth, yearning for the future, love life, because I am still very young, my long road of life, there are many beautiful visions, but the motherland and the people if they need me to sacrifice their lives, I will not hesitate to sprinkle blood into it.

Just before the 12.2 battle began, 52 commandos conducted a final combat exercise, and in response to the Vietnamese army's habit of mountain warfare and the characteristics of the jungle, the commandos were trained in flamethrowers. While the commandos were training intensively, the military industry team also braved artillery fire, stepped on muddy mountain roads, and crossed one enemy blockade line after another, delivering the ammunition and supplies needed for the 12.2 battle to the commandos. Two days before the battle began, in order to avoid being spotted by enemy observation, the commandos entered the attack position in batches.

At 9:00 a.m. on December 2, four PLA artillery groups began shelling vietnamese positions. At 9:40, the first wave of commandos began to attack the Vietnamese 603 Heights. With the support of artillery fire, the first wave of commandos quickly broke through the first vietnamese blockade line, and a few minutes later, the first wave of commandos quickly cleared the Vietnamese troops on Hill 603 and began to attack the Vietnamese troops on Hill 604. Sun Zhaoqun led the second wave of commandos to split into left and right, and also launched an attack on the enemy's position.

After the second wave of commando attacks, it was found that the enemy had set up many more bunkers than reconnaissance sites in advance, and was suppressed by the enemy to death, and the war correspondent Xu Xifang was also stunned. The Shells of the Vietnamese Army also injured the commando commander Sun Zhaoqun, but Sun Zhaoqun refused to go to the rear for treatment and continued to command the battle, and decades later, when the commando soldier Li Fuqi mentioned Sun Zhaoqun, he couldn't help but exclaim: "He is really a man, Sun Deputy Company Commander is really brave, I have admired him all my life." Under the influence of Sun Zhaoqun, commando officers and men quickly cleared the Vietnamese troops on Height 604.

After clearing the Vietnamese troops on the Vietnamese 604 heights, the commandos launched an attack on the 968 heights, and when the third wave of commandos charged towards the main peak, they were suppressed by the fire point of the Vietnamese bunker, and the commando Gu Kelu, who served as the demolition man, jumped out of the bunker and rushed to the enemy bunker under the cover of the machine guns of his comrades. When Gu Kelu was charging, he was hit by a shell from the Vietnamese army, and the whole person was blown up, and after his left leg was broken, he flew higher than the whole person, and then fell heavily to the ground. However, Gu Kelu still dragged a stump leg, strafed at the enemy position, and finally was hit by the enemy bullet and died heroically.

The entire battle lasted 25 minutes, and the commandos began to retreat backwards after completing their mission. Sun Zhaoqun, who was 17 wounded, let the large troops withdraw first, he led two team members to take cover, when there were still 30 meters from the position, the ambulance team rushed out, the commando Zhou Guoqing, Liu Fumin ordered the ambulance team to carry down the seriously injured Sun Zhaoqun first, but the ambulance team just walked out of ten meters, walking behind Zhou Guoqing, Liu Fumin was hit by shells, heroic sacrifice.

12.2 In battle, our commandos killed 87 Vietnamese troops, and 53 members of the 7 Company commandos lost 11 people and wounded more than 30 people. In addition to the previous battles, the Seventh Company had sacrificed 16 commanders and fighters. The huge casualties made all the commandos very sad, and the commando Ma Jun later recalled: "I returned to my barracks, my tent, and I and Jiang Ping were alone, nine people, and there were only two of us left." ”

After Sun Zhaoqun was discharged from the hospital after recovering from his injuries, the first thing Sun Zhaoqun did was to write a letter to the parents of each martyr, one letter after another signed "Zhaoqun'er". At the same time as the envelope, there was also a remittance slip of 100 yuan, and Sun Zhaoqun was taken out of all the savings accumulated over the years. In the decades that followed, Sun Zhaoqun sent 130,000 yuan and 1,500 letters to the parents and children of 16 martyrs. If something happened to the martyr's parents, or if they were sick, Sun Zhaoqun would travel thousands of miles to take care of them, while his own family was living in poverty.
